#magicalxmastrip
During my visit to Sri Lanka, I had the incredible experience of exploring **Galle Fort**, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s rich in history and charm! 🇱🇰🌊
As I wandered through the fort’s well-preserved walls, I was captivated by the blend of European and South Asian architecture. The cobblestone streets are lined with charming cafes, boutique shops, and historic buildings, making it a delightful place to stroll. 🏛️❤️
One of the highlights was climbing up to the **Galle Lighthouse**, which offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The sight of the waves crashing against the fort's walls is simply breathtaking! 🌅🐚
Don’t miss the chance to explore the various museums and galleries within the fort, which showcase the rich maritime history of the area. If you’re a history buff or simply love beautiful landscapes, Galle Fort is a must-visit!

🇱🇰 Safari Ride through Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park, located in Sri Lanka’s north-central province, is home to hundreds of Asian elephants that thrive near the ancient Minneriya Tank, a reservoir constructed about 1,700 years ago. One of the best ways to experience the park’s rich wildlife and scenic beauty is by taking a safari jeep ride. We rented a jeep from Sigiriya and arrived at the park entrance within an hour. Our journey took us through forested areas until we reached the Minneriya Tank, where we saw herds of elephants and buffaloes by the water. The open-air jeep offered us an unobstructed view of the landscape and wildlife.

🇱🇰 Minneriya Tank
The Minneriya Tank is a remarkable ancient reservoir in Sri Lanka’s north-central province, near the town of Minneriya. Built around the 3rd century AD by King Mahasen, this reservoir was originally constructed to support agriculture in the region. It collects and stores rainwater from the surrounding hills during the monsoon season, providing essential water resources for farming and local communities throughout the year, even during dry spells.
In the dry season (July to October), the tank's receding water levels expose grassy plains, creating a lush feeding ground for wildlife, particularly Asian elephants. This unique ecosystem supports the annual “Gathering of Elephants,” a rare phenomenon where hundreds of elephants converge around the tank for water, food, and social interaction. The area also attracts a variety of other wildlife, including buffaloes, deer, and numerous bird species.

🇱🇰 Minneriya National Park Animal Watch Hut
During the safari jeep ride through Minneriya National Park, our driver-guide stopped at an animal watch hut, allowing us to climb up and get a bird's-eye view of the Minneriya Tank. There are several watch huts in the national park. These huts, also known as wildlife observation towers, are built to provide basic shelter and a safe observation point for visitors. They offer a peaceful and quieter way to observe animals, as the park's wildlife tends to be less disturbed by human presence from a distance.

🇱🇰 The Largest cave temple complex in Dambulla, Sri Lanka
Inscribed in 1991 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple in Sri Lanka is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the country. This sacred site, built into five caves beneath an overhanging rock, has been a place of pilgrimage for over 22 centuries. The Buddhist mural paintings and statues within the caves are truly sights to behold.
The cave temple is located on a hill, 20 km from Sigiriya. The entrance ticket costs 2,000 rupees per person and can only be purchased at the ticket counter at the foot of the hill. From there, we had to climb many flights of stairs to reach the temple entrance. The views of the surrounding area on the way up were spectacular.
Before entering the temple, we had to remove our shoes, so wearing socks is recommended. Remember to wear modest clothing that covers your knees and shoulders while visiting sacred sites. There are many street vendors outside the temple selling sarongs, and it is also possible to rent a sarong to cover your knees before entering the temple.

🇱🇰 Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites You Should Not Miss in Sri Lanka
The ancient city of Sigiriya and Dambulla cave temple are two of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka that you should not miss if you visit Sri Lanka. The two sites are just 20 km apart so it is possible to visit both attractions within the same day. However, I recommend spending at least a few days to explore these sites at a more leisurely pace. Check out the three-day itinerary below!
Day 1:
Arrive at Colombo International Airport Ratmalana. Rest for a night in Negombo.
Day 2:
Travel to Sigiriya. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple on the way to Sigiriya.
The most convenient way to reach Sigiriya is by hiring a private car. The cheapest way is by taking local buses. We took 2 different local buses from Negombo and got off at Dambulla. It was fun albeit slightly inconvenient as we got to experience it the local way. From Dambulla you can either take a public bus or hire a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya.
Day 3:
Visit Sigiriya Lion Rock early in the morning. Hire a jeep ride to Minneriya National Park in the afternoon.
[Must-Visit Attractions]
1. Sigiriya Lion Rock: An ancient fortress built on top of a rock column
2. Dambulla Cave Temple: The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island
3. Minneriya National Park: Within an hour drive from Sigiriya, the park houses hundreds of Asian elephants which thrive on the Minneriya Tank.
[Must-Try Food]
There are plenty of roadside restaurants along Sigiriya Road and Hotel Road. Some of them offer a good view of the Sigiriya Lion Rock.
1. Hotel Sigiriya serves good buffet dinner.
2. Sigiriya Wew Thawulla Restaurant offers amazing views of the Lion Rock.
3. Sigiriya Lion Face serves good kattu with a stunning view of Lion Rock as a backdrop.
[Accommodation ]
We stayed in Hotel Sigiriya 2 km away from the entrance of Sigiriya Lion Rock with amazing views of the Lion Rock from the outdoor pool area.
📍 Hotel Sigiriya
Hotel Road, Sigiriya, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
[Photo Spots]
1. Outdoor pool area of Hotel Sigiriya offers clear views of the Lion Rock. There is even a telescope by the pool for us to get a better view of the rock!
2. The journey to the top of the Lion Rock offers amazing views along the way.
3. Take pictures of the Lion Rock near the site entrance before the ascent to capture the full view of the rock.
[Tips]
1. Dambulla Cave Temple:
Before entering the temple we had to remove our shoes so wearing socks is recommended. Remember to wear modest clothing that covers your knee and shoulder while visiting sacred sites. There are lots of street sellers outside the temple selling sarong. It is also possible to rent a sarong to cover your knees before entering the temple.
2. Sigiriya Lion Rock:
Be prepared to have a workout while visiting the Lion Rock as there are around 1200 steps of stairs to climb throughout the visit. Wear comfortable shoes!

🇱🇰 A Must Do Hike in Ella, Little Adam's Peak
Named after the sacred mountain Adam's Peak, the 1141-metre Little Adam’s Peak is a pyramidal-shaped hill located in the tea country hill city, Ella, Sri Lanka. It is the most popular hiking spot in Ella due to its relatively easy climb and spectacular 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains from the peak.
The trailhead starts next to Ravana Pool Club located about 4 km to the south-east of Ella town centre. It can be easily reached by hiring a tuk-tuk. Our family took about 30 minutes to reach the peak. It is better to set out early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the scorching sun. We spent some time at the peak taking pictures while admiring the beauty of Ella.

A wonderful time in Kandy, Sri Lanka😍🥰
This is Kandy, Sri Lanka
Had a lovely stay at a brand new hotel The Trees, walked all around the city and lake, visited the Buddhist Temple of the Tooth, and soaked up time at the rooftop pool. Ended the day making new friends from London at Hideout Lounge and riding in my first Tuk Tuk! Beautiful and well maintained park definitely justified the ticket price. Worth a visit account at least 2 hours, could easily bring in some food (or buy some at the park cafe) and spend a whole day.
