About us

Since opening in 1964, Rotorua Airport has changed dramatically, much like the city itself. We’ve come a long way, but we’re already planning for the future. Our vision is to have an airport Rotorua can be proud of, that welcomes and farewells passengers with the manaakitanga Rotorua was built on. We’re committed to ensuring Rotorua Airport can meet the demands of the future.

  • On 3 October 2024, we implemented key changes to improve flight reliability, including a newly designed flight path for incoming planes and updated minimum visibility clearance requirements for take-offs.   The Airport is continually looking for ways to lessen the impacts of adverse weather conditions. We’ve been working closely with Aeropath, leading experts in flight procedure design, to create a new customised flight path that allows some aircraft approaching Runway36 from the south to descend lower than before on the instrument flight approach before going visual to land.   This new approach will guide planes down around the southern terrain, aligning them more closely with the runway. This reduces the need for planes to circle the Airport or return to their departure point, improving the overall reliability of incoming flights and subsequent departures. It's important to note that this flight path has been specifically designed for ATR72 aircraft and pilots with the necessary additional approvals, and does not apply to Q300 models.   We have also introduced a revised take-off weather minima which will provide significant improvements on low cloud days.   Although these changes are expected to improve flight reliability, there may still be occasions when weather or other unforeseen circumstances prevent flights from taking off or landing.
