An ancient water town with a history of thousands of years: Xitang
#2024Travel Review
#Xitang, a famous ancient water town in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, has a long history of thousands of years. It is also the "Red Dust Inn" in the movie "Mission Impossible" by Tom Cruise and the "Red Dust Inn" in Jay Chou's song. It is also an AAAA-level tourist attraction.
Walking through the water town Zeguo, the stone arch bridges and old houses and alleys, it feels like you have returned to ancient times. It is really antique and has another kind of humanistic style that you cannot feel in big cities.
When visiting Xitang, it is recommended to stay one night and experience the ancient inn, especially in the early morning and after nightfall, without the hustle and bustle of tourists, this is the purest ancient town of Xitang.

Shanghai Accommodation - A Little Jiangnan Residence in Zhujiajiao.
I visited Shanghai for five days in March, and on the first day, I headed to the Jiangnan small town - Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, which is a scenic spot on the outskirts. From Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Airport, you can take a direct bus for ¥36 per person, and it takes about an hour to get there, which is very convenient.
🚇Transportation: Close to Hongqiao Airport, you can take the subway directly to Zhujiajiao Station from Hongqiao Railway Station, and then call a car with Didi to the guesthouse. However, the guesthouse is located in a small alley among residential buildings, which is quite hard to find and easy to get lost in, but it is very close to the surrounding attractions, about a ten-minute walk to Fangsheng Bridge.
🤵🏻Service: There is no front desk service, and there is a phone number at the door. You need to contact the homeowner yourself, which can be a bit inconvenient. Foreign travelers usually do not have a mainland number, and I really don't know how they would contact the homeowner.
🏠Room: A delicate one-bedroom suite with a river-view terrace HK$870.97 per night (original price)
😄The area is quite large, with two floors. The upper floor has a large double bed, a large TV (but you can't watch programs, 😨completely useless) and a small window desk. The lower floor has two halls, one with a four-person mahjong table near the entrance, and the other with a sofa and coffee table near the terrace, equipped with large square glass windows, overlooking the terrace and riverside. 👍The best part is the terrace view, 😍where you can enjoy the view of the small houses across the river, reminiscent of Tai O in Hong Kong.
❌The biggest drawback, which is also quite unbearable 💢, is that there is no 🚫hot water when showering, only lukewarm water. No matter how much my friend and I twisted the knobs and turned on all the power, the water was still not hot enough, and the water pressure was very weak 😭. On a night with only 8 degrees, we felt like we were freezing 🥶while showering, ☹️almost getting sick from the cold. Because of this drawback, 😫I would not stay again, nor would I recommend it. Fortunately, I stayed at half price, otherwise, it would not be worth the original price. Additionally, there are many guesthouses with a similar style in the vicinity, with many options, and most of them are available for same-day check-in.

Zhujiajiao, Shanghai: The Disappointing Tangyuan Experience
Upon dropping off my luggage, I headed straight to Fangsheng Bridge from the guesthouse. Along the way, I passed by this small shop with a TV interview poster plastered at the entrance, assuming it must be good. But to my dismay, the tangyuan was terrible!
🏠Environment: Near the entrance, there's a glass window kitchen where you can see tangyuan and dumplings being made on the spot. The interior is not big, with simple and clean decor.
🤵🏻Service: Orders can be placed via QR Code/manual entry, no service charge added.
🍽️Lunch: Specializes in sweet and savory tangyuan and various dumplings.
🥟Small Dumplings ¥10
There's a generous portion, but it's not filling, and the taste is average.
🥟Shepherd's Purse Pork Dumplings ¥16
My friend's choice turned out to be quite good👍, with more vegetables than meat, fragrant and plump, consisting of ten large dumplings🥟, very satisfying!
🍡Fresh Meat Tangyuan ¥3.5/piece
They look big, but they're actually over-soaked🥲, causing the flour to swell and the outer layer to become soft and easily broken😖. The meat filling has a strange, off-putting smell🤯, it should be pork, but it has a smell similar to mutton, extremely unpalatable🤮!
🍡Sesame Tangyuan ¥3.5/piece
The same issue with the skin, the sesame filling is sweeter than aromatic, 😐average.
🥜Peanut Tangyuan ¥3.5/piece
My friends also found it to be just average🫣.
In short, these are overpriced, terrible tangyuan😡. I really don't know how they made it onto TV😩, they must have given out a lot of gifts💰!

Enjoy the sunset over a small bridge and flowing water, Xitang Ancient Town, a water town in the south of the Yangtze River
# sunset #100 ways to travel
Visit #Xitang, one of the six ancient water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. This thousand-year-old ancient town in Jiaxing, Zhejiang has a long history, pleasant scenery, small bridges, flowing water, and people. It is intertwined by 9 rivers and 20 bridges, making Xitang Ancient Town It is famous for its many bridges, lanes and corridors.
Watching the sunset in Xitang Ancient Town can be said to be a great enjoyment. If you choose the terrace of the inn beside the river, you can overlook the beautiful scenery of the setting sun setting over the small bridge and flowing water, dyeing the skyline golden and beautiful.
Xitang Ancient Town has many well-preserved ancient buildings and corridors. You can also experience staying in an ancient house near the river for one night to experience the life of the ancients, which is quite interesting. Private cars are prohibited from entering the scenic area, and the measures to separate people and vehicles are pretty good. There are more than a dozen scenic spots and cultural relics in the scenic area, and it would take two days and one night to see them all.
Xitang is even more charming at night, with small old houses by the river transformed into fashionable bars, super high! Xitang is the most beautiful time in the early morning. There are no noisy tourists, only quiet bridges and flowing water. It is like a paradise.
