A Taste of Shanghai at The Bund
#chinatrip
Tucked away in the bustling heart of Penang, The Bund is a hidden treasure that transports you straight to Shanghai with its authentic flavors and vibrant atmosphere. Located in George Town, this stylish eatery pays homage to its namesake, the famous waterfront area in Shanghai, and brings a slice of that iconic city right to your plate.
The moment you step inside The Bund, you're greeted by a warm, inviting ambiance that blends traditional Chinese decor with modern touches. The rich red and gold color scheme, paired with intricate wood carvings and vintage photographs, evokes a sense of nostalgia for old Shanghai. It's the perfect setting to enjoy a meal with family or friends, whether you're reminiscing about past travels or dreaming of your next adventure.
The menu at The Bund is a delightful journey through the diverse culinary landscape of Shanghai. I started with the signature xiao long bao, delicate steamed dumplings filled with a savory broth and tender pork. Each bite was a burst of flavor, the perfect balance of rich and light. Next, I indulged in the crispy sweet and sour pork, which had just the right amount of tanginess and sweetness, making it impossible to resist. To finish, I savored their renowned egg tarts, a flaky pastry with a creamy, custard-like center that was just divine.
What truly sets The Bund apart is its commitment to authenticity. Every dish is crafted with care, using traditional recipes and fresh, quality ingredients that capture the essence of Shanghai's culinary heritage. Whether you're a fan of Chinese cuisine or simply looking for a new dining experience in Penang, The Bund offers a memorable journey through taste and culture.

True Italian food finally in Disney town!!
We have been so many times in Disney town, and despite the place has its undeniable magic atmosphere, there was something missing: good food options. Now someone finally solved the problem, by opening a new Italian restaurant: Favola.
They are the same people of Alimentari, so expect true italian food, good pizza and drinks at reasonable price.
Best happy hour in Disney town, don't miss it.

Crayfish popcorn? Shanghai good tour with my parents from California. It’s difficult to find California wines in China. Such a shame because the ones that are here are not a good representation. But oui la la, mom loved the French wines! Everyone went Gaga over the local beers. I think mom and dad will definitely be back to Shanghai, not to see me, but to eat the food. #foodie #travel #shanghaicuisine #shanghaitravel

The old streets of Shanghai
There are so many beautiful, old streets in Shanghai with authentic, ancient buildings. On every street you can try amazing Chinese food and of course buy souvenirs. Everything is of course also worth seeing at night with all the lights around the buildings and rich night life that Shanghai offers. Many streets don't open shops very early in the morning so it's worth coming at lunch time and not earlier or just at dinner time. Definitely worth discovering.

DingTeLe Shanghai, noodle heaven
Address - DingTeLe is located inside a community at 494 Middle HuaiHai Road in Shanghai. It's not easy to find as it's not on a main road, but you'll see the restaurant as soon as you step through the community gate.
Ambiance/Facilities - The restaurant is small, but makes up for it by having more seats on different levels. The great thing about it is that you can dine here 24 hours a day, which makes it the perfect breakfast spot. The restaurant was even recommended by Michelin.
Highlights - DingTeLe has all kinds of dishes such as fried pork chops and yellow croaker noodles, but the real star are the scallion noodles, called CongYouMian. They are very simple, but very tasty. Noodles with scallion oil, shredded pork and fried scallions.

Lingang quest: Dishuihu’s sculpture park
Lingang new city is located in southeastern Shanghai, rapidly developing into a gorgeous and beautiful city surrounded by green areas, Dishui lake, canals, wetlands and Nanhuixincheng beach.
If you are going around the Dishui lake you might find very areas of shadow (desperately, in a very hot summer morning) and rest. This scenic spot is the best in all Dishui Lake China Masters Theme Sculpture Park.
This spot gives you the whole view of the lake and a nice view of Dishuihu West Island (although is under construction and we were not able to enjoy it that much). It has a public bathroom, extremely important if you’re walking around this area.
We found lots of people taking pictures, eating ice creams and children playing freely. This is the major shadow spot, so most people stays around here. This morning was a little too hot.

Lingang quest: A kiwi rest by the lake
Lingang new city is located in southeastern Shanghai, rapidly developing into a gorgeous and beautiful city surrounded by green areas, Dishui lake, canals, wetlands and Nanhuixincheng beach.
If you are going around the Dishui lake you might find very areas of shadow (desperately, in a very hot summer morning) and rest. Kiwiana restaurant it’s not only located within the Lingang New City Main Urban Area City Park (for some reason, this area has a very long name and it’s divided in units), but has this amazing view of the lake.
This New Zealand style restaurant is an amazing option to explore, restaurant architecture and ambience is beautiful. Also, it’s located among the area of sculptures, so you can go for a walk after
your meal. We didn’t eat here because of time, and My companion’s reluctance to try foreign food. However, I’ll definitely will be coming back soon. Food looks delicious.

Lingang quest: Noodles
Lingang new city is located in southeastern Shanghai, rapidly developing into a gorgeous and beautiful city surrounded by green areas, Dishui lake, canals, wetlands and Nanhuixincheng beach.
A few steps from the lake you can find Shangu Noodles, very crowded place and highly recommended. Plates are big, ambience is calm and try to give an old Beijing city impression (according to my Chinese friend). Although, we found the noodles to be a bit salty.
Considering this area is still under construction, you find many empty buildings or relatively expensive restaurants, therefore this is still a good option near the lake. During a very hot summer day, walking around this area with very little shadowing or resting spaces, you just take what you get.

Songjiang quest: Super spicy
Wangxiang Yuan is a Hunan cuisine restaurant located in Wanda Plaza, Songjiang district. There are six Xiangxiaodi Hunan flavor Yirenshi restaurants in Shanghai, seems like this franchise initiated in 2002.
One of the most popular things about this restaurant is the lady in traditional Hunan dress inviting you in. This Hunan food 🥘 restaurant has a nice calm ambience to visit with family or groups, you have many fresh vegetables outside for presentation.
Although Sichuan food is known to be spicy 🌶, Hunan food may be even spicier 🌶 🌶 , with a bit of sour from the vinager. This restaurant aims to bring the experience of Hunan into Shanghai. Definitely try the fish dishes, they are very popular and delicious.
If you can’t manage spice, be very careful about what you order.

Fancy Asian food in Shanghai Centre
Portman’s Boteman in West Nanjing Road is a fancy restaurant located in East building of the Shanghai Centre, next to the waterfall wall garden.
This restaurant mostly focuses on seafood 🦞, bringing together dishes from Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in an explosion of flavors. As amazing as it sounds, it’s quite expensive too. Be prepared to expend a few hundreds in a small meal. The meat 🥩 dishes look amazingly good. Drinks and cocktails have a nice presentation.
There are few good dessert options, too. However, as delicious as they look I’m not willing to pay around 100RMB just in a small dessert dish.

Charcoal drinks?
A Charcoal is a gorgeous (and expensive) Japanese restaurant located in Shanghai Centre. This restaurant has a simple but elegant ambience, perfect for a romantic date or a meeting that requires privacy.
Menus are in English, Japanese and Chinese. So many seafood 🦞 and meat 🥩 options to chose is hard to decide. Also, you will spend minimum 350 RMB in a dinner, of two dishes and no drinks. Drinks are mostly sold in bottle, so add a couple more hundreds. Presentation of the dishes is gorgeous, mostly focused on wangyu barbecue.
Although everything looked delicious, I went for a simple beer and a daifuku (also called daifukumochi, popular Japanese cakes made from a chewy glutinous rice). Very simple but also very good. Not sure if I’ll come back again, too expensive for me.

Curry & pho for a summer evening
If you want to try an authentic Vietnamese restaurant (as they claim) in Shanghai, Saigon Mama is a delicious option you should try. Ambience is charming, staff is nice and seem to be happy in their work.
My order was a chicken yellow curry 🍛. Very tasty and right amount of spicy (be sure you tell the cook how much/little spice you can manage). Bowls are huge, yet my plate looked a bit empty (or maybe I just wanted more). Pho 🍜 dishes are the most popular among the other clients, and delivery orders.
A detail the surprised me, was the coconut 🥥 over my rice. Give the meal a nice taste with the curry, not sure if this is just presentation or it’s common in Vietnamese food. In general, My experience here was quite nice.

A romantic date with Mexican brunch
Pistolera is a popular Mexican food restaurant in Shanghai. This branch is the new location for West Nanjing, next to the Portman Ritz-Carlton hotel.
During the day, Pistolera is a great restaurant to visit for brunch. Very little people and delicious food, during the night it becomes a crowded and fun place to hangout with your friends. If you like to consider a brunch date (specially if is a blind date), this is a perfect spot. Gives you the privacy you want, in a safe location (for inside the building and many people moving around).
My favorite dish in Pistolera is the Tortilla soup, a taste from home. Any margarita jar is great for your brunch, to keep the conversation going without drinking too much. Now, if you want dessert, go for the churros with ice cream 🍨. Very sweet, but very good!

Columbia O: Spain taste
We went exploring a new area of Shanghai we heard so much about: Columbia Circle. This is a heritage building complex located in Yan’an area. Near the pool area, you can find several cafés, restaurants and beautiful spots to get pictures.
Pirata 🏴☠️ is a Mediterranean style restaurant where, if you are lucky to grab a spot, you can enjoy a nice glass of wine or a beer in romantic dinner by the pool. Food is very good, although the tostadas/toast are expensive for small serve. Ambience is nice, music is mostly Spanish (trova).
If you want to eat paella or any cazuela 🥘 dish, you need to wait 45 minutes while it gets done. Therefore, this is not a place to visit if you are hungry. Iberian ham is delicious. Beer 🍺 it’s a bit bitter than you may expect in China. My recommendation is to try the paella with red wine 🍷.

Columbia O: Japanese Food
We went exploring a new area of Shanghai we heard so much about: Columbia Circle. Columbia Circle is located in Yan’an area.
Heiseiya is a Chinese version of a typical izakaya. Perfect for a meal or spare your time drinking in Japanese styled restaurant. Decoration resembles any izakaya, food tries to be authentic (not completely, according to my Japanese friend) and music are old Japanese songs from the 70’s-80’s.
During our visit the restaurant was super crowded, we had to wait a few minutes while a table became available. Food was quite nice, specially the fish and the rolls. There’s no sushi 🍣 or many traditional dishes available, either. Nevertheless, their liquor many is quite complete. A bottle of any umeshu (wine plum) is 300RMB, and it’s quite big.
Dishes are affordable, some are small but others are big. Better to come in company, to share a few dishes. In case you decide to come alone, you can sit in entrance bar to enjoy your food and drinks 🍺 on a very Japanese style.

Songjiang quest: Brunch
A beautiful place to have brunch in Songjiang area is A++ Bistro. Located next to Fuyue hotel is an easy place to spot, although some renovations outside may not make it so interesting at first glance, just wait to go inside and taste the food! This restaurant is supposed to be 3 floors, but I guess our timing was bad.
Either for a coffee ☕️ , spaghetti 🍝 or some ribs, brunch options get better and better if you decide to go with company. More people implies more dishes you get to try. Not a big fan of drinking my coffee while eating ribs (that’s for digestion after a meal), but you can change the coffee for juice or go with water.
Some of the salads 🥗 look quite tasty. Meat 🥩 cuts are big, perfect for meat lovers. Pasta and roasted chicken is also delicious. They have some nice dessert options too but we didn’t try it.

Songjiang quest: Stroll in Rongmei Rd
Songjiang is recently investing a huge amount of money on their city embellishment, as they are competing for the title of “One of the most beautiful cities in China”. This includes improvement of green areas, creation of new green areas (parks), illumination, maintenance of streets, boulevards, and waterfronts/channels.
During my stroll, was quite nice to ride a bike under the trees 🌳, specially under this summer heat. The parks and green areas are certainly beautiful, but night illumination of some of them is bad planned. For example, the green area from pic 1 (Zhongshan Office’s) can’t be seeing at night. The clock tower is gorgeous at night.
Zhongshan area is full of tiny shops, in a very Chinese style: Chinese fast food, clothing shops and supermarket. Feels more like old fashioned modern Chinese style (if makes sense). One of those areas frequently visited for locals, and they are not used to see any foreigner around. Perfect for those looking for a real culinary experience for Chinese food.

Songjiang quest: Craving for pizza?
Closer to Songjiang downtown you find Shihuite Chengyuan Commercial Plaza. Papa John’s Pizza is located in 1F (do not confuse with B1), although is easy to spot from the street due to its “Pizza” sign. Even if you are not thinking in pizza, you can’t stop thinking about it once you see it.
Papa John’s is a popular franchise worldwide, nevertheless many people think food is same in every restaurant or country. Well, is not. This particular restaurant in bigger than others you can find in Shanghai, probably the only pizza restaurant in the area. Songjiang branch offers different pizzas 🍕, fried chicken 🍗 , spaghetti 🍝, BQQ options, some pizza quesadillas (pic) and most meals are a Chinese adaptation of Italian food.
Despite the popular name, like will happen with many restaurants in China, try to think in this restaurants like a gastronomic fusion. If you open your mind, you will realize food different, and quite good. This place had little people inside, but many order by delivery. Also, this particular restaurant has a small section for children.

Songjiang quest: Fuyue Hotel
Fuyue Hotel is one of the biggest hotels in Shanghai, with enough capacity to receive over 1,500 people for a given event. When you enter, you first get to admire the palm trees and a gorgeous fountain mid lobby.
Rooms are big and clean, although a bit expensive (~700RMB per night). There are three restaurants available in 1st (buffet style) and 2nd floors (seafood🦞). Food is quite good, specially the pastry (and I don’t even like desserts🍰). Many different dishes are available, noddles and rice as basic staples, and fruit to refreshing your stomach after eating so much.
Fuyue offers a gymnasium and a swimming pool, perfect for these summer days. Something I found absolutely surprising was to find a KTV in 2F. This hotel feels like indoors city. Additionally, Songjiang’s waterfront and few commercial malls and restaurants are available a few steps away from main door.

Night stroll in Xintiandi area
Cor! is a super cute coffee shop ☕️ in Fuxing Middle Rd. Location seems quite small, but it’s actually spacious inside. You can either sit in a small terrace enjoying the hot summer night, or inside to keep the heat away (or run from the rain). Location is a bit difficult to find, as entrance is just a door along the street. However, door is tiny so the magic stays inside.
Ambience is quite relaxing, gotta love the bird houses hanging outside with the plants 🪴 . Decoration inside is also cute. Better to go during afternoon or evening, outside decoration can’t be fully appreciated during the night.
Must say, this is not an ordinary coffee shop, as you can also get wine, many dessert 🧁 and savory snacks, and cold drinks (coffee based drinks and cocktails 🍹 too). Decoration of drinks and desserts is super cute. Seems like a very good option for a quick brunch.

Food Diaries: Chifrijo-ish in Xuhui
Moka Bros is located next to Xiangyang Park. The ambience is quite good, relaxing, and pet friendly! Was nice to see dog owners to come and chill with their dogs. Definitely a place I’ll come back.
This restaurant has three parts: an open side to drink in summer, inner tables for nice conversations, working or even as dating spot; and a higher place to sit down in soft balls to spend your day, chilling.
Food is great, and proportional to price. This particular dish I order was Mexican 🇲🇽 stylish, with chicken fajitas. Nevertheless, flavor was very similar to a Costa Rica 🇨🇷 traditional dish called ‘chifrijo’. Made me feel at home. Therefore, there’s a huge bias for me in this case 😂
To order, you need to go to counter. They also have self-served water bottles and napkins to get your own drink, if you don’t want to wait for the waitresses.

Sunday night BBQ in Xintiandi
As you know, I’m a big fan of bbq restaurants. Chuxiaoge in Fuxing Plaza (Soho) in Xintiandi is a nice finding. Relatively cheap, tasty and open.
Something funny about Shanghai is the difficulty to find restaurants open at night, despite the fact this city never sleeps. There are not many restaurants open after 9pm, specially on a rainy weekend. Therefore, if you are in the area you shoul definitely grab a bite here!
Staff are quite nice, ambience is inviting. Not sure how crowded will be during the day. Beer drinks are good, specially with bbq. Meat and seafood 🦞 sticks are very tasty. Chuxiaoge additionally have rice 🍚 and noodles 🍜 options, if you feel bbq sticks are not enough.

A secret recipe for the sweetest cake
Secret Recipe is a coffee shop and restaurant located FOR shopping mall (Exit 3, Line 9). Place is spacious, cute ambience and open area for these hot summer days. I find particularly interesting that they have the main local and a small window inside the mall.
Cakes 🎂 look great. There is a seasonal specialty you definitely must try: peach 🍑 and coconut 🥥 cake 🍰. Even for not sweet tooths, this combination is hard to ignore. Specially during summer.
Fruit juices are made from real fruit and not bottled concentrate, this is important. So hard to find a beverage that’s not a fruit flavored drink but actual juice. Coffee ☕️ is a blend, like you can find in most coffee shops in Shanghai.
Part of these coffee shop advertising is that they have over 165 years of service, I guess this is a not well-known international franchise.

From Colombia & Kenya to you
Shanghai is the city with more coffee shops in the world. Among those shops, Starbucks franchise is the one that wins. Almost in every corner, in every mall, there is a Starbucks. However, once I arrived to China I realized some of these shops are quite special. Some are vintage, some crowded, but only few of them a nice place to work in.
Starbucks in Nanyangjing Rd is one of these few places were, despite the fact is extremely crowded at any time, remains quiet and it’s one of the favorite places for many people to come and work (pic 3).
Also, their cakes 🍰 offer varies a little from other sites I had seen. Summer offers includes lots of coconut and mango flavored cakes 🧁. Also, pineapple, peach and grape seasonal drinks to refresh your day.

Enjoyable Takeouts: Dinning Outdoors
For summer, one of my favorite things to do in Shanghai is to have my meal outdoors. As long as rain and mosquitoes allow. This is one of my favorite places in Tongji University, next to the pound and the metal sphere (that looks like archeological stone spheres in Costa Rica).
One of the preferred take out locations for students is Subway. The most healthy, at least. Subway in Tongji Plaza has also a small place upstairs to dine in, if you prefer. Main plus, this restaurant has a refill drink bar. You can order the daily combo (25 RMB) and have access to all beverages you can drink. Also, any place that has jalapeño (spicy pepper) is always preferred. If you enjoy spicy like me, chose the spicy mayo sauce. It’s the closest to chipotle (Mexican sauce).
Staff is quite friendly and speak English, enough for taking your order, which is highly appreciated by all international students just arriving in and speak no Chinese.
