Maastricht, Netherlands: A City Walk from the Bookstore in Heaven to the Gates of Hell
👼Book Store Dominicanen
Originally a Dominican monastery church, it has been rated as the most beautiful bookstore in the world, attracting many tourists. In addition to books, the store also sells light snacks, drinks, postcards, and souvenirs. It's a great place to take a break during your trip, soak in the historical atmosphere, and write postcards to friends and family.
📍Address: Dominicanerkerkstraat 1, 6211 CZ Maastricht

😈Helpoort
The oldest city wall in the Netherlands, named during the 14th-century plague when patients and their families said their goodbyes here. Follow the signs to find a narrow and somewhat difficult staircase leading to a small history museum, showcasing different periods of Maastricht and the city's history. The staff are very friendly and patient!

Trip to Maastricht 🇩🇪
It was a weekend getaway to Maastricht, Germany. We started our day in Maastricht by visiting the Vrijthof, the city's most famous square. Surrounded by historical buildings, including the stunning St. Servatius Basilica and St. John's Church with its distinctive red tower, we wandered around, soaking up the lively atmosphere. The square is a great spot to grab a coffee and people-watch 🙌🙌🙌
📍Vrijthof, 6211 LE Maastricht, Netherlands*
We also walked along the Maasboulevard by the river. The view of the Maas River at sunset 🌅 is breathtaking, and it was the perfect way to wind down before dinner.
📍Maasboulevard, 6211 JW Maastricht, Netherlands*
We also visited Natural History Museum Maastricht. We explored its fascinating collection of fossils, including the famous Mosasaur skeleton. It's a great spot for anyone interested in natural history.

📍De Bosquetplein 7, 6211 KJ Maastricht, Netherlands*
We walked to Helpoort, the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands. We climbed to the top for a view over the old city walls and imagined what life would have been like during medieval times. Nearby, we found the lovely Jekerkwartier, a district with narrow cobbled streets, historic buildings, and small boutiques. We enjoyed wandering through its quaint alleys and discovering unique shops 🏬
📍Sint Bernardusstraat 24B, 6211 HL Maastricht, Netherlands*
We tried a restaurant, Café Sjiek and ordered the Maastrichtse Ragout (a local meat pie)🥧 . The pastry was flaky, and the filling was flavorful, a perfect choice! 💯💯💯

📍Sint Pieterstraat 13, 6211 JM Maastricht, Netherlands
We also explored the St. Pietersberg Caves. These limestone caves are filled with a network of tunnels created by centuries of mining. Our guide shared fascinating stories about their use as a refuge during wars, and we were impressed by the wall carvings left by miners.

📍Luikerweg 71, 6212 NH Maastricht, Netherlands*
We then ended our trip with dinner at Harry’s, a stylish restaurant located in the Wyck district. I would recommend the three-course menu featuring seasonal ingredients.
The ambiance was cozy, the service was excellent, and every dish was beautifully presented and delicious.

A City like a Museum
Maastricht is such a beautiful and compact city. It has so many things to see and the people are very friendly. The whole town center is a museum. We enjoyed the Markt, the Vrijthof, the, Onze Lieve Plein, the Helpoort, Old City walls, Bishop’s Mill, Aldenhof Park and the Maas River.
Right at the start of the trip we went to the Bishop’s and bought Plum Vlaai, chocolate chip cookies and waffles. There is no better way or motivation to start your trip in this manner. Lots of narrow cobblestone streets fronted by higher end boutique-ish stores - too many for the population to support so I asked questions and was generally told that Maastricht is a shopping destination for the Dutch and other Europeans, largely for atmospheric reasons. Nice bars & cafes. Lots of shopping to be done and a very small walkable picturesque centre. Maastricht has something for everyone!
