  • ⏰🔴⚫⚪1 DAY TO GO: if you’re yet to oppose the Treaty Principals Bill, and are not sure where to start, we recommend the Amnesty International tips and submission template which was used as the framework for our own submission (see 🔗 in comments). Why submit a submission? Sustainability Trust has submitted to strongly oppose the Treaty Principles Bill, which undermines the intent and spirit of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) and risks significant harm to Aotearoa’s cultural, social, and environmental future. Sustainability Trust recognises Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the founding document of Aotearoa. As an organisation we work hard to achieve the kinds of relationships between Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti which were envisioned by the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We acknowledge there is much to be done to honour Te Tiriti, at a personal, organisational and systems level. It concerns us that this bill will: • reduce the constitutional status of the Treaty/Te Tiriti • remove its effect in law as currently recognised in Treaty clauses • limit Māori rights and Crown obligations • hinder Māori access to justice • impact Treaty settlements • and undermine social cohesion Submission deadline: is 11.59pm on Tuesday 7th of January ~ there is still time to submit. Please tautoko and make a submission today (see link in comments for a free template). 📸 Photo credit: our head of marketing (Kirsty O'Hara), along with many of our Sustainability Trust staff and our FillGood l Reusable Serviceware team, attended the recent Hīkoi. They walked alongside this beautiful wahine and her pēpē, sharing a flag, and ensuring nearby tamariki and whānau pipiri. #tetiriti #tautoko #socialjustice #haveyoursay

  • Large scale incineration of mixed waste is a false solution and bad news for our communities. Help stop the Te Awamutu incinerator.

ACTION ALERT: Make a submission on the Te Awamutu Incinerator now. Submissions open until 5pm on Wednesday, 18 December. It’s time everyone. We need you to make your voices heard. Make a submission to stop the Te Awamutu Incinerator. It is proposed to burn 3 million tyres a year along with thousands of tonnes of plastics, mixed waste and ‘flock’ (the residue of the scrap metal industry) in a residential neighbourhood, with a number of schools and community facilities immediately adjacent to it. Along with PM2.5, heavy metals, CO2, dioxin and furan emissions, the facility will produce mountains of toxic ash that will be trucked to hazardous waste landfills. Read our submission guide and add in your own perspectives: https://lnkd.in/dgrPGAjH

  • Day three of the Zero Waste Network Aotearoa National Summit kicked off right here at Sustainability Trust, showcasing Te Aro Zero Waste, Aotearoa’s most urban resource recovery centre in partnership with Wellington City Council, Wellington Curtain Bank and our Sustainable Homes operation! It was fantastic to be the starting point for the site tours, with groups heading to explore the incredible zero waste initiatives across Pōneke, including Otaihanga Zero Waste in Kāpiti, the Tip Shop Wellington, Kaicycle Incorporated and the newly launched headquarters for FillGood l Reusable Serviceware at SKY Stadium. Big thanks to Zero Waste Network Aotearoa and all those who joined us; individuals and organisations from across Aotearoa who are working collectively on some of society's toughest challenges for the benefit of our communities and environment. #collaboration #localsolutions #nationalnetwork #scalablesolutions #knowledgesharing #sustainablehomes #fairenergy #zerowaste #climateaction

  • Tautoko. Hīkoi mō te Tiriti arrives in Pōneke tomorrow. This is a significant event for Aotearoa. Sustainability Trust is not in support of Treaty Principles Bill, and the raft of anti-Te Tiriti legislation that undermines our shared relationship as Treaty partners. We have supported our staff to attend or volunteer where we can. Plan ahead:

The Zero Waste Network supports the Hīkoi mō te Tiriti o Waitangi, and will attend events around the motu. Starting tomorrow, a national Hīkoi will be travelling from Te Rerenga Wairua/the tip of the North to Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington in support of Te Tiriti. We think it is critical that all people and organisations across Aotearoa NZ who care about a peace and just future stand together for Te Tiriti now. As part of our commitment to Te Tiriti and to the Hīkoi, we have re-arranged Day 2 of our National Summit which will be happening on the day the Hīkoi travels to Parliament. This will allow Summit attendees to attend the Hīkoi and get involved in para kore/zero waste efforts at the event. We believe that a zero waste future is one built upon undoing the harms of colonisation past and present. It's our future to built together. Whaia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe me he maunga teitei.

  • Environment Hubs Aotearoa is into week 3 of the Safeguard our Future campaign. We incredibly grateful to EHA for being the solid foundation that has allowed so much of our mahi to grow and thrive. Without the vital support and connections provided by EHA, initiatives like FillGood l Reusable Serviceware and Otaihanga Zero Waste would never have been able to get off the ground and we have had the consistency of funding to keep initiative like the Welington Curtain Bank going. The EHA team continues to be a source of invaluable connections, guidance, and learning. Being part of EHA has given us a direct link to a larger network of changemakers, all working towards meaningful environmental impact. There are 20 other organizations like the Sustainability Trust across the country. With the recent loss of the Community Environment Fund, donations will not only help keep EHA strong but will also support Hubs like ours across Aotearoa. Let's keep working to Safeguard our Future. 🌱

Safeguard our Future Campaign Launches today! 🌍 Our efforts to protect the environment and support resilient communities are making a real difference, but Environment Hubs around NZ face large funding cuts, jeopardising our collective impact. Our 21 member hubs across the motu are building a future where communities are equipped to face environmental challenges, where our children live in harmony with nature, and where sustainable living is the norm. For the month of November, we’re raising funds to continue this vital and positive work. We’re asking you to donate, pledge support, or become a partner, and share with all your networks far and wide! 📢 Your support for this campaign will ensure that Environment Hubs Aotearoa can continue to lead the charge in building sustainable, resilient communities across New Zealand. With financial resources, we can continue our efforts to restore nature, combat climate change, and equip future generations with the tools they need to thrive. By supporting this campaign, you are investing in the future of Aotearoa New Zealand.  Let’s safeguard the future together! 🌱 https://lnkd.in/g-VWTE7N #safeguardourfuture #environmenthubsaotearoa #donatetoday
