The Māori Language Commission was set up under the Māori Language Act 1987 and continued under Te Ture Reo Māori 2016 / Māori Language Act 2016 to promote the use of Māori as a living language and as an ordinary means of communication. We are an autonomous Crown entity. We are responsible to Parliament for the use of public funds to support our objectives.

Communities connecting through te reo. 🤝 Ngā mihi nui to Te Tūhunga Rau Kōrero Mai Rōpū for sharing their celebration of Wiki o Te Reo Māori with us! They held a shared lunch at Te Tūhunga Rau filled with kōrero, laughter, waiata, and kai. 🤗 Their rōpū meets weekly to speak Māori, share in mihimihi and find hōnonga/connection with each other through waiata and karakia. Finding a space and community where you can connect with others on your reo journey is really valuable. Dr Ruakere Hond is a hugely influential language expert who has given decades to the normalisation and revitalisation of te reo Māori. Last year at Uhi Tai, he shared about some of the building blocks of language planning, which are Status, Use, Corpus, Acquisition, and Critical Awareness. Uhi Tai is the reo Māori normalisation symposium for champions of te reo Māori in the public and private sector.
