On 9 November, we celebrated 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall with a very special event: The opening of the exhibition “Berlin Wall Stories - Deutsch-Neuseeländische Mauergeschichten” 🇩🇪🇳🇿🎨✨ To mark this occasion, a range of German and Kiwi guests joined together to share memories and stories about this historic event. We even got the chance to ride in a Trabi - a famous East German car - courtesy of Southward Car Museum 🚙 Vielen herzlichen Dank to Alexandra Falk, the curator of the Berlin Wall Stories exhibition 👏 To all of the Zeitzeugen and Zeitzeuginnnen or “contemporary witnesses” who shared their stories, a very big thank you. We are grateful for your openness and powerful insights, which will spread knowledge about the important history of the Berlin Wall. Keep an eye out for the exhibition, which will very soon able to be viewed outside the embassy! 📸 #BerlinWallStories #KiwiGermanConnection

A peaceful revolution is possible. The fall of the Berlin Wall 35 years ago is an example of this. For decades, the GDR kept its citizens locked up in a system of oppression and violence. With their courage and their desire for a self-determined life in freedom, the people of the GDR brought down the Berlin Wall. Together with other courageous people in Central and Eastern Europe, they laid the foundations for German reunification and for a free, united Europe. Even today, freedom cannot be taken for granted. We must stand up for it. Then and now. Here and worldwide. #WeInvestInFreedom Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany

Tolerance, diversity, democracy 🖤❤️💛 35 years on from the fall of the Berlin Wall, this Day of German Unity celebration was an especially powerful moment to reflect on German unification. Our guest speaker Paula Wilson from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade spoke about Germany and Aotearoa New Zealand’s longstanding relationship. Tony Forster, freelance filmmaker, shared his experience of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Hearing Tony’s story, about how he as a Kiwi became an “accidental Berliner” when he crossed from East to West Berlin on November 9, 1989, resonated strongly with the audience. Herzlichen Dank to everyone who joined us - it was a wonderful evening with you all 👏 #DayOfGermanUnity2024 #GermanUnification #KiwiGermanConnection | Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany

On the Day of German Unity 🇩🇪👏🎉 we celebrate not only reunification, but also the values that make us strong: Tolerance, diversity, and democracy. These principles require our daily commitment, because we can only remain an open society if we stand up for each other. Crowds of people at the fall of the Wall, families reuniting or travelling to parts of Germany that were previously inaccessible: German reunification is linked to countless memories that still shape the lives of many people today. We want to celebrate all these changes, opportunities and experiences today on the Day of German Unity. We are also interested in your stories: Do you have a special memory or thought about the fall of the Wall or reunification? #DayOfGermanUnity2024 | Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany

⚓️ Today is #WorldMaritimeDay - a great occasion to highlight Germany's commitment to maritime cooperation and research. Have a look at these three ships ⛴️ ☀️ FS Sonne is a high-tech research ship which is mainly based in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Owned by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, the Sonne is an energy efficient and especially environmentally friendly vessel. Its research helps us to learn more about climate change, endangered ecosystems, and the supply of marine raw materials. What’s more - it is expected to visit our shores in New Zealand as part of an expedition in 2025. 🚢 Frigate #BadenWürttemberg and supply ship #FrankfurtamMain are German Navy ships currently on a voyage as part of the Indo-Pacific Deployment. From May to December, Germany’s naval forces will travel the Indo-Pacific region to emphasise Germany’s global commitment for an international rules-based order, free and secure shipping routes, and increased maritime security cooperation. 📸 Thomas Walter; Universität Oldenburg / Jutta Niggemann; Deutsche Marine
