Last month we were kindly hosted by Alice, Matt and Ella from Spark Arena (Aotearoa's largest indoor arena) who showed us the amazing mahi happening in the climate and sustainability space. I just wanted to highlight a couple of initiatives we saw firsthand 🎵🌏💡🌿 ♻️ Waste: we saw the work of Closed Loop in action. Spark Arena work closely with Green Gorilla and Closed Loop who provide waste sorting diversion services for all waste and recycling to ensure contamination does not occur and other circular economy solutions. They currently have a landfill diversion target of 85% for their events. 💡 Energy Efficiency: Spark Arena has transitioned to energy-efficient LED lighting for its venue spaces. This reduces energy consumption and lowers its carbon footprint during events. We also spotted an electric forklift, which drastically reduces Spark Arena's carbon footprint as well as reducing nasty exhaust fumes 👏. 🚍 Sustainable Transport: Spark Arena encourages event-goers to use public transport, bike, or walk to the venue to reduce the carbon footprint associated with parking and car use. The venue is well-served by Tāmaki Makaurau's public transport system, including buses and trains. 🐝 Nature: We explored their bee hives and secret garden, and it's inspiring to see a couple of hives at Spark Arena, especially with global bee populations on the decline. Hopefully, these bees are helping pollinate the nearby areas 🌸. As some of the group mentioned, maintaining the enthusiasm, the drive and collaboration is key to making meaningful change. Ka pai to all the organisations who give up their time to be part of this important mahi. Tātaki Auckland Unlimited are looking forward to seeing you at the next climate action hui in December! 🤝 Alice Larmer, Duane Wichman-Evans, Andrea Love, Dave Watson, Oleg Pakshin, Tee Atiau, Carrie Hope, Hanna Scott, David Bavage, Charlotte Guscott-Gregory Spark Arena | The Trusts Arena | Auckland Stadiums | Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) | Auckland War Memorial Museum | Aktive | Tātaki Auckland Unlimited
