Explore These Gems Outside Taipei
#voyagevibes
Going out of Taipei, Taiwan still has a lot to offer. There's more of nature attractions, unique activities and whimsical places to visit. My friends and I opted to do a DIY tour outside Taipei. We rode a very adventurous crowded public bus and trains. We visiter Taiwan on a November and even though there's a bit of rain, we still pushed through with our plans. We visited the majestic Shifen Waterfalls. There are lots of viewpoints and food options scattered around the waterfalls. Be sure to bring jackets when visiting as it's cold due to the weather and the splash coming from the falls. Another activity we did was to light sky lanterns along the train tracks. We also ate xiao long bao and noodles here. We then proceeded to go see A-Mei Tea House which inspired the Studio Ghibli film, Spirited Away. The tea house was so pretty. It feels magical with all the lanterns lighted up around the area and on the building. The place is super crowded though, take note. It also doesn't help that it's still drizzling. We tried the peanut ice cream roll here. We were also able to dine in the tea house itself and get tea as it was really very cold. Our ride back to Taipei is a bus which we were able to catch by queueing. It was overall a memorable experience. Will come back again.

Then at night, can visit Raohe St. Night Market, which is the oldest and unique night market for good food.
Day 4: Is Tamsui district day. Is a very relax walk by the famous Fisherman’s Wharf harbour. Enjoy some local delicacies, shopping for souvenirs and enjoy your walk along the riverbanks. At night can go to Ningxia night market for food.
Day 5: the last day if your flight at evening or night, you can do some final shopping at WuFenPu near the city. Is a fashion clothes wholesale area where you can do some fashion shopping with good price. JIUFEN🏮 Red Lantern Village, a popular ancient city in Taiwan
Anyone who plans to visit Taiwan🇼🇸 We would like to recommend a place that you should definitely visit. This is “Jiufen Old Street”. Anyone who visits Taiwan must not miss this place.
Jiufen is a small ancient town located on Keelung Mountain, not far from Taipei City. We traveled by bus. The highlight here is the red lanterns that are decorated. This place is also a location in the Ghibli animation Spirited Away. To be honest, one of the reasons we wanted to come here is because we wanted to follow in the footsteps of this cartoon.🤭
🍢Jiufen has many shops, restaurants, and street food to choose from.
🌦The weather here often encounters fog and rain. Some days the forecast is sunny, some days are extremely cloudy. You have to take a gamble when visiting here. When you come here, we recommend bringing an umbrella and a raincoat.☔️
🏮The most beautiful time is from the evening onwards because all the shops will turn on the red lanterns together. Beautifully lit, it feels like you're in the Spirited Away animation. 📸 Secret corner! Start from 7Eleven at the entrance of the alley, walk along the winding path until you reach the intersection, turn right a little bit more, you will see A Mei Tea House. We have to stand on the teahouse on the opposite side to take beautiful pictures.

a town that inspired Spirited Away 🎥🏮
I went to Taipei earlier this summer and didn’t want to just stay within Taipei City, so I decided to hire a driver to drive us around the outskirts of Taipei, and Jiufen is the third stop.
Jiufen is up on a hill so there’s quite a bit of stairs and slope. The movie Spirited Away was inspired by Jiufen so a lot of souvenir shops sell Spirited Away merchandise, it is definitely worth a visit if you are a fan.
Jiufen is not difficult to manoeuvre as it is just one main street. We went for the taro balls soup at 阿柑姨 (see last pic) as recommended by the driver and it did not disappoint!! (the driver said this is the only place she would go for taro ball haaha)

Jiufen Old Street with pretty sunset 🌅
Situated in the county of Rueifang, Jiufen is seated in the mid valley.. take the shuttle bus from rueifang train station or a taxi up. Journey takes about 45mins.
It will be a good choice to visit this place after taking a light lunch as you will be able to fit in more snacks from the shops along the way.. best timing is to come at around 2~3pm.. the streets will take about an hour or two to roam (of course depends on your shopping pace) 🤭🤭
After all the foods n shopping, head down to the viewing gallery (or midway viewing spot) for the Sunset. Can check out the sunset timing using your weather app , it’s quite accurate
If you intend to take the public transport, pls take note of the last bus departure timing as it differs during peak and off peak times

A Stairway to Taiwan's Past and Prese
Perched on the slopes of lush mountains in northern Taiwan, Jiufen is a picturesque village that seems to be plucked from the pages of a storybook. With its narrow alleyways, charming tea houses, and stunning vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Jiufen is a treasure trove of beauty and nostalgia that captivates all who visit.
Step into Jiufen's labyrinthine streets and you'll find yourself transported back in time. The village's cobblestone pathways wind through traditional buildings adorned with red lanterns and intricate woodwork, creating an atmosphere of old-world charm. As you stroll through the bustling lanes, you'll encounter shops selling local crafts, art, and the region's famous handmade Taro Balls - a delicious treat that tantalizes the taste buds.
Jiufen's tea houses are a gateway to both relaxation and panoramic views. Sip on freshly brewed oolong tea while gazing out over the mountains and the ocean beyond, allowing the tranquility of the surroundings to wash over you. The view becomes especially enchanting as the sun sets, painting the sky with shades of pink and gold, and the village lights begin to twinkle.
The heart of Jiufen lies in its historic alleys, especially Jiufen Old Street. This bustling marketplace is a sensory delight, where the aroma of street food fills the air. Indulge in local delicacies like fishball soup, herbal pork stew, and savory taro cakes as you explore the myriad of stalls and eateries. At night, the street takes on a magical glow as traditional red lanterns illuminate the way, creating an ambiance that transports you to another era.
Jiufen's most iconic spot is undoubtedly the A-Ma Temple, perched on a hilltop overlooking the village. Dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, this temple exudes an air of serenity and offers stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape and the vast Pacific Ocean. It's a place of quiet reflection, where visitors can pay their respects or simply soak in the beauty of the natural surroundings.
For those seeking a touch of cinematic nostalgia, Jiufen's charm was immortalized in the acclaimed animated film "Spirited Away" by Hayao Miyazaki. Certain elements of the village bear an uncanny resemblance to scenes from the movie, adding an extra layer of enchantment for fans.
Jiufen's allure lies in its ability to transport visitors to a simpler time, where the pace is slow and the beauty is abundant. It's a place to immerse yourself in a blend of culture, history, and natural splendor, leaving you with a sense of wonder and a yearning to return to its timeless embrace. #jiufen #spiritedaway #trip #tea #teahouse #lanterns

Jiufen - 老街
Jiufen is the place to drop by when you going to Shifen to put up sky lantern. We took a bus (965) from 中山北路站 and it takes about an hour and it reaches directly at Jiufen old street.
Jiufen Old Street is a narrow alleyway which have plenty of small food stalls, souvenir shops, and taro dessert and tea houses. You can just explore follow the alleyway to enjoy the upslope walk.
Enjoy a lunch such as Lu Rou Fan, visiting a tea house and enjoy the tea for awhile, and eat the pork sausage while waking around. After which, can stop over at 赖阿婆to have some taro ball soup which is famous in Jiufen. They are made on the spot and they are made in a chewy texture that is likeable by all age. You can choose to have it hot or cold (serve with red and green beans together). It’s a definite must try!
If you are like us that runs out of money in our bus card you can find 7-11 right outside the street.
If you would like to further explore you can continue to take 965 to 金瓜石 or return to Taipei directly via bus 1062 or Ruifang to further explore Shifen.
If you want, there’s also a few guest house that you can stay at to slowly explore the area. #jiufen

Many of you who are looking to make jiufen as your to go to destination in Taiwan and especially if you are driving, parking here is impossible to find in the heart of jiufen unless you go to one of the parking vicinities by the locals where they will charge you quite a high price of about 200 - 300TWD. I recommend to head to the top of Jiufen for free parking or one of the temples here.
Why is Jiufen so popular, simply because this is a shopping and food heaven for all, with the many stall vendors in narrow streets, at different levels of the hilly terrain, you will see endless of these stalls all around you! There are a few popular must try food here loke the grandma taro balls and the teahouses here where you be able to catch a glimpse from above the hilly terrain and a view towards the shores. The entire area is also filled with many old shophouses making this a very authentic traditional feel.
I recommend to head here especially with a clear weather, as the weather here changes quite fast, ensure you check it before heading up here. Because on a clear day the view here us amazing!

But fret not these room have individual toilets and private rooms and comfy beds. If you book the room with ocean view you will be able to see the ocean on a clear mountain day.
Parking wise here in Jiufen can be abit tough unless you are okay to park at the too of the mountain where it provides free parking but it can be abit of a climb.
Jiufen is a place you have to go at least once, and do remember to boon you hotels early as it can get fully booked out.
Jiufen Ah Gan Yi Taro Balls
This is the best Taro Balls dessert I have ever had so far. At first I ordered a hot one, it tasted amazingly delicious. The soup was red and green bean soup with chewy purple and orange colour balls. After a walk, I came back again for a second bowl. This time I had a cold one. Both are equally delicious. All the taro balls and sweet potato balls are handmade in the shop. I got a seat next to the window, it was so relaxing admiring the greenery mountain view and beautiful skyline. You have to walk all the way up to reach this cafe. It is usually crowded with tourists. Service was fast.

Must Eat Food at JiuFen Old Street Taiwan
JiuFen is a popular attraction in Taipei. It is located on top of a mountain with a scenic view. There are a lot of yummy Taiwanese street foods. Some of my favourites include yam and sweet potato balls dessert, deep fried king mushrooms, Bak Wan (meat ball with chewy glutinous rice skin topped with thick sauce), assorted Kueh resembled Nyonya Kueh in Singapore and Malaysia. In order to get there, you would need to take the train from Taipei Main Station to Ruifang Station, and then the bus from Ruifang Station to Jiufen. The whole journey will take about 1 hour.

Exploring Jiufen
Situated in a small mountain region, Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Jiufen is an old village that still retains its own charm.
It is said that Jiufen used to be a village with nine families during the Qing Dynasty and would request for 9 portions (jiu fen in Chinese) of shipment every time and that’s how its name came about. It subsequently became a gold mining town, ended up shutting off in 1971 when mining declined after World War II.
It has since flourished to become a must-visit tourist attraction with its preserved narrow alleyways, stairs and teashops.
Although we were driven to Jiufen by a friend, getting there via public transport shouldn’t be a quite difficult with a direct bus 1062 from Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT outside Sogo department store.

Jiufen old street (Taiwan)
Took a day trip using klook to visit the must visit location of jiufen & shifen!
As we went during April, it was supposed to be quite chilly, however, we actually face 35 deg celcius temperature almost everyday in taiwan during the week of visit.
So when visiting jiufen, please bring along a jacket as it had nice chilly weather up there for us to escape the heat. Jiufen is quite popular with its beef noodle & icecream popiah that’s filled with vanilla icecream & peanuts!
there’s so much to do at jiufen i think you can spend a comfortable 4-5 hours there, either for tea or for food, or for the culture experience.

Charming Mountain Town -Jiufen by day I☀️🏔
While researching about places to visit in Taiwan, I stumbled upon many pictures of Jiufen and its popular old street. I was instantly hooked and made it a must to visit despite of several warnings from my local friend about how touristy and crowded Jiufen is. Do I regret going there? ABSOLUTELY NOT 🤗
The town is located east of Taipei and was a former gold mining hub during the Japanese era. It consists of narrow alleyways with shops, restaurants, street food and cafés. I spotted this nice artsy café with a view: Jiufen Impressions. The owner and his son were very accommodating and kind to make me another cup of coffee (at no extra cost despite of me insisting) after I spilled the first one on myself while trying to take a picture 🙈
The end of the main old street offers stunning views of the mountains and the ocean! 😍🏔🌊✨
Recommendations 👇🏼
1. Wear comfortable trainers as you’ll be climbing narrow and steep stairs. (I was wearing shoes with thick soles and almost fell. I had knee pain the next day but nothing serious fortunately)
2. I went mid-January and it was pretty cold up there 😬 It was also raining earlier! Make sure to wear a jacket and carry an umbrella!
How to go ➡️ I took a bus that goes directly to Jiufen from Taipei after checking the route from my hotel on Google map. It takes about an hour. There’s a bus station there , so I took the same bus to go back to the city. Cheap and convenient ✌🏼Bus views were also incredible!

Jiufen, Taiwan, is a charming destination that feels like stepping into a different world. Nestled in the mountains with breathtaking views of the coastline, it’s no wonder this little town is a favorite among travelers. During my visit, it was packed with visitors, creating a lively yet slightly crowded atmosphere. The drizzle of rain added a moody, almost cinematic touch to the already picturesque setting.#jiufen
Walking through Jiufen’s narrow, winding alleys was a feast for the senses. The street food scene is fantastic, offering a wide variety of must-try bites like taro balls, stinky tofu, and grilled mochi. Every corner had something delicious to discover, and the rich aroma of local snacks made it impossible not to indulge.
One of the highlights of the trip was enjoying a traditional tea session while overlooking the stunning scenery. The experience of sipping hot tea in a teahouse with panoramic views of the mountains and sea was absolutely unforgettable—a perfect way to slow down and take in the beauty of Jiufen.
Although it was a bit crowded, the charm of the town, the incredible food, and the serene tea experience made the trip entirely worth it. Jiufen is truly a gem, blending history, culture, and scenery into one unforgettable experience.
Enjoy Jiufen!

I really enjoyed the unique atmosphere and the local food here.
There was very crowded in the evening.
Although I occasionally struggled with the smell of the stinky tofu, it was no problem.
I highly recommend you to come here when you visit Taiwan.

A place full of food and nice scenery. It is a must to try their yam ball dessert and this fish cake shop. Was very crowded during noon time. Not to forget to enjoy the nice scenery up here.
