Earlier this year, Wellington Electricity (WE*) identified that one of the two gas-filled 33kV Central Park (CPK) to Evans Bay cable circuits, known as Evans Bay No. 1, was in need of repair. To maintain security of supply to consumers, WE* determined that the most cost-effective solution was to install a 33kV bus at Evans Bay. Additionally, it was decided to replace two 33/11kV 20MVA transformers at Evans Bay substation, which had been nearing the end of life, and perform repairs to the transformer building structure. WE* commissioned Omexom New Zealand (Electrix) to facilitate the installation of two new 33/11kV 24MVA transformers, a new transportable 33kV switchroom, and a 33kV switchboard at the Evans Bay substation, as well as remote end works to upgrade protection systems at Transpower New Zealand Central Park and Ira Street substations. Omexom faced a number of challenges during this project, including equipment and asset faults, adverse weather conditions (notably wind) and even theft — all of which affected the project. Despite these challenges, Omexom successfully completed the project and removed the two old transformers from the site. Earlier this year, a transformer at Transpower New Zealand's South Dunedin substation experienced a fault and needed replacement. Omexom New Zealand (Electrix) immediately went into action to remove the failed transformer and put in place a standby unit. In the course of 34 days, Omexom and our contractors managed to adapt, improvise and overcome challenges, such as a large difference in weight between the failed transformer and the replacement one, changes to the transformer foundation, HV connections, and secondary and protection systems. Analysis and assessments had to be conducted rapidly to ensure minimal disruption and tight coordination to reach our targets.   Watch our team and contractors swing into action to tackle this substantial job and secure the power supply for Dunedin, as New Zealand headed into the coldest days of the year. Diwali is one of India's most beloved festivals, with its roots in the Indian epic, and has been celebrated for centuries.  Diwali, the festival of lights, is where the Indian community comes together to mark this occasion with lights, lamps and celebrations. Last week, Omexom New Zealand (Electrix) was super excited to be announced winner in various categories of the Connexis Line and Cable Jointer Competition held in Te Awamutu. Our team, consisting of line mechanics and cable jointers worked hard to hone their skills and solidfy their teamwork prior to the competition. Omexom New Zealand (Electrix) is super pleased to share that Sage Baucke, electrician and team leader with Power Services Northern (Transmission and Substations Perimeter), is this year’s Transmission Trainee of the Year at the 2024 Connexis Energy Trainee Awards!  Sage was among three finalists for the award, and we know her award was well deserved! Sage joined us three years ago, working at substations around the upper North Island and qualified, as an electrician a year ago.  She has since worked her way up to team leader, helping New Zealand achieve the energy transition.  Well done, Sage!
