  • 🚂 We're excited to announce that from 6 January, the logs-on-rail service to Port Taranaki will restart. 🌲 Initially, six wagons a day will travel from Whanganui to Taranaki, removing the need for about 80 truck trips each week. 👍 “We’re very pleased to have this service up and running again as it improves efficiency for exporters, helps alleviate congestion and the impact on the roads, and helps reduce carbon emissions," says Port Taranaki general manager commercial Ross Dingle. 👉 Click here for the full media release: https://lnkd.in/gzwbuX-f Simon Craddock l Ross Dingle l John Maxwell l Alex Park l Allan Melhuish l Pippa Farrell l KiwiRail #ports #shipping #rail #forestry #logistics #transportation #marine #maritime

  • 🌊 With New Zealand’s vast coastline and unforgiving sea conditions, any incident at sea requires a quick, well-prepared, multi-agency marine response. 📒 To be successful, organisation, planning and teamwork are necessities, and practice and training are required. ⚠️ Recently, we were involved in a Taranaki-based marine search and rescue exercise off Port Taranaki. 🛟 The scenario was that a waka had departed the port early in the morning headed for Waitara with six people onboard. A panicked phone call was received shortly after that they required immediate assistance, but no further information was received or contact made. 🛥️ Port Taranaki’s pilot launch Mikotahi and crew joined the coordinated search and rescue, alongside NZ Police, Coastguard Taranaki, Cape Egmont Sea Rescue Trust, South Taranaki Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving NZ, the Department of Conservation, Ngāti Te Whiti hapū, St John Ambulance, Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand, and multiple volunteers from the community. 🧏♂️ Coordinated from an onland base, communication was key as a number of multi-vessel searches, covering different areas of water, were carried out. ✅ Thankfully, the search and rescue was a success, with the waka crew ‘found’ and provided with medical care if required. 🤝 These types of exercises provide a valuable opportunity for agencies to come together and train, test plans and new concepts in a safe environment, and build further working relationships. • Earlier this week, we welcomed to Taranaki the second cruise vessel visitor of our 2024-25 season - the Silver Nova. Going on holiday or vacation is all about experiences and making memories, so in Taranaki we're working hard to make our cruise visitors' short stay in the region truly memorable! This includes a warm welcome by Ngati Te Whiti hapū as passengers step off the vessel; knowledge and help from a friendly team of New Plymouth city volunteer ambassadors who help the visitors navigate our town; and interesting and unique tours of the region for our visitors to experience. Making a memorable connection with the vessel is also important, so a plaque exchange is a valuable opportunity to meet the ship's captain, further promote our region and port, and look forward to return visits in the future. • Our 2024-25 cruise season begins tomorrow (29 November) with the arrival of the stunning, six-star ultra-luxury cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II. This season marks the second year of the five-year Taranaki Cruise Strategy, which aims to sustainably increase cruise to 28 vessel visits in 2028. To ensure the 2024-25 season gets off on a successful footing, a Taranaki-wide cruise operational team, which brings together representatives from Port Taranaki, Venture Taranaki Trust, New Plymouth District Council, iwi and hapū, retail and hospitality, and tourism operators, has been busy making sure the region is ‘cruise ready’ to provide visitors with an exceptional experience. While our cruise season is small in comparison with other regions, we're excited to welcome approximately 5,000 visitors in 2024-25, and show them all the great sights, experiences, retailers, cafes and hospitality Taranaki has to offer. • Here’s a nice timelapse of a vessel leaving port from the perspective of a tug - tug Tuakana assisting tanker Coral Express last week. You'll see that Tuakana is being driven stern (rear) first, which is because she's a tractor tug and has her propellers at the bow (front). The departure also took on extra importance, with homegrown tug master trainee Dan Green being assessed by Port Taranaki marine manager Ben Martin and harbourmaster Tony Parr. Becoming a tug master involves a lot of training, knowledge, practical skills and assessments. Dan did a great job during the assessment, and now has the authority to operate as one of our duty tug masters. #ports #shipping #marine #tugs #tugmaster #maritimetraining #harbour

  • At Port Taranaki we believe it's important to help the next generation of aspiring engineers gain experience and understanding of the industry. So, each summer, we offer a 10-week internship, during which the student gains valuable hands-on experience, practical skills, and exposure to real-world engineering challenges while working as part of our team. This summer, former New Plymouth Boys' High School student Marco Kraayenhof has joined us after completing his first year of a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours degree at University of Canterbury. As Port Taranaki engineering manager Ludo Galliegue says: "As a business we benefit too, as students bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, and a curiosity that can challenge us to think differently about our own practices.” 👉 You can read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dVNZA9CM #ports #marine #shipping #engineering #engineeringinternship #engineeringstudents #taranaki Simon Craddock l Ross Dingle l Ludovic Galliegue l John Maxwell l Pippa Farrell l Allan Melhuish

  • Protecting and enhancing the marine environment we work within and rely on every day for trade and business is a responsibility we take seriously. 🚢 🦭 🐟 🐧 As such, we continually work to improve our operations and infrastructure to protect and enhance the harbour. This includes carrying out a programme of work to install new slot drains and vortex separators on our log yards to help prevent bark and particles entering the harbour. The latest installation on Blyde Wharf has been one of the trickiest. The old, concrete stormwater outfall pipe that connects to the new drain excavation was broken, so needed to be fixed. Rather than a large and difficult pipe replacement, we decided to reline the pipe with a tough, PVC liner. While pipe relining is usually a relatively easy process, a few layers of complexity were added when the 7m heavy ‘snake’ needed to be wrangled under a wharf as the team worked from a work boat and had to manage shipping, tides, sea conditions, slippery rocks, pipes, cables, steam and high pressure air! Needless to say, we had a great crew on the job – our Port Taranaki team, and local companies Pipe Technologies Ltd and Whitaker Civil Engineering Ltd. Once the work boat was in position, the flexible PVC liner was warmed up with steam and fed into the pipe. A winch in the excavation at the other end pulled the liner through as it was fed from the seaward side. The liner was then sealed with inflatable bungs at each end, filled with air to push it up against the insides of the pipe, then filled with steam and cured for 30 minutes until the PVC hardened. The bungs were then removed. 👏 A great job from all those involved.

  • The world's seafarers do an incredibly important, but challenging, job transporting products around the globe, often spending months away from home, family and friends. 🚢 When they reach a foreign shore, it's nice to see a friendly face and have support available, which ship and port welfare officer Pieter Borsje provides at Port Taranaki. Pieter greets every vessel that docks, offering welcome packages, free wi-fi, and a listening ear. 👏 Thanks so much to reporter Carolyn Robinson and TVNZ Seven Sharp for telling Pieter's story and the great work he does. 🫶 Thanks also to the crew of the Ocean Amitie, captain Rogelio Baluzor Hoylar, and Phoenix Shipping Agents Limited for making it possible. 🙂 We're pleased to be able to help Pieter and support the seafarers who visit our shores. 👉 You can view the story here: https://lnkd.in/gyi8vC87 The Mission to Seafarers #ports #shipping #marine #maritime #seafarers #welfare #taranaki

💡 The team made light work of a towering job at the weekend! We’re in the process of removing and refurbishing the three Blyde Terminal log yard light towers, which have been standing tall and keeping the area illuminated for more than 20 years. Working on Saturday to avoid a clash with incoming log trucks in the area, the team got down to business to remove what’s known as LT7 (light tower No 7). First, a Titan Crane Hire 60 tonne crane provided the lift of a man-cage for the team to set up the rigging. Then, our mobile harbour crane lifted the 30m long and 3.7 tonne tower from its spot, and the Titan crane flipped it from a vertical to horizontal position – a delicate dance that was carried out safely and successfully! 💃 The tower will now be separated into sections, the structures safety tested, sand-blasted and painted, before it's reassembled and put back in place. 🤜 Thanks to the maintenance and engineering teams for the smooth lift plan design, the wharf services team crane operators for a pin-point accurate and safe lift, and Titan Crane Hire for their support. #ports #shipping #marine #engineering #craneoperations #logistics Simon Craddock l John Maxwell l Ross Dingle l Sam Houghton l Alex Park
