  • As the end of the year approaches, it is time for reflection, celebration, and preparation for the year ahead. This year has been filled with excitement, challenges, and highs and lows. We farewelled a staff member this week and a Board member earlier in the year, but we also welcomed an incredible new group of individuals to our Board. While we said goodbye to some colleagues in Government, we were thrilled to welcome 150 sponsored refugees into our communities. Although our funding successes were limited, we managed to secure an extension for our Community Refugee Sponsorship programme funding. Our efforts focused on capacity building for former refugee and migrant communities, while simultaneously developing our own capabilities with the invaluable support of a talented team of volunteers. We collaborated with sector partners, engaged in research, and actively participated in the global refugee community. Recently, we moved out of our offices after enjoying a wonderful 2.5 years as tenants at a local consultancy that generously provided us with office space. As we look for new premises (sublease) in Te Whanganui-a-tara Wellington for the upcoming year, we hope to find a location near The Terrace and/or close to the train station and bus terminal. If anyone has office space available to share, please get in touch with our Chief Executive: birgit.grafarend@hostint.org We wish you a happy, peaceful and safe holiday season filled with time to relax and unwind with whānau, communities and friends. Let us also keep in our hearts those who cannot be with us during this time. Kia pai ngā hararei – Happy holidays!

  • Refugee families supported through the Community Refugee Sponsorship programme in the Wellington region had the opportunity to attend yesterday's Go Media Christmas Lunch at Sky Stadium. The event was a fantastic gathering of approximately 300 individuals and families from various cultural backgrounds, showcasing delicious kai (food), gifts for children, a visit from Santa, as well as entertainment and dancing. ⚽️ The highlight for the kids? Playing soccer on the stadium field. 🎄 Even the HOST team embraced the festive spirit! 💝 A heartfelt thank you to Go Media for this opportunity. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely, experiencing Kiwi end-of-year kai (food) – some for the very first time! #diversityandinclusion #EthnicCommunities #NewZealandHolidays #giftofgiving Go Media NZ Ashley Edge Craig Strachan Catherine Jones Mike Gray

  • On Monday night at Parliament, Minister for Ethnic Communities, the Hon Melissa Lee, launched the Ethnic Evidence Report, the first of its kind in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Ethnic Evidence Report consolidates information about ethnic communities in New Zealand into a single resource. It has been created to increase the visibility and value of Aotearoa New Zealand's diversity. 🎤Minister Lee emphasised at the launch: “A first-of-its-kind report launched today lays the groundwork for growing the visibility of New Zealand’s ethnic communities through data.” “This report is an important step in the right direction as we strive to increase the visibility of our ethnic communities.” Within our communities, we have anecdotal evidence, stories, and lived experiences; however, ethnic communities still struggle to gain visibility in public sector decision-making. While certain aspects of intersectionality remain unaddressed, this report provides comprehensive data in one place for the first time, marking a significant step in the right direction. This presents an opportunity for ethnic communities and the wider settlement sector to amplify its voices by bringing together data with personal narratives. 📢 Explore the report to discover how the data can support your community's advocacy efforts and increase your visibility and representation! 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gKN67KCV #YourVoiceMatters #DiversityandInclusion #ethniccommunities #advocacy #CommunityMatters Ministry for Ethnic Communities

  • 🏅 Congratulations to our wonderful Chairperson Dr. Mai Tamimi, a Kiwibank Local Hero Medallist for 2024. We are so thrilled to hear this news 👏 🙏. From the 2024 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa: "Dr. Mai Tamimi MNZM is a distinguished community leader renowned for her exceptional contributions to both the ethnic and wider communities of Ōtepoti Dunedin and across New Zealand. As the Team Leader of Community Partnerships at Dunedin City Council, she has been instrumental in advancing cultural diversity and promoting the well-being of the community, with a particular focus on women and youth. Originally from Palestine, Dr. Tamimi arrived in New Zealand in 2008 to pursue a PhD in Human Geography at the University of Otago. Since then, she has been unwavering in her efforts to challenge stereotypes and build greater understanding between ethnic communities. Her commitment to community cohesion was especially evident in the aftermath of the Christchurch terror attacks, where she played a pivotal role in supporting the Muslim community. She also served on Kāpuia, the Ministerial Advisory Group on the Government's response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch Mosque attacks. Dr. Tamimi has consistently been at the forefront of supporting New Zealand communities during times of crisis, including in the wake of the Christchurch attacks and during severe weather events. She has been an active participant in interfaith dialogue and, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, offered vital support to families while advocating for refugee integration through language services and social support initiatives. As Board Chair of HOST International Aotearoa New Zealand, Dr. Tamimi has worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of migrants and refugees within New Zealand's resettlement services. Throughout her career, she has been a staunch advocate for inclusivity, cultural understanding, and the creation of a more welcoming and cohesive Aotearoa New Zealand." Mai Tamimi- PhD- MNZM, that is such a well-deserved honour. You are an inspiration to us all. A big shout-out also to Daniel Gamboa, JP from the New Zealand National Refugee Youth Council, who also received a Local Hero Award Medal. Congratulations to you both! • It has been an immense privilege to facilitate the Former Refugee Stakeholders Network for the Wellington region over the past year. The essence of this network lies in whanaungatanga, fostering relationships, and collaborating on various barriers and challenges impacting the lives and wellbeing of former refugee communities and individuals. As a collective, we amplify our voices to address issues that extend beyond the Wellington region, while also providing awhi (support) and manaakitanga to one another. This year, our primary focus was on housing for former refugees. We were thrilled to welcome several housing providers to the network, who shared their mahi (work) and helped us forge connections to enhance the settlement experience for former refugees. Kia ora and thank you to everyone who contributed to the growth and success of the network. Here is to continued collaboration in 2025 😊. #refugeesupport #strongertogether #strongercommunities #advocacy #communitybuilding #inclusion ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum
