Fiona MacMillan (Seafood New Zealand's GM Communications and Marketing) has just been in three days of meetings with commercial fishing organisations from 24 countries. "A few years ago, I would have told you that New Zealand was ahead of the rest of the world in terms of fisheries management and behind in the way commercial fishing is viewed by the wider public. I have changed my mind on several fronts and for several reasons," she says. So where does New Zealand's seafood industry compare on dealing with misinformation, the "spatial squeeze" and bottom trawling technology? Get her take in today's Update: https://lnkd.in/gHKHWeDV #seafoodnz #seafood #update #opinion #internationalcoalitionforfisheriesassociations #icfa

Great news for the industry this week: starting 2 December 2024, seafood operators will no longer need an allocation to bring in fishing crew from overseas. (No cap! IYKYK!) Seafood New Zealand, along with many of you, has been pushing hard to get this cap removed and reduce pressure on the industry. And we've been working hard to attract and retain more Kiwis to the industry as well. But we won't stop here. Why are people so happy to recommend working in the seafood sector? We asked, you answered. Here's just a few of our favourite responses: ❤️ “It's good honest work, good for the soul.” ❤️ “It is a good industry, vibrant and offers great potential to new entrants. It is a changing industry and can be difficult and challenging… For many of us, it has been our life's work.” The other theme that came through is that many of you are doing it tough out there. And we hope to share the work we've been doing with the Ministry for Primary Industries on your behalf soon. But if you need help NOW, there are organisations you can reach out to — your company's EAP (Employee Assistance Programmes) or FirstMate. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend our first-ever Seafood New Zealand webinar earlier this week! It was great to hear from Ashley Nio-Aporo at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Jason Cate from Kantar about how to leverage our story and provenance in key international markets. We sent a quick survey out to all attendees, and would love your feedback. For those who weren't able to make it (or if you just want to refer to the data), we have made a recording of the session and the slides available on our website: https://lnkd.in/gSkP_kib We are planning to hold more of these "useful webinars" in the future — sign up to our weekly newsletter The Update to be the first to hear more: https://lnkd.in/gDrzPmH8
