We want to shed some light on this young man, Hamish Tanner and congratulate him on receiving a Scholarship to Otago University! Hamish has been involved with Kura Kai since Katikati College first joined when he was a Year 10. He has poured so much into our charity over the years – he is an incredible young man. Next year Kura Kai is launching our first ever Rangatahi Ambassador and we are so excited! Hamish has been instrumental in not only helping us form this role but more importantly inspiring us to do it. Marie sat down with him recently and he’s quietly guttered he’s off to Otago as he wanted to be the first Kura Kai Rangatahi Ambassador! Well Hamish….watch this space…something is brewing. We asked his Food Tech teacher for some words, and this was her reply “you do it! I keep choking up, going to miss this young man, I’m trying to be brave. I’m going to miss my side kick”. This just shows what type of rangatahi Hamish is… Good luck with your Bachelor of Science (Major in Food Science) Hamish. We know you will absolutely smash it!

We live by the value of manaakitanga with a simple kaupapa of “whānau cooking for whānau”.
About us
Kura Kai is a charitable trust, administered to support rangatahi and whānau across Aotearoa. At Kura Kai we live by the value of manaakitanga with a simple kaupapa of “whānau cooking for whānau”. We do this by raising funds to purchase chest freezers and resources, which we donate to the high schools we support. We then build a local community of volunteers who give their time, money and resources to cook nutritious family meals to help keep the freezers well stocked. Each school is then responsible for distributing the meals to support rangatahi and whānau who need a bit of extra aroha and support. High school students can also be involved in cooking meals right through to coordinating Kura Kai within their school. Integrating the program into the wider life and culture of schools has many benefits and teaches rangatahi important life skills such as cooking healthy meals, project planning, experiencing the benefits of helping others and even gaining unit standards for this work.

A little token goes a long way so thank you to everyone that dropped a Good in the Hood token into the Kura Kai box at Z Manurewa in Auckland and Z Hewletts Rd in Mount Maunganui. A little over $2000 was raised 👏! Marie headed along to receive our koha and have a kōrero with the Z team and other local charities who were part of this campaign. Great morning connecting and hearing about all the great people in our hapori (community) doing good things. Thanks Z Energy NZ Good in the Hood!

What an awesome day in the kīhini (kitchen) today with the NZ Sevens boys making meals to go into the BOP Youth Development Trust - Tauranga Boxing Academy Kura Kai Freezer. The team definitely know their way around the kitchen so within no time they managed to pump out over 40 meals of VJ Cooks Ltd Hash Brown Bolognese Bake. Thanks so much guys and to David Ormrod (Team Manager). We could feel your manaakitanga. We had another top bloke join us, Jasper from Hunt for Good who donated all the meat today. What an awesome kaupapa Hunt for Good is – they provide sustainable, wild game meat to charities like us to address food insecurity. Finally, thank you to Rachel Wikeepa for all your organisation behind the scenes and to Greta for your mahi in the kitchen. It is always great to see so many different groups coming together and connecting over kai!

It is events like this that put a spotlight on rangatahi and their communities as they work together to raise awareness and funds for Kura Kai rangatahi led initiatives. We were absolutely blown away by the amazing talent of the Tauhara College Senior Hospitality students who prepared and served the most amazing kai at their recent restaurant evening! Under the guidance of Food Tech Teacher / Kura Kai Coordinator Kirsty Trevor and Hospitality Teacher “Chef Ben” Ben Bisley, students put together a five-course meal featuring produce from Misfit Garden as well as other locally sourced ingredients, followed by a Q&A session with Vanya Insull VJ Cooks Ltd The team even had support from some of the Duke of Edinburgh students from the college who provided much needed hands in the kitchen as part of gaining volunteer hours towards their awards! A huge thank you to That Green Olive - Food photographer & recipe developer for capturing these beautiful shots of the evening and to all the amazing local businesses for providing such great prizes for the raffle and silent auction.
