We have an opportunity to make a change in our community. In response to the high suicide statistics in New Zealand MATES MATTERS NZ has been set up to provide mental wellness and suicide prevention programmes in the Waikato region to increase more help options and enable more people to have life-supporting conversations. The heart of Mates Matters NZ is to provide a suicide prevention approach that is specific to the needs of workplaces and communities within the Waikato region. While the program is focused on preventing suicide, it can also help workplaces, communities, sports teams, etc to reduce harm and increase health and safety. Thanks Anthony Gordon for the awesome clip. #wellbeing #charity #suicideawarness #weareinthistogether #community

Promoting life-supporting communities in Waikato through various mental health and suicide prevention programs.
About us
The MATES matter NZ Charitable Trust was established in 2020 in response to the high suicide rates in New Zealand. The trust has been set up to provide resources and profile-raising activities around mental wellness support for everyone in the Waikato and to increase more help options and enable more people to have life-supporting conversations. We started as a dream of our founder Craig Bulloch, who himself has lived with mental illness and was close to becoming one of the many that we lose too young. He was saved and vowed to make a change. He believed that there was a lot of talk around Mental Health and wellbeing but not a lot of action was taking place. A Facebook group was started and as the community grew it was clear that providing programs and resources to the Waikato community was where the need was. The trust has grown and can now provide programs to the community. We will become a hub for wellbeing where people can come, get the resources and help they need, but also a place to learn about how to help those that may be in crisis. The heart of Mates Matter NZ is to provide a suicide prevention approach that is specific to the needs of workplaces and communities within the Waikato region. MATES matter NZ purpose - Providing resources and profile raising activities around mental wellness and support for everyone in the community MATES matter NZ Vision – Life-affirming communities connecting people. MATES matter NZ Values – Integrity, Aroha, Manaakitanga

We’re excited to share that Scott and Bridget Pearce will be running the London Marathon in April to support MATES Matter NZ! Running 42.2km is no small feat, and we’re so grateful they’ve chosen to take on this incredible challenge to raise funds and awareness for mental wellbeing. Their journey highlights the powerful link between physical activity and mental health – building resilience, fostering connection, and proving what we’re capable of when we set our minds to it. If you’d like to support Scott and Bridget’s efforts and the work we do at MATES Matter NZ, you can donate via their Givealittle page: https://lnkd.in/gCs-iuVQ Let’s come together to back their incredible commitment to mental health and wellbeing. #LondonMarathon #MentalHealthMatters #MATESMatterNZ #Wellbeing

Happy New Year!! On 27th April we will be taking on the iconic London Marathon This time we will be running for MATES matter NZ MATES Matter NZ isn’t about grand gestures or fixing everything overnight. It’s about the power of showing up for the people around us. It’s about asking, “How are you, really?” and being there to listen. It’s about creating moments of connection that remind us we’re not alone, even in our toughest times. Looking back, that pair of running shoes was more than just a purchase—they were a promise to myself that things could get better. And now, through MATES Matter NZ, that promise extends to others. We’re here to remind each other that even in the darkest moments, there’s light to be found in connection. You never know whose life you might touch with a simple conversation or act of kindness. Together, we can build stronger, more supportive community—one mate at a time. We’ll be sharing our training updates and fun fundraising activities over the next few months, so stay tuned! Your support means the world to us, and any donations are truly appreciated. If you'd prefer, you’re more than welcome to join us for a run—or even better, do both!

In the past year, 617 New Zealanders lost their lives to suicide. Behind each number is a person with a unique story, dreams, and people who loved them deeply. These aren’t just statistics—they’re irreplaceable lives that left behind families, friends, and communities forever altered by their loss. The impact on Māori communities is especially profound, with significantly higher rates, particularly for those aged 25-44. These numbers are a call to look closer, listen deeper, and offer more understanding and support. It’s about making sure that anyone struggling feels seen and that the resources to help them are there when they need it most. To everyone who has felt this kind of loss—our hearts are with you. Let’s honor those we’ve lost by coming together to foster a culture where it’s okay to reach out, okay to talk, and okay to lean on each other. If you or someone you know needs support, reach out to a trusted person, call Lifeline, or text 1737. You’re not alone. Let’s stand together, hold each other close, and keep working for a future where every life is valued and supported.

Mental Health Awareness Week is just around the corner, and this year's theme is all about community—checking in on those around us and starting conversations that matter. At MATES matter NZ, we’re excited to introduce our new smart ALEC posters and wallet cards, designed to help you have those important conversations. ALEC—Ask, Listen, Encourage, Check-in—has been developed by R U OK? and adopted by Movember as a powerful tool for mental wellbeing. A big thank you to Interactionz for their amazing work on the artwork for these posters and wallet cards. We couldn’t be happier with how they turned out! These are now available, and we’re offering them to organisations, sports clubs and anywhere that they will be seen and start conversations in Waikato that want to support their teams in creating a culture of care and connection. If you’re keen to have these in your workplace or community and to learn more about ALEC get in touch. It's exciting to see our MATES matter NZ posters and wallet cards making their way into local organisations across the Waikato to kick off Mental Health Awareness Week! 🙌 A huge thank you to everyone who has reached out to support our mission of building stronger communities through conversations around mental health. Special mention to Snap Fitness Asia Pacific Cambridge, where this picture was taken. This week is the perfect time to connect and check in on those around you. Remember to use the ALEC method—Ask, Listen, Encourage, and Check-in—to start those important conversations and make a difference. Supporting teams to make positive social impact for our communities through employment and better understanding of mental health
It’s been great handing these out to businesses, gyms, social and sports clubs across the #mightywaikato. The best part is the conversations it creates about #mentalhealth and #wellbeing with people and how keen people are for this kind of information. MATES matter NZ is passionate about supporting our community to thrive by having skills and knowledge when it counts. At times it’s good to be a smart Alec 😊
