Hurunui District Council pool staff have jumped in with both feet to deliver a practical boating and water-safety programme to families in the district. 'Getting out on the water and throwing on a life jacket is not enough. You have to know what to do if you get flipped out, how to keep yourself safe if you can’t get back into the boat.' We act boldly and innovatively, to enable communities to achieve their social, economic, cultural and environmental goal
About us
Hurunui is one of New Zealand's most stunning and spectacular regions. Located on the east coast of the South Island an easy 40 minute drive north of Christchurch, our main office in Amberley is nestled at the entrance to the stunning Waipara wine region. Hurunui offers it all – rest and relaxation (including our internationally acclaimed Hanmer Springs Thermal Hot Pools & Spa), action and adventure, rural lifestyle and urban convenience. The Hurunui district begins at Leithfield just 35 minutes north of Christchurch, and extends to the Conway River south of the Kaikoura Peninsula. It is bordered on the west by the snow capped peaks of the Southern Alps and on the east by the rich oceanic waters of the Pacific. The Hurunui district is predominantly rural with a population of approximately 13,700 (2022). However, it offers something for everyone, lifestyle opportunities in rural communities or bigger townships, hiking in the hills, hunting or fishing, soaking in the hot pools in Hanmer Springs, skiing in the winter or enjoying a nice dinner and wine tasting in one of the many vineyards, we have it all At the council we look after the district’s roads and water, provide amenities like parks, libraries and pools and regulate activities in the district like planning, building and licensing. All these things contribute to the wellbeing of the people who live here so, whatever we do, we like to think we are helping make the Hurunui a better place for our residents.

#wastewaterupdate The old inlet pipe at the Amberley Wastewater Treatment plant is lifted for removal to make way for the new open-top chute and pipe, which will be much larger - and easier to clean. The concrete foundation in the foreground of the photo is where a new shed is being built to accommodate the new inlet screen, which will be connected to the chute. The new inlet screen is much larger than the old one and means fewer blockages, fewer on-site visits by Utilities officers and will accommodate Amberley's growth.

#FlashbackFriday 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 & 𝗡𝗼𝘄: 50 years between these 2 photos. Council's digitisation administrator found this proposed plan for Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, dated 1974, while packaging up paper plans of the pools for scanning. Below is a photo of the pools taken earlier this year, courtesy of Visit Hurunui.

Council's Building team were supporting our local builders and designers in a different way last week - giving them a good breakfast with an opportunity to network and hear some presentations on all they need to know, from consents and inspections to building data. There were also lots of opportunities to ask questions.

"We are forever grateful that there are groups and individuals out there that give so generously to make this happen. Thank you, Rātā, you have no idea just how much this means to us and our children." Those are the words from one Hurunui mum whose three children have all gone through Hurunui Youth's holiday programmes - delivered thanks to 12 years of funding from the Rātā Foundation. Amberley's Skylah took part in her first holiday programme activity last year and challenged herself these past holidays at Willowbank's Bee Encounter. This is what she has to say about her experience: https://lnkd.in/g9N3M9MM
