How can uncrewed and remotely piloted aircraft improve our lives? This week we're hosting a special visitor from German Aerospace Center (DLR) - Daniel Sülberg, Head of The DLR National Experimental Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) at Cochstedt. He took some time out for a quick chat with Jesse Mulligan at RNZ on the benefits of UAS and how testing and R&D environments like Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre and Cochstedt help advance the technology and systems that will safely integrate them into our lives. 🎙️You can have a listen to Daniel and Jesse's kōrero here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gcUQzhCK #WairewaRūnanga | Te Taumutu Runanga | #SustainableTechnology | #UAVs | #RPAs | #DroneTechnology | #aerospacenz

About us
At the heart of Tāwhaki is a dual kaupapa to: 1. Heal and rejuvenate the unique whenua at Kaitorete An area of significant cultural importance renowned for its mahinga kai, taonga species and history. Home to numerous threatened and locally endemic plant, invertebrate, birds, and reptile species, with internationally recognised ecological value. 2. Advance Aotearoa’s aerospace industry Through the development of aerospace activities and R&D facilities on the whenua, there is the potential to generate significant and regenerative economic outcomes through job creation, capital investment and ancillary opportunities. ✨Reaching for new heights in 2024 and beyond✨ Our name, Tāwhaki, was chosen for the demi-god in Ngāi Tahu pūrākau (stories) who climbed to the heavens to bring mātauranga (knowledge) back to support life on earth. Tāwhaki was adaptive and innovative, using sheer tenacity and the guidance of others to chart his path and climb. Looking back at some of the activity at Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre this year we're reminded of this. The search for knowledge from above continues and the tenacity, creativity and collaboration in this awesome sector inspires us every day. We are grateful to work with you all! We are grateful too for recent awards from UAVNZ and Aerospace New Zealand for Service Provider of the Year and High Impact Aerospace Project of the Year respectively - swipe to the end below to see them sitting in pride of place. ⬇️ To all our friends - let's keep the mahi going in 2025 - reaching higher, adapting and innovating, to look out for the planet below. 🛣️🚀🌏🤜🏾 Te Taumutu Runanga | #wairearūnanga | Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment | New Zealand Space Agency | ChristchurchNZ | Dawn Aerospace | Kea Aerospace | Aerosearch Limited | blackmaps geospatial | Narix FSD | #aerospacenz

🌱Year three of State of Kaitorete 🌱 To walk where your ancestors walked, together with your whānau. To take your time on the whenua to spot the katipo spider, the skink, the marks and tools in the landscape that tell their own stories of occupation and activity. 🕸️🦎 These are the opportunities that State of Kaitorete opens up - an annual assessment of the hauora (health) of Kaitorete and the connection of whānau to place that is now in its third year. Over two days whānau from Te Taumutu Runanga and #WairewaRūnanga, Kaitorete mana whenua (indigenous people), revisit ten significant sites on Kaitorete and record their observations. This helps measure the impact of our mahi over time, share and build mātauranga (knowledge) and inform our planning and priorities for rejuvenation projects. Providing opportunities for whānau to connect with their whenua is one of our strategic priorities and State of Kaitorete is one of the main highlights of the year. Rejuvenation is both cultural and physical. Much of the land on Kaitorete was privately held and inaccessible for Kaitorete mana whenua for over 100 years before the establishment of Tāwhaki, which is jointly owned by mana whenua and the New Zealand Government. Tāwhaki purchased 1000 hectares on Kaitorete in 2021 to launch its kaupapa: to help advance aerospace in Aotearoa and heal and rejuvenate Kaitorete. One first-time participant in State of Kaitorete took his whānau out the next week to repeat what he'd learned - others talked about their feelings of empowerment and mana enhancement. This is what it's all about. We mihi to all the whānau who took time out for this mahi, and to Mapihi Martin-Paul and Jaz Morris from Boffa Miskell Limited and Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki Lincoln University (NZ) Lecturer Dyanna Jolly for their support. Watch out for more content from this epic two days in the new year! #environmentalmonitoring | #culturalmonitoring | Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment

Great to welcome our friends from JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre at Kaitorete last week. It's wonderful to continue strengthening this relationship following our visit to Japan as part of the business delegation accompanying Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in June. For our aerospace colleagues in Japan and beyond, Tāwhaki has the ideal environment for testing, flights and launch with: ✅ a multi-use facility situated on a vast and unpopulated stretch of land nestled between lake and sea ✅ access to clear skies, seas and key orbits ✅ close proximity to Ōtautahi Christchurch, the country's second largest city. The JAXA visit also featured University of Canterbury, Dawn Aerospace, Kea Aerospace, New Zealand Space Agency, ChristchurchNZ and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. The close relationships supporting aerospace innovation across our sector in Aotearoa were on full display and we're excited to see more collaboration with overseas partners grow. 🤝 #aerospacenz | #aerospaceengineering | #wairewarūnanga | Te Taumutu Runanga | Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment

✨Welcoming future aerospace stars to Ōtautahi ✨ We were so excited last week to welcome a special rōpū (group) of Māori and Pasifika students and their educators from across Aotearoa for the Aerospace New Zealand Space Camp. The three-day camp was designed to inspire and educate rangatahi (young people) from years 9 to 13 and their teachers on the awesome opportunities available in the aerospace sector. This is a kaupapa (purpose) we are truly proud to support! The camp included a special tour of the Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre at Kaitorete alongside visits with University of Canterbury, Air New Zealand and the Airforce Museum of New Zealand, and heaps of hands-on learning about space. Our Kaitorete Ranger Rulon Nutira accompanied the rōpū from local learning village Te Pā o Rākaihautū and said, "It was an awesome, world-class experience - our three girls who went want to be an astronomer, pilot and engineer and the two boys liked it all so much they can't choose." We'd call that a successful mission. 🚀🙌🏾 We look forward to seeing these faces out at Tāwhaki again in the coming years! /// 📸1 - Rulon Nutira with the rōpū from Te Pā o Rākaihautū on our sealed runway 📸2 - Aerospace Project Manager John Mann talking about our mahi from our nearly completed hangar 📸3 - You've not truly visited Tāwhaki until you've got the shot under the pou! #wairewarūnanga | Te Taumutu Runanga | New Zealand Space Agency #aerospacenz

Taking Your Drone to the Skies – Safely! New to flying drones? You may not know about AirShare, an essential platform for recreational drone pilots in Aotearoa. AirShare lets you log your flights and request permissions to fly in airspaces with restrictions, like near airports, aerodromes, and helipads. This helps keep our skies safe and accessible for everyone. As Tāwhaki is a published aerodrome (➡️ https://lnkd.in/gDCQCZJg ) you need approval for any flights within a 4km radius. 📝 Please submit your flight request through AirShare. And to the budding pilots out there – welcome to the skies! 🌄Check out some useful links below to help you on your way ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gTedg4dA https://lnkd.in/gHuvN8cb https://lnkd.in/gxmS-626 https://lnkd.in/gg5ZUV_j #DroneSafety #UTM #UAVs #AdvancedAviation
