Non-profit Organizations
We are the national body representing SLTs and advocate for people who have communication and swallowing impairments.
About us
The New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association is the national professional body of Speech-language Therapists in New Zealand. We are the association for our members. We are over 900 Speech-language Therapists. We are committed to giving all New Zealanders their life essentials – effective communication and safe swallowing. With these life essentials comes well-being. The NZSTA provides a clear statement of the scope of practice of a profession, including what is not within scope for a profession. The NZSTA provides quality assurance of the tertiary courses of New Zealand. The NZSTA provides quality assurance of overseas-trained speech-language therapists requesting membership. The NZSTA provides a framework ensuring a structured and supervised first year of practice for newly qualified speech-language therapists. The NZSTA provides continuing quality assurance of its registered professionals. The NZSTA provides a framework ensuring a structured and supervised first year of practice for speech-language therapists with fewer than 1000 hours of practice in the past 5 years. The NZSTA can restrict a professional’s activities to protect the public and in some cases, withdraw membership of an individual. We believe in the well-being of Aotearoa now and in the future.

As a part of July’s spotlight on SLTs in the education sector, we’re spotlighting two SLTs, from two different areas of education. Today, we shine the spotlight on Charity Lester, a speech-language therapist at a specialist school. Charity loves working with families and the students, but also with the wider team such as teachers and teacher aides, external agencies, and the community. As Charity has been in her role for 8 years, she has worked with some students from new entrant to senior students, which means she's had the chance to see amazing changes over this time.
