Stir up something new inside. Come with us and experience nature in New Zealand's south.

About us

Our family business was founded in Fiordland in the 1950s by tourism and conservation pioneers Les and Olive Hutchins. Sixty years later, we offer tourism experiences from Rakiura Stewart Island to Whakatipu Queenstown; including world-renowned cruises through Piopiotahi Milford Sound and Patea Doubtful Sound, the Te Anau Glowworm Caves and heritage steamship TSS Earnslaw. For us, the aim is still quite simple – to share the natural heritage and astounding beauty of the region with visitors – just as our founders intended.

  • Yesterday marked a historic moment for conservation in the Southern Lakes region - 18 takahē were released into the Rees Valley, just 1.5 hours north-west of Queenstown. These taonga species now call this stunning landscape home, thanks to the efforts of dedicated conservation teams from Southern Lakes Sanctuary Trust, Department of Conservation (DOC), Ngāi Tahu, and other valued partners. RealNZ is incredibly proud to have played a role in this effort, with funding from our 2024 Conservation Ball, held at Walter Peak last September, directly supporting the translocation. The event raised over $150,000, helping to create a safe and thriving habitat for the takahē by restoring native vegetation, controlling invasive species, and ensuring access to their natural food sources. “It’s incredible to see the real-world impact this funding and our conservation work represents - welcoming this important taonga species to the Rees Valley is an outstanding achievement from a lot of hard work from a lot of people," says RealNZ Ceo, Dave Beeche. A further two takahē releases into the Rees Valley are planned for later this year, with the aim of establishing a population of up to 80 takahē in the Rees Valley in 2025.

We're honoured and humbled to bring three Tourism Industry Aotearoa Awards home to the South today after last night's celebration of the New Zealand tourism industry, including the Air New Zealand Supreme Tourism Award. We took the win in both category awards we were finalists in; the Johnston's Coachlines Tourism Excellence Award (Large Business), and the KiwiRail Tourism Environment Award. We're also stoked to see the Auckland Airport Tourism Champion Award go to the International Antarctic Centre’s David Kennedy. We were incredibly proud that the awards we received reflect our business' rich history, our commitment to experience delivery, and our purpose to help the world fall in love with conservation. From our CEO, Dave Beeche CNZM: “RealNZ was founded 70 years ago this year, with a foundation of delivering exceptional experiences while being at the forefront of New Zealand conservation. That is a legacy we are proud to continue to this day through the energy and passion of every single team member. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be recognised by the judges for this mahi.” Dave's message to our team today was simple: it doesn't stop here. “It’s up to us to keep shaking things up, going the extra mile, and making a difference so that every guest leaves with a great story to tell.” We'd like to extend our thanks to the entire New Zealand tourism industry for an inspiring event, and a huge congratulations to all the other award winners and finalists.
