Next week, our Chief Executive, Steve Wiggins, will be joining a panel at the Australian Payments Network (AusPayNet) Annual Summit in Sydney. With Australia set to phase out its cheque system by 2029, Steve will share valuable insights from the industry-led phaseout of cheques in Aotearoa New Zealand, which was successfully completed in 2021. We were honoured to host Toby Evans, Luke Wilson and the AusPayNet team at #ThePoint2024, and we're excited to continue contributing to discussions around payments modernisation across the Tasman. You can register for the Summit here: https://lnkd.in/g5_5wpaB #PaymentsNZ #FuturePayments #Cheques #Payments #Innovation
With continued adoption of digital payment methods and Treasury’s consultation on Winding Down the Cheques System, how we make that happen as an industry will be a hot topic at our annual Summit. We look forward to gaining insights on how this has been managed overseas, what users of the cheques system are thinking about and why communication and coordination will be important if we are to achieve a smooth transition. To discuss this topic, we will be joined by Payments NZ Chief Executive Steve Wiggins, Lynne Cardwell, Executive Director, Banking and Financial Services, NSW Treasury, strategic marketing professional, Ian Jamieson and Dianne Shay, Head of Payments Industry, NAB who will moderate this practical discussion. We’re celebrating a second open banking implementation milestone today, opening the door for banks, fintechs and third parties to offer a wider range of open banking products and services. ANZ, ASB Bank, Bank of New Zealand and Westpac New Zealand have confirmed that they’re ready to partner using our API Centre’s Account Information v2.1 standard, ahead of a 30 November deadline under our minimum open banking implementation plan. The Account Information standard allows customers to securely share information related to their bank account with registered third parties – enabling useful services such as personal finance and budgeting apps and streamlined loan applications. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gTkAJBFi Our recent Open Banking Showcase at #ThePoint2024 included a preview of the potential of account information in open banking – check out our video recap below for the highlights. What an incredible start to conference week! Last Monday, we kicked off The Point by hosting The Link event, a special gathering that brought together over 70 amazing women in payments. It was a fantastic afternoon of networking, connecting, and reflecting on the year that’s passed. We took time to engage in whakawhanaungatanga—a meaningful process of relationship-building. The conversation centred around important questions like where we consider "home" and what, besides our day jobs, we are most passionate about. Thank you to all of those who joined us for the afternoon, we look forward to The Link events in 2025! Special thanks to Jane-Renee Retimana, Angela Gill, Vanessa Ronan-Pearce, Sarah Hensen, Amy Katterns, Katie Wilson, Merilee Andrews, Nina Seja, Sajel Parsotam, Sheri-Lee Paulse, Sonali Jina, Justine Boyle, Susan Shearer, Venesse Chong, Lisa Ibarra, Natalie Vaughan-Sanders, Anna Bell, Yen Jong, Jade Ford This event truly set the tone for an amazing The Point 2024! #TheLink #WomenInPayments #Networking #Empowerment #ThePoint2024 #Aotearoa #PaymentsNZ

We’ve come to the end of a remarkable journey at #ThePoint2024 in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, with an insightful and inspiring second day of our premier payments conference for Aotearoa. We led off with a fireside chat examining the impact of generative AI on financial services and everyday life, brought to us by our conference principal sponsor FIS. Minister Hon Andrew Bayly delivered an address outlining his vision of the future of payments systems in Aotearoa, including his goals for the Customer and Product Data Bill in facilitating secure and efficient data services. We expanded on Day One’s focus on the big picture, with Tim Groser addressing the conference on our economic and trade context, followed by a panel taking a closer look at macroeconomic headwinds, effective market strategies, and Māori economic development and indigenous trade policies. From there we took deep dive into the future of payments, digital innovation and partnerships, and into central bank digital currencies and cryptocurrency as part of the wider future of money. In the afternoon we looked at the potential of open banking in our second Open Banking Showcase of 2024, with international perspectives, demonstrations and dialogue on how open banking might unlock social as well as economic outcomes. The focus on fintech innovation continued with banking and fintech leader Nektarios Liolios sharing insights on strategic innovation between corporates and startups and how large organisations can be “startup ready”. Finally, our own Steve Wiggins brought the threads of the last two days together with his reflections on our time together and what it shows us about the path forward for the Aotearoa payments ecosystem as we continue to navigate beyond and seek new horizons. We look forward to continuing our conversations and building on the relationships grown at The Point 2024. The road to #ThePoint2026 starts here!
