M.O.T.A.S around the world Mongolian Yurts in Xilamuren Grassland 🇨🇳
#wecreate
Xilamuren Grassland is located id Baotou City. Approxinately 2-3 hours away from Hohhot. We were very excited to experiece sleeping in a traditional yurt for the first time but we were surprised when we arrived at our accommodation. It was a Deluxe Yurt, it was actually like a hotel room.
We really enjoyed their welcome party during the night, wr had traditional singing and dancing plus a roasted lamb or goat. Sorry there is no photo coz it was too dark to capture some. There were some horse riding activities with extra fee but you can enjoy watching a horce race and a traditional wresting. My husband who is 6'3 in height was easily thrown and pinned down by a 5'5 guy.
The grassland is so massive and the sunrise the next day is such a sight to behold.
Location: Daerhammao Ming Union Banner, Baotou City.
Enjoy your yurt and grassland experience.

Traditional Mongolian Power Breakfast
Muma Rennai Teahouse, in Ulanqab is a breakfast experience that is one of the best I have had, anywhere and I have been a lot of places around the world. The restaurant was filled and it is clear why this is the go to place to start the day. The spaces go up and around so don’t be discouraged by a crowd.
It is a traditional Mongolian breakfast, so like many other places there is a lot of lamb in many different forms and flavors. The centerpiece, figuratively and literally is the milk tea. It was assembled for us by a local friend so a lot happened quickly, but along with the milk and tea were several kinds of cheeses mixed in. The result is a wonderful slightly savory, lightly fragrant, rich warm milky broth.
Dishes served included the traditional spicy lamb breakfast stew, locally spiced tea eggs, and a vast array of breads, stuffed buns and the best fresh yogurt with a small drizzle of local honey. The buns included ones with mushrooms and local chopped greens and another roasted bun with chopped lamb.
I can easily imagine a time when a traveler would be riding off on horse( or camel) after an early breakfast with a n extra warm bun stuffed into some pockets for later. #cafe,#foodie ,#innermongolia , #ulanqab

🌵Kubuqi Desert in INNER MONGOLIA
This place is probably where I’ve had most fun in all of China! In this area of the Kubuqi Desert you will find 3 main things:
🛏 lodging
🍗 food
🏎 quads
and all of it is absolutely incredible, cost for benefit, entertaining, and relaxing at the same time. Let’s go by parts.
🛏 LODGING
Here there are some containers - yes, actual containers - that have been transformed into nice little rooms. These containers were a 10/10 and so much nicer than other hotels I had paid double the amount for in other cities in Inner Mongolia. The rooms were super clean and tidy, equipped with AC, had a ~huge~ and comfortable bed, nice sheets, an excellent shower with warm water, and even some basic toiletries. They also offered some snacks like instant noodles, cookies, and water for an extra charge. The curtains were black out, so we were able to sleep very well and wake up at a reasonable time the next day. Each night cost around ¥200.
🍗FOOD
A few meters ahead of the container rooms, there is a little central restaurant. I believe it’s family owned, so everyone around is super nice and tried to cater to all our needs. We pre-ordered a lamb leg (typical Inner Mongolia dish) in the afternoon and they would prepare it by dinner time. They had several options for side dishes and although some were out of stock, everything they served was delicious. Reasonable price for a great amount of food. And they also had Wi-Fi there!
🏎QUADS
The best part. You can rent the quads by the hour, but since it was quiet and we were pretty much the only laowais there, the owners were super relaxed about time and just let us have our fun. The reason this was the best part is because as soon as we got on them and asked how far we could go, the owner just said “whatever, have fun”! We were able to drive around the ~huge~ desert area and explore all the hills! It was truly an unforgettable experience and so worth every rmb!
🌟 This is also where I’ve seen the most beautiful, starry night sky in China. It took my breath away and it was refreshing to just take some minutes to lay on the cold sand and observe the sky.
#thisischina #desert #innermongolia
🌳Eergu’Na Wetlands in INNER MONGOLIA
While visiting Inner Mongolia, you have the chance to experience China’s biggest wetland area in Erguna. It is also, like pretty much everything else in China, the first known wetland in Asia.
This area is a National Park and has great infrastructure all the way around. At the entry and exit point, you will find yourself surrounded by little gift and snack shops, but they are a bit more pricey since it’s a tourist area.
With a large and well built boardwalk, you can go from one side to the other, and also go down the hill a bit into the wetlands. However, you cannot actually reach any parts of the river. From the top, the contrasting view between the city and vast green landscape makes for great pictures, and complement the scenery in a beautiful way.
At the end of the boardwalk, you will find a small museum which displays the multiple flora and fauna found in the wetlands. Some parts are interactive, so it’ll be a great break for the kids! There is also an exclusive gift shop inside with plush animals and other unique items from Inner Mongolia.
📍Erguna City
🎟 ¥65
🚌 ¥15 (but everywhere is completely walkable)
#thisischina #wetlands #innermongolia
🌋 Volcano Geopark in INNER MONGOLIA
Covering an area of about 65km, these amazing volcanoes can be found during your trip to Inner Mongolia. Visiting the Wulanhada Geopark is completely free and you can choose to walk around the volcanoes or drive to several of them throughout the day (recommended).
More than 30 volcanoes here are distributed like a string of beads on the grassland, and the flat terrain shows off the shape of the volcanoes perfectly. Because of its unique volcanic geology and landform, this unique "volcanic grassland", is known as the "natural volcano museum", and definitely worth a visit.
But out of the 30, there are 8 main volcanoes to see and climb. are arranged from northeast to southwest respectively, with a total distance of about 10 kilometers. The big ones are Volcano No.3️⃣ to Volcano No.8️⃣. The No.3 Volcano is half mined, and the whole volcano shows a huge gap, with a plank road to the volcano top; The No.4 Volcano was thoroughly excavated and a volcano museum was built on the original site; The No.5 Volcano is the most complete one, with a perfectly preserved central eruption volcanic shape. The slope of the No.6 Volcano was all hollowed out, leaving only a core in the middle. The No.7 and No.8 volcanoes are cone-shaped.
💥BONUS: pretend you’re in Mars!
Yeap, just like my cover picture shows, Chinese had the amazing business idea to set up several trucks that provide astronaut suits 👩🚀 for rental! It costs ¥80 for an hour, but you can haggle the price (I paid 50). You can also have professional photographers take your picture there and they can give you smoke bombs to hold 😂 it’s really quite a hilarious scene, but a fun, unique, and tacky experience that you will only get in China!
📝 Sidenote: don’t let the pictures fool you. The climbs to the top of the volcanoes are *intense*. Somer are very steep on the way up and super slippery on the way down. Definitely a challenge!

Would you rather ride a Horse or a Camel?
Would you rather sleep inside a modern Yurt or camp in a desert?
Why not do all of them?
Ride a horse, ride a camel, stay in a yurt (with hot shower), camp in a desert, and experience a totally different side of China in Inner Mongolia!
Inner Mongolia 内蒙古, Nèi Měnggǔ or in Mongolian: Öbür mongɣul, is a Mongol Autonomous Region in northern China, whereas Outer Mongolia is a separate country to the north of China.
We visited the Xilamuren grassland, Kubuqi desert, and I extended the trip to stay overnight in Hohhot -a surprisingly VERY modern and thriving city (they have large malls and shared-scooter, not bike!)
Be ready for some long bus ride during the trip, the area is huge! We were only visiting a tiny bit of Inner Mongolia, the birthplace of Genghis Khan. There are definitely a LOT more to see.
I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
Tips: for best experience (with clear starry sky night during your desert camp), plan your trip when in non-rainy months! Oh, and get ready to be a cat during your camp in the desert. Just gotta say, it’s a giant litter-box, if you know what I meant.
Getting There - take a flight to Hohhot and take a connecting bus ride to the grassland / desert area.
Attractions - Mongolian Yurt, Mongolian horse ride, Desert camping, and lots of fun!
Hotels - Hohhot has a lot of modern hotels, but obviously you’ll need to find those Yurt hotels.
Food & Restaurants - Mongolian foods typically very meaty: lamb, beef, and its produce: milk, yogurt, cheese; and also hotpot! (warning: their milk tea is salty; need to ask for sweet version).
Shopping - Traditional trinkets & souvenirs.
Vegan Friendliness - can be requested in a typical Chinese foods restaurant, but not so much in the traditional Yurt’s Zhama Banquet dinner.

Volcanoes at sunrise in Inner Mongolia
Woke up at 2am to drive out for hours to find these volcanoes in Inner Mongolia.

Ulanqab - 10/10 a scroll-stopping destination
Ulanqabu is a small city a short train ride east of Hohhot - Inner Mongolia’s capital. Safe to say, it’s not the most interesting of places - but it is the gateway to one.
Rent a car and drive a couple of hours north and you’ll be faced with a national park full of volcanoes you can climb around on and horses to run around and observe - the perfect spot for an outdoor adventure.
10/10 recommend the early wake up call to be here at sunrise - the place lights up and there’s very little better.
That said, wrap up warm as it can get more than a wee bit chilly during the winter months and it can snow all the way up to May.
