Summer Trip to Senkoji Park: A Perfect Encounter of Culture and Nature

Late August in Onomichi brings the unique enthusiasm and vitality of summer. Stepping into Senkoji Park, you are greeted by a refreshing sea breeze and lush greenery, instantly dispelling the fatigue of the scorching heat. This trip not only offers magnificent scenery but also allows me to deeply appreciate the unique charm of Japanese culture and history. Summer Scenery of Senkoji Park Senkoji Park in summer has a particularly vibrant feel. Walking up the park's paths, the dense trees form a natural green canopy, with sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating a picturesque scene. Standing on the observation deck, your gaze is instantly drawn to the expansive view of Onomichi city and the Seto Inland Sea, the majestic landscape of mountains and sea is truly irresistible for photography. What left the deepest impression on me was the sunset. When the golden sunlight slants across the entire sea surface, the waves sparkle with the wind, as if the warmth of the entire summer is melted into this scene. This moment is really worth quietly appreciating, as if even time slows down. Cultural Depth of Senkoji: A Historic and Miraculous Temple The history of Senkoji can be traced back over 1200 years, founded by the great monk Kobo Daishi Kukai, it is one of the symbols of Onomichi. Entering Senkoji, the solemn atmosphere of the main hall immediately makes one feel the beauty of traditional Japanese religious architecture. This place is not just a tourist attraction, but also a place for spiritual tranquility. What is special is that Senkoji is an important site on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The Shikoku Pilgrimage is a famous pilgrimage route in Japan, consisting of 88 temples. Pilgrims, dressed in white and holding staffs, walk to each temple to pray for inner peace and blessings. As an extra site on the pilgrimage, Senkoji attracts many practitioners and travelers. I happened to meet a pilgrim here, and after chatting with him for a while, he said that each temple has a different spiritual energy, and Senkoji feels particularly warm and inclusive. There is also a special wishing spot in the temple, the "Tamaki" hanging on the cliff. It is filled with various wooden wishing plaques, each recording people's wishes or gratitude. Standing in front of the Tamaki, the mountain breeze gently sways the wishing plaques, the tinkling sound is particularly calming, as if all wishes can be conveyed to the heavens and earth. Slow Life in the Alleys of Onomichi Descending from Senkoji, I chose the famous "Onomichi Slope", a path full of retro nostalgia, with traditional Japanese houses on both sides, bamboo blinds hanging by the windows, and a few quiet cafes and craft shops in the alleys. Occasionally, you can encounter Onomichi's signature cats, lazily lying by the roadside, not afraid of people at all, becoming the cutest scenery in the alleys. I also had a summer matcha ice smoothie at a teahouse by the roadside, the slightly sweet and refreshing taste was really perfect for such an afternoon. The shop owner shared many local stories of Onomichi with me, such as the wishing secrets of Senkoji and the origin of Onomichi ramen, giving me a deeper understanding of this city. Travel Tips Best Time: It is recommended to go up the mountain around 3 or 4 PM, to avoid the midday heat and catch the beautiful sunset. Transportation: Taking the cable car up the mountain is the most convenient option, with great scenery along the way; choose to walk down to slowly experience the charm of Onomichi's alleys. Notes: Remember to bring a bottle of water and comfortable shoes, the small paths around Senkoji require some walking to fully appreciate its charm.
