Strengthening Māori Health and Well-Being

About us

Te Rau Ora (originally Te Rau Matatini) is New Zealand’s indigenous Māori organisation providing a range of local and national programmes to improve Māori Health. We have changed our name but not our passion nor our commitment – Strengthening Māori Health & Wellbeing is at the core of what we are doing. Our new name and look brings us into alignment with our mission, culture and belief to strengthen our people. The name ‘Te Rau Ora’ reflects our unique & inclusive way of capturing and exchanging overall kaupapa of what matters to Māori. We will maintain a commitment to the mental health and addiction sector and want the world to know that we are not just a workforce centre, but rather our overall focus is about the health & wellbeing of Māori.

  • TOHU Framework: Sensing and Interpreting Tohu to Heal from Trauma 🌿 The TOHU framework offers a powerful approach to understanding and addressing trauma through the lens of Māori knowledge and practices. Tohu (signs) help guide personal, eco-environmental, and spiritual wellbeing. Developed by Māori psychologists and mātauranga Māori specialists (including our very own Dr Andre McLachlan, Phillipa Pehi and Hera Kinred), this framework provides a holistic way to interpret tohu and promote healing from patu ngākau (psychological and spiritual trauma). • Kia ora e te iwi! We're thrilled to share highlights from our recent Tiaki Whānau Tiaki Ora Wananga at W'arepuni Marae , Hāwera! This special event brought together whānau and healthcare providers from across Taranaki to reconnect with ancestral roots, promote well-being, and uplift their spirits. Check out the video to see the love, laughter, and learning that filled our two days together! Shout out to the haukainga for the hospitality! And to the whānau and facilitators who attended. To the whānau from CASA and Tuiora , thank you for being present to support the kaupapa. Special mention goes to Ruanui health and ‘Kia Piki te Ora’ kaimahi - Mel Martin and Vincent Nuku for organising this wānanga and the passion you have for the wellbeing of your people. Mauri Ora

  • It’s okay to kōrero if you’re worried about someone. Strengthen connections with your whānau by being creative together—have device-free dinners, play games, or share whakapapa stories. Plan a walk up your maunga to reflect and reconnect, or learn a waiata that celebrates your roots. These shared moments create safe spaces for kōrero, building trust and aroha. Remember, even simple actions like showing you care and being present can make a big difference. Let’s nurture our whānau, together. 💛 #WhānauFirst #ArohaInAction #MentalWellness

  • This beautiful waiata reminds us of the treasures our tīpuna have gifted us. Let’s honour their legacy by cherishing and speaking te reo Māori—our unique taonga, our guiding light. 🖤🌏 Kia kaha te reo Māori! 🎤 Makayla Purcell-Mainini https://lnkd.in/gW3KGwtH #TeReoMāori #TaongaTukuIho #ManaMōtuhake Nei rā te kaupapa o te reo māori e He taonga tuku iho nō nga tipuna he parekawakawa, he mea hirahira e Toku reo, toku ohooho mapihi maurea whakakaimarihi Korerotia te reo i nga wa katoa Kia kore e rite ki te Moa Mana tangata, mana mōtuhake Tōku reo, tōku ohooho māpihi maurea whakakaimarihi Nei rā te kaupapa o te reo māori He taonga tuku iho nō nga tipuna he parekawakawa, he mea hirahira e Toku reo, toku ohooho mapihi maurea whakakaimarihi Toku reo, toku ohooho mapihi maurea whakakaimarihi
