Check out some snippets from our Aoraki Pre Hospital Emergency Care Course with Seb ❄️ The Aoraki PHEC crew spent time at the base of the mountain honing in their response skills. Learners were challenged by the very chilly environment and managing multiple patients together as a team. Get to know the First Response Unit! ⛑️ Funded by the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club, the First Response Unit is a professional rescue service that operates in the Whakarewarewa Forest. 🌲 The FRU service began in December 2016. In 2019, the FRU was extended from a weekend and holidays service to an on-call mid-week service as well. 🚵🏻♀️ Fast Facts 👇 ⛑️ The FRU operates 365 days. ⛑️ On average, the FRU attends at least one rescue a day. ⛑️ On our busiest day, we attended 9 rescues. ⛑️ Whakarewarewa Forest can have more than 3000 riders on a single day during a busy summer weekend. ⛑️ Since the service began in 2016, we have attended approximately 2000 + incidents. ⛑️ 79% of rescued patients are considered stable. ⛑️ 19% of rescued patients are considered stable, but could become unstable. ⛑️ 1.5% of rescued patients are considered unstable and could rapidly deteriorate. Your future medics! 🚵🏻♀️⛑️ During the school holidays we held a Mountain Bike First Aid Course for the @rotoruamountainbikeclub Youth. This course had a focus on safety and how to respond in an emergency out on the trails 🌲 Our young learners gained confidence by practising sending for help, making a trail safe when a crash has happened, identifying emergency conditions and responding appropriately. Over two half days they spent time getting creative and using the environment around them. They came up with many great ways to improvise “nature splints” and patient packaging techniques.
