“Supporting all people living through loss”

About us

Since 2009 The Grief Centre, has been providing support, resources, community talks, support groups and counselling to help those affected by loss and grief. Losses or changes can shift the whole foundation of our life. Nothing is as it was. Even what was most familiar, seems in a strange way unfamiliar. It is as though we have to learn a new language, a new way of being. Even the face in the mirror sometimes seems the face of a stranger. We are fortunate that we have a team of counsellors who are passionate in helping others and willing to give their time to support the development of the Grief Centre. All our counsellors are specialised in grief and loss, and belong to a professional organisation, adhering to a professional code of ethics. We support every person, regardless of financial circumstance, through their individual loss and grief journey by providing quality counselling and support groups, appropriate training and resources, and effective community engagement. Since 2016 the Centre has run training programs for professionals and community workers who are working with children, young people, adults, and families. These programs were based on paid research into training needs of health professionals and community workers who are supporting clients who’ve experienced some form of loss. In 2019 the Centre will also release a new online training program for work environments such as aged care where workers cannot easily be released for off-site training. All our programs are interactive and practical and will remain affordably priced so that NGO's and volunteer-based organisations can still access them. The Grief Centre’s talks and seminars on loss and grief are conducted by staff that are either clinicians or who have a vast amount of hands-on experience in supporting people through loss.

  • A heartfelt thank you to the Pelorus Trust for subsidising 20 grief counselling sessions for clients in the Wellington region. Your generosity ensures that more people, who might otherwise not afford it, will be able to access the support they need during difficult times. We know this has a huge impact as this previous client shares: "𝑀𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑟 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝𝑓𝑢𝑙. 𝐼 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑚𝑦 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒, ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑎 ℎ𝑢𝑔𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑓." Thank you for making a difference to New Zealanders living through loss and grief 💛

  • Thanks to NZ Herald / The Northland Age for their article on our recent research and highlighting the importance of professional support for those grieving: https://lnkd.in/gwRd9G4K “Grief is big for people and particularly at this time of the year, when the death of a loved one is highlighted through their absence in family traditions. Our research showed that 20% of people had accessed professional support for their grief but most of us rely on family and friends for support and the reality is that they might not be equipped to provide the best support.” "While our research told us over 50% of people thought support for grief counselling should be Government funded, the reality is it’s not. We need to find new ways to support people to continue to function through the intense grief we are all going to feel at some stage in our lives,” If you or your company would like to make a donation to help us provide more subsidised or free counselling sessions to help New Zealanders through their grieving journeys, you can do so here: griefcentre.org.nz/donate
