Northland Corporate Group
Non-profit Organizations
Fostering economic prosperity in Te Tai Tokerau.
About us
The Northland Corporate Group is a consortium of large businesses in Te Tai Tokerau with a shared vision of fostering economic prosperity in the region. Our combined annual turnover exceeds $1b, we employ more than 3,500 people and deliver essential services across the entire region. Despite being the historic birthplace of Aotearoa New Zealand, Tai Tokerau Northland lags economically compared to the rest of the country, negatively affecting social, health, and educational outcomes. While the region boasts natural resource advantages and a rich cultural heritage, it faces challenges due to its geography and limited connectivity with the rest of the country. The lack of resilience in our roading infrastructure and transport corridor to Auckland isolates us, impacting freight, tourism, regional growth, and road safety. To unlock Tai Tokerau Northland's potential, urgent investment is needed to upgrade our roading infrastructure, enabling efficient and resilient tourism, commuter and freight routes to the rest of the country, as well as a wider economic contribution for established sectors of our regional economy. The Northland Corporate Group is funding the development of a comprehensive business case to show how substantive investment in resilient and efficient roading infrastructure for our region will: • support local and central government economic, social and environmental objectives, • help greater Auckland to mitigate infrastructure and housing challenges, • identify the latent capital investment ready to deploy in Northland.

It was great to hear directly from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Chair Simon Bridges at an Institute of Directors in New Zealand event in Auckland last week. Simon discussed the approach NZTA are taking to the #NorthlandCorridor Programme (#NorthlandExpressway) and the accelerated delivery strategy and various funding options. He also highlighted the considerable public interest and support for the programme - you can register to regular email updates here. cc Northpower, Marsden Maritime Holdings Ltd, Channel Infrastructure NZ, Top Energy, Culham Engineering Company Ltd, McKay, Becky Hare https://lnkd.in/gVuBSubQ

Great to see one of our members being recognised for their excellent mahi! Ka rawe! Congratulations Northpower cc Andrew McLeod, Josie Boyd
When we identified that one of our Whangārei transmission towers needed to be replaced, our project team collaborated with the local hapū - Te Parawhau - to shape the design of the tower and the construction process. Consultants from Edison Consulting Group and Lumen also provided essential support throughout the project. This project recently won the Engineering Excellence Award at the Electricity Engineers' Association of New Zealand awards. Great to see work has started on the #NorthlandExpressay!
We're excited to be starting work on the new Northland Corridor – a 100-kilometre stretch of four-lane expressway from Warkworth to Whangārei, connecting Auckland and Northland. We've already got drillers in the ground in Warkworth doing initial site investigations. The Northland Corridor is part of the Government's Roads of National Significance programme. The new road will address the major resilience and safety issues with the current State Highway 1, and it'll unlock economic growth and productivity by moving people and freight efficiently, quickly, and safely across the region, supporting housing development, and providing more resilience during extreme weather events. As you can see in the map below, we'll be building the road in three sections: Warkworth and Te Hana, Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway, and Port Marsden Highway to Whangārei. We're planning to start building the first section from Warkworth to Te Hana by the end of 2026. It's consented and we're underway purchasing property. The Government has agreed in principle to an accelerated delivery strategy and we’re considering a wide range of funding, financing, and delivery tools to deliver this project quickly and cost effectively. You can keep up to date with our work on the Northland Corridor by signing up to our email newsletter. Visit our website to sign up, and to find out more about the project: https://lnkd.in/gYMcb_h8

We were pleased to see further recognition for Top Energy's thermal renewable energy generation capabilities as part of the independent review into Transpower New Zealand's tranmission tower collapse in our region earlier in the year. The clean energy generated in Ngawha is a critical source of energy resilience for Te Tai Tokerau Northland. This extract from Simeon Brown's statement on the report is key to energy system resilience for Northland and Auckland. "The report also found that the restoration of power after the tower collapsed was carried out quickly, safely and efficiently, and highlights the importance of distributed generation." “Distributed generation was able to meet 45 per cent of the peak demand, meaning that many customers could get up and running shortly after the tower collapse. Without distributed electricity generation, the economic cost to Northland would have been far greater. The Electricity Authority estimates that having access to that distributed electricity generation saved Northland consumers at least $26 million." https://lnkd.in/gZxZNw3w #NorthlandEnergyBridge #RenewableEnergy cc Northpower, McKay, Marsden Maritime Holdings Ltd, Culham Engineering Company Ltd, Channel Infrastructure NZ, Andrew McLeod, Lindsay Faithfull, Rosie Mercer, Rob Kirwan, Russell Shaw, Rob Buchanan

Last week, we were invited to present to senior leaders from Iwi, business and local government at the Regional Economic Summit in Ngawha hosted by Kānoa - Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit, Minister Shane Jones and Minister Tama Potaka. Lindsay Faithfull shared our views on how Te Tai Tokerau can and should be making a greater contribution to the national economy. As Auckland’s neighbour – we are living and working right next door to NZ’s economic engine room – we need to make that work for us. This requires our business , iwi and local government leaders to aligned and clear on where to invest to get the most transformational shifts. Andrew McLeod & Russell Shaw introduced the idea of Te Tai Tokerau being a "Energy Bridge" for Auckland in supplying clean energy generated in our region to help ease NZ's energy crisis. We have an abundance of wind, solar and geothermal resouces that can deliver 600MW within 5 years - but investment in additional distribution and transmisison infrastructure is needed to get the energy to Auckland. We estimate a $200m investment in infrastructure will unlock $1b in private investment in renewable energy across the region, powering an additional 130k homes, reducing wholesale energy costs and creating resilience for Northland and Auckland. #tetaitokerau #energybridge #renewableenergy #infrastructure #localgovernment #iwi McKay, Channel Infrastructure NZ, Marsden Maritime Holdings Ltd, Culham Engineering Company Ltd, Northpower, Top Energy, Simeon Brown, Rosie Mercer, Rob Buchanan, Rob Kirwan, Vince Cocurullo, Moko Tepania, Mark Trigg, David Sullivan, Northland Inc, Paul Linton

A big 'Ka Rawe!" and shout out to the team at McKay for helping deliver this energy resilience project in Te Tai Tokerau for Meridian Energy.
We’re building a battery. A big one 🔋 New Zealand’s solar and wind generation produces heaps of electricity when the sun’s shining and wind’s blowing, but there’s been no way of storing that electricity. That’s all about to change. This 200MWh Battery Energy Storage Site at Ruakākā, near Whangārei, will allow us to store that electricity for those times when it’s really needed. It's being built by a fantastic team, and we're very excited to watch its progress! The team at NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi are consulting on raising the speed limit on the Pūhoi to Warkworth expressway from 100km to 110km. As you might imagine we’re fans of being able to safely increase productivity and given the high quality of the road and it’s inherent safety design, we think raising the limit is sensible proposal.
