Government Administration
A flourishing environment for every generation. He taiao tōnui mō ngā reanga katoa.
About us
Tiakina te taiao ki tōnui a Aotearoa. He whenua mana kura mo tangata. The Ministry’s role is to be a long-term steward for the environment, and is underpinned by the aspiration of making New Zealand the most liveable place in the world. Being good stewards means making sure future generations have the same opportunities we did, such as; access to healthy land, air and water, being surrounded by unique and diverse native flora and fauna, having outstanding scenery and recreation opportunities, living in thriving communities, benefitting from a strong economy and enjoying a connection to the environment that goes to the heart of who we are as Kiwis. The Ministry cannot achieve this alone. We need collaboration and innovation from all New Zealanders; across our forests, farms and factories, in our cities and in our homes. But we can help set the direction and inspire people to play their part and make the best decisions for their environment and country. Although we take a long term view, we are acting today. That’s because we know the full implications of the choices we make take time to bear fruit.

We are proud to be a leading partner of The Aotearoa Circle and congratulate the team on this important recognition.
For an organisation only 5 years old, it’s pretty humbling to receive a letter from His Majesty, King Charles III acknowledging the work of The Aotearoa Circle. He is a true leader who for 50+ years has been stating how critical it is we act on the climate and biodiversity crises. Aotearoa New Zealand must set its second international climate change target for 2031–35, known as a Nationally Determined Contribution, by February 2025. Climate change impacts all New Zealanders, and the Government wants to understand what’s most important to New Zealanders before setting our next international climate change target. We also want feedback on how the Government could weight the different factors it must consider when settings its second Nationally Determined Contribution. Your feedback will help to inform final decisions by the Government. Learn more about the opportunity for feedback and share your views 🔗: https://lnkd.in/gZTiyQ7d

Help shape our Long-term Insights Briefing on building resilience to hazards How can New Zealand strengthen its resilience to future disasters and crises caused by major hazard risks such as earthquakes, pandemics and severe weather? That is the subject of a Long-term Insights Briefing the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) are developing on behalf of the National Hazards Board. Reviews and inquiries have highlighted the importance of building resilience to risks to make New Zealanders safer and to reduce the economic and social costs associated with disasters and crises. However, resilience-building requires everyone working together, as well as a common understanding of the challenges we face. MfE and DPMC are inviting public feedback on the types of issues the Long-term Insights Briefing should explore and will use this feedback to shape the briefing topic. Click here for more information and to provide feedback before the consultation period closes at 5pm on 26 November: https://lnkd.in/gpKC9TNh

Recycling rules changed in February, and lids were a hot topic! So, what’s the deal with lids and kerbside recycling? 🤔 🚫 Lids can’t be recycled from home. Separate them from bottles, containers, and jars before recycling. Here’s why: 🛑 Lids can be either too small (like bottle lids) or too flat (like ice cream or margarine container lids) to be separated by machinery at recycling plants. Sorting machinery can mistake flat lids for paper, so they contaminate paper recycling. 💧 Lids can trap contents, making containers too heavy for air jets to sort or contaminating the recycling with leftover food. ⚠️ Screwed-on lids can pop off under pressure and injure recycling centre workers. However, some lids — like tin can lids — can be recycled if you go the extra mile. Rinse, push the lid inside the tin, and squash it securely. 🆕 Caps and Lids Recycling Scheme has launched. Drop off caps and lids at collection boxes in selected New World, PAK’nSAVE, and Four Square supermarkets in Auckland, Tauranga, and Christchurch, with more locations coming soon. 🔗 Find out where to drop off lids for recycling near you: #RecycleRight #RecyclingWeek2024

♻️🌿 It’s Recycling Week 🌿♻️ Let’s look at some of the ways you can go the extra recycling mile for items that aren’t accepted in your kerbside collections. 🥫 Leave the lids attached to your tins, rinse clean, and push the lid inside the can. Then the lids can be recycled, too. 🚫 Just because an item is not accepted for recycling at kerbside does not mean it cannot be recycled at all. Check with your local council for information on any drop-off recycling services in your area.
