Providing transitional housing and individualised support services to homeless wāhine in the Wellington region.

About us

Our vision is to reduce and avoid homelessness in the Wellington region by offering wāhine the support they need to change their situation. Our mission is to provide wāhine transitional accommodation with the aim of finding suitable and affordable housing for tenants so they can become independent. We provide a range of services to holistically support wāhine to get back on their feet. Women who are referred to our sanctuary often struggle with historical trauma and complex issues, and have nowhere to call home. They come to us needing hands-on support and a safe environment to rebuild their lives.

  • Te Whare Nukunoa has been at capacity most months this year! Over August and September our service provided 762 safe bed nights, and we supported 24 women with a safe room, warm home-cooked food every day and hands-on supportive care, while also successfully transitioning 5 tenants into more suitable housing situations. However, it's not all good news; a shocking statistic also showed that we had over 24 referrals over these months, which is a huge increase compared to previous months this year – unfortunately, we cannot help all of these applicants, but we do our best to support and guide based on their unique situation. Thank you to our community for supporting our mahi, your help is needed more than ever and allows us to continue providing key services to women experiencing varied degrees of homelessness! #WHWT #ImpactReport #August2024 #September2024

    • WHWT – August and September Impact Report 2024
  • Recently we held a big event for our tenants, our staff and some of the board members of Te Whare Nukunoa. This event was named 'Me, Myself and I' by Hiria, our General Manager, to celebrate the present and past tenants of Te Whare Nukunoa. The purpose of 'Me, Myself and I' was to acknowledge the journeys that many of the women who have come through our doors are on and to celebrate the progress that all have made in their lives. Some of the tenants showcased artworks they've been creating, we enjoyed singing our hearts out to a few karaoke classics! And some of our wahine stood and shared writings of their harrowing but inspiring journeys with poems and short stories. We all shared beautiful kai that was provided by the Soup Kitchen and enjoyed specialty dishes by our own staff. It was a special event for us all to reflect and connect with the many stories and experiences that sit within Te Whare Nukunoa, from board members, staff and tenants. What a wonderful day and thanks to everyone who made it happen! #WHWT #November2024

  • At Te Whare Nukunoa, The Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust, we believe advocacy is about more than just amplifying voices—it’s about walking alongside wāhine as they navigate a social system that can often feel overwhelming and impersonal. Our role goes beyond providing safe, temporary accommodation. We work to empower the women we support, helping them access the resources, services, and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives. Whether it’s connecting with housing providers, navigating healthcare, or understanding legal rights, we stand as advocates and allies as much as we can. The social system can be complex and convoluted, but no one should have to face it alone. Advocacy is a crucial lifeline – helping wāhine feel seen, heard, and supported. Through our guidance and their resilience, we aim to help navigate these systems to ensure they respond to the people they are meant to serve. #WHWT #WALK #AdvocacyInAction #WomensSupport #NavigatingChange #CommunityCareStudioC Design

It’s a tough time all over the globe right now, and closer to home in Aotearoa but as I’ve travelled the country on my recent tour, nowhere seems to have been hit as hard as Wellington. Stories of deserted city streets, business closures, continual restructures and lack of job security in the public sector – it’s taking its toll so let’s support each other during these tough times. For the entire month of November, all my books are 50% off for those living in Wellington, simply use the code WLG to apply your discount and ensure it’s a Wellington address for delivery. Proceeds from all books sold during November will go to the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust. www.jessstuart.co.nz/store

Today, on World Homeless Day, we reflect on the challenges faced by homeless women in our community and the importance of organisations that are taking action. For the women we serve, it's about breaking the cycle—Trauma, addiction, mental health struggles, and isolation are some of the complex barriers faced daily, making it essential for us to provide not just housing but comprehensive, compassionate support. Every woman deserves a safe place to rebuild her life and we are here to offer that support. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Coalition to End Women’s Homelessness for including the Wellington Homeless Women's Trust in their upcoming research report (Full report out soon). RESEARCH ARTICLE – https://lnkd.in/gaUNAU77 Their work helps amplify the voices of women experiencing homelessness, shedding light on the unique challenges they face and highlighting the actions happening on the frontline that are generating success. Together, along with many others, we are working towards a future where every woman has access to the safe, stable housing and support services she needs to thrive. Let’s commit to making homelessness a thing of the past. #WorldHomelessDay #EmpowerWomen #EndHomelessness #WellingtonHomelessWomensTrust #WHWT

There shouldn’t be such a thing as World Homelessness Day. But living unhoused is a reality for many and for women, they are often invisible. Homelessness isn’t just about a lack of shelter - it’s about a lack of safety, dignity, and opportunity. It’s about the intergenerational impact of being uprooted on tamariki. It’s also about the compounding impact of the gender pay gap across women’s lives meaning our older women are one hospital discharge or terminated tenancy away from housing insecurity. We have a big research report on the way, and early insights show that despite the barriers, women remain aspirational and kaimahi/frontline teams are documenting the things that work. That’s what we’re recognising this World Homelessness Day. • Te Whare Nukunoa was very busy over the last few winter months. Now that spring has sprung, we can look back and see how much of an impact our service has made during the tougher months of the year. Over June and July we provided a massive 711 safe bed nights, we supported 25 women by providing a safe room, warm food every day and hands-on supportive care, while also successfully transitioning 6 tenants into their new homes. These were big achievements for our whare and our team, we can't wait to see how the next chapter unfolds for those special wāhine who have transitioned out. Thank you to our supportive community for supporting our mahi, your help allows us to continue providing important services to those who need it most! #WHWT #ImpactReport #June2024 #July2024

  • Big thanks and appreciation to the teams down at Z Miramar, Z Vivian St, Z Remutaka and Z Energy NZ for supporting Te Whare Nukunoa over the past month. Once again it’s been an amazing month of support, clearly evident in the amount of votes made by the Wellington community at each location. Good in the Hood is such a special initiative to be a part of – We are very blessed. The community support goes a long way and the donations will help us support many more women experiencing homelessness. Thank you to everyone who voted for us at all three locations, you’re all superstars! #GITH #goodinthehood #community #WHWT

  • Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is here and this week is an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate te reo Māori as a taonga, a national treasure of Aotearoa. Taking a moment to reflect on how language connects us to our culture, history and identity is how we ensure te reo Māori continues to flourish in everyday life. For wāhine we support, many of who are whakapapa Māori – te reo Māori plays a vital role in creating a sense of belonging and community. By embracing te reo Māori in our whare, we not only honor the indigenous language of this land but also promote inclusivity and respect for all cultural backgrounds. At Te Whare Nukunoa, we aim to foster an environment where te reo Māori is used regularly and is appreciated. As we acknowledge Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, everyone can participate in their own way, whether learning a new word, understanding its deeper cultural significance, or simply being open to listening. By doing so, we build a stronger, more connected community where everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, feels empowered and valued. Kia kaha te reo Māori ake ake ake – thank you for joining us in celebrating te reo Māori - A FOREVER LANGUAGE.
