Actively involved in the lives of whānau and our community, Wakatū has a big agenda.
About us
Wakatū Group has its corporate offices based in Whakatū (Nelson), Aotearoa (New Zealand). With offices across Aotearoa and the world, Wakatū owns property and food and beverages businesses through its wholly-owned entities, Whenua, Kono NZ LP and AuOra. Manaaki is our charitable arm, which leads programmes focused on building the capability of our families and employees, which includes wānanga, cultural and educational development. Wakatū Group is owned by the Māori customary owners of the Nelson region. In centuries past, we settled in Nelson in a series of epic migrations. Etched in our collective memory, they are central to our identity. We are the People of the Heke – the People of the Migrations. In 1977, the Māori descendants of the hekenga, now the owners of the Nelson-Motueka-Golden Bay tenths reserves and occupation reserves, formed Wakatū to manage their land. Since 1977, we have strategically and purposefully designed Wakatū, to support the families of Wakatū, as well as our wider region. Our economic base has diversified into our property businesses and the export products we create from our land and water. With a strong heritage as gardeners and fishers, Wakatū has created brands that celebrate our culture and front our offerings of quality food and beverages. Although our products are available throughout world, we remain a family business and organisation.

After eight years of service as our Tumu Whakarae (Chief Executive Officer), Kerensa Johnston will be stepping down from the role in February 2025. It is impossible to overstate the impact Kerensa has had on our organisation and the legacy she leaves. Joe Hanita FCA, CPFA, CMInstD, Wakatū Chief Financial Officer and General Manager Corporate Services, has been appointed Tumu Whakarae from 21 February 2025. We are fortunate to have succession planning at the heart of our organisation, and there is a full and carefully planned transition programme in place to support the change. The High Court has today released a significant decision in our favour regarding Stafford v Attorney General. While there are still outstanding matters to decide, including the specific details of the award to be made, today’s judgment is a significant victory for the plaintiff kaumātua Rore Stafford, the customary land owners of the Nelson Tenths Reserves that he represents, and all who have a connection to the whenua at the heart of this issue. The decision upholds our fundamental property rights and ensures justice for our whānau and hapū after many years of seeking to recover our trust property from the Crown. In the words of Justice Rebecca Edwards: “The Customary Owners are like any other private litigant and their right to relief should not be curtailed simply because the defendant is the Crown. The plaintiff’s claim is determined according to the law, unaffected by the political objectives of the other branches of government which sit outside the courtroom doors.” Read the summary decision here: https://lnkd.in/g9WePkXB Ngā mihi nui to all who follow and support this kaupapa. It has been a long road to get to this point. We will keep you updated on next steps. #tehereānuku #makingthetenthswhole

The United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner has written to the New Zealand Government seeking a response regarding its alleged breaches of human rights in relation to the Nelson Tenths. This follows a visit to Nelson in 2023 by the United Nations’ highest ranked indigenous rights official, José Francisco Calí Tzay, to learn about our case. 💡 The letter highlights the significant and ongoing delay in resolving the case: “This delay prevents Nelson Tenths from exercising their right to the lands, territories, and resources in the Nelson region, and from accessing their traditional territories, therefore affecting the continued exercise of their traditional activities and spiritual ceremonies. Hence, the intergenerational passing of scientific knowledge about this area is also detrimentally impacted.” 💡 It asks the Government for urgent information on the steps it’s planning to take: “to reach a principled, fair, and effective solution that honors the Government's legal duties and recognizes the rights of Māori Indigenous Peoples as customary landowners.” 💡 It also asks about the Government’s intentions: “to return the lands of Māori or, if this is not possible, to provide fair and adequate compensation for the loss of land in line with international law.” The letter is signed by: 🖊 Alexandra Xanthaki, UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights 🖊 Margaret Satterthwaite, UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers 🖊 José Francisco Calí Tzay, UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples We await a substantive response from Justice Minister Hon Paul Goldsmith and Minister of Māori Crown Relations Hon Tama Potaka to these issues. 📸 UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples alongside whānau at Te Āwhina Marae, Motueka, in 2023 #tehereānuku #makingthetenthswhole #indigenousrights #humanrights

Following the news last week that the Government has allocated $3.6m to continue fighting us in court Kerensa Johnston, Te Here-ā-Nuku Project Lead, told Te Ao Māori News why we remain optimistic that the Crown will do the right thing - and that we're not going anywhere. #tehereānuku #makingthetenthswhole

The Government has allocated $3.6 million of taxpayer funds in this year's Budget to appeal the High Court's forthcoming decision, even though the Court’s decision has not yet been issued. The Budget allocation is designated for Te Arawhiti, the Office for Māori Crown Relations. “It is incredibly disappointing that funding has been allocated to continue to fight the case, rather than enter into a dialogue about how it can be resolved... It is particularly disappointing that the Office for Māori-Crown Relations, which was set up to foster good faith engagement with Māori, is instead funding legal battles against us,” said Kerensa Johnston. We have requested a meeting with Attorney-General Hon Judith Collins KC MP, the defendant on behalf of the Crown, to discuss a positive resolution of this case. #tehereānuku #makingthetenthswhole
