Small bridges, flowing water, and people’s houses, the six ancient water towns in the south of the Yangtze River: Wuzhen
#2024Travel Review
Small bridges, flowing water, and people are the best portrayal of the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. Among them, the six ancient towns are the most famous. This time we visited #Wuzhen, which is located in the center. It is only a 50-minute drive from Hangzhou and is considered the most convenient water town. ancient town.
Wuzhen was built along the river. Although it has been over a hundred years, it still retains the complete style of the ancient town. The unique attic near the water reveals a simple and ancient charm. Wuzhen has well-developed waterways, with four streets in the southeast, northwest and northwest crisscrossing each other and adjacent to the waterways in a checkerboard pattern, extending in all directions.
#XizhaOld Street in the west of Wuzhen is also the focus of a stroll. It has one of the most complete architectural complexes of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are also special attractions in Wuzhen such as the Cultivation Viewing Stage, Liangyuan Scenic Spots, and Shuangqiao Customs. You can spend a whole day shopping there. Don't feel bored.
When visiting Wuzhen, it is best to stay for one night in order to appreciate the original tranquility of the ancient town after the hustle and bustle. As for the must-try delicacies, local merchants recommend the braised mutton and Wuzhen sauce chicken, which are guaranteed to make your mouth full!

I thought Wuzhen was beautiful, until I went to Puyuan Ancient Town.
Puyuan Ancient Town is really amazing‼️ It completely fulfilled all my fantasies about ancient towns, and it's no worse than Wuzhen.
🍀 Green bricks and black tiles, small bridges and flowing water, the coexistence of Jiangnan style and the Republic of China style, the area is more than twice that of Ubud Town.
🍀 Quiet and leisurely, compared with the bustling Wuzhen, it is more comfortable to visit, and the photos are super good.
🍀 Different from Wuzhen, Puyuan is similar to an ancient town resort, and there are no aborigines in the scenic area.
🔥 Tourist attractions:
Beigeng Building
Puyuan Chamber of Commerce
Yue Family Courtyard
Shufang Zen Garden
Fushan Temple
Siwan Street
Tickets: Adults 120

But it has the ubiquitous charm of Jiangnan
The simple and leisurely life in the water town
A boat slowly paddles through the green river between the blue bricks and black tiles

I originally thought Wuzhen was already beautiful enough, until I came to Tongxiang
I originally thought Wuzhen was already beautiful enough, until I came to Tongxiang.||Heading to the ancient town, embarking on a rendezvous with the south of the Yangtze River.
The ancient town has been renovated and repaired on its original site for nine years. It mainly presents the architectural style of the Southern Song Dynasty. There is no noise brought by crowded crowds, but an ancient charm that lingers.
Zen Hall: Located in the middle of the water in front of the Fushan Pagoda. Fushan Temple: Inside the temple, there are two ginkgo trees that are nearly 900 years old. Fushan Pagoda: The newly built nine-story pagoda offers an excellent view from the top. Beigeng Building: Climbing up, one can overlook the ancient town's layered grey tile roofs. Puyang Guild Hall: An exhibition hall for understanding the history of Puyang. Shuangfang Zen Garden: A combination of a teahouse and a theater.
You can also experience rowing a boat, with boat rides available at the service center pier and Puyang Shilang pier. Boat tickets are 60 yuan per person, for about 25 minutes.
Departing from Hangzhou, it took 1 h to find a beautiful ancient town with few people and great scenery
Many ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River have been visited,
Most of them are quite similar,
Yet I have never seen such an ancient town with Tang and Song dynasties' style,
Its grandeur is more imposing,
The scenery is extremely beautiful,
This is —— "Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town"
The 60 yuan ticket is really worth crying for 😭
.
📸About photo-taking and check-ins
1️⃣ Shangfang Zen Garden
Definitely the number one must-visit spot in Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town 🥇 The Song-style pavilions and towers, coupled with the sunset, are so beautiful that it's out of this world~ Inside, there's also a newly opened flower arrangement gallery and Gengshi Studio, where you can experience the elegance of the Song people!
2️⃣ Puyuan Chamber of Commerce
It can be called the soul of Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town, where not only can you admire the 'finest silk in the world' known as Puyuan silk, but the gold and silver coins left by generations of Puyuan merchants are also an eye-opener! In addition, a special T-stage catwalk tunnel has been designed, which is super photogenic!
3️⃣ Fushan Temple
Inside the temple, the Thousand Buddha Pavilion, the Mahavira Hall, and the Bell and Drum Towers stand tall and majestic! There are also two nearly nine hundred-year-old ginkgo trees, super looking forward to the time when the leaves turn yellow~
4️⃣ Little Bridges and Flowing Water
There are super many small bridges and waterways in the ancient town, so take the time to find some beautiful angles, I'm dazzled by all the photos I took! The scene of boats cruising in the river is just too comfortable!
.
❇️Tips
🏨About accommodation

It includes tickets and double breakfast, and you can enjoy services such as free luggage transfer, free shuttle bus rides, etc. There are both 3 upscale hotels and more than a dozen down-to-earth inns in the ancient town, like Siyanjing Inn and Beilangpeng Inn, which both have the atmosphere of a Jiangnan courtyard~
.

📣Who doesn't say Jiangnan is good, don't miss the windy🌬️ Wuzhen this summer anymore. Save the Jiangnan🍃🍃 and experience the unique summer life of the ancient canal town once🌴
Wuzhen, a place like a dreamy fantasy
With each step taken in the gentle glow, history echoes beneath your feet.
A poetic dwelling, is also a serene glance back, Wuzhen in summer, is a wordless prose poem.
Wuzhen, the water town! Always fresh with every visit! This time I flew 1000 kilometers specifically to spend the summer in Wuzhen!
For a bowl of scholar's lamb noodles, and for the fun and beautiful summer activities in Wuzhen.
Drinking tea beside the old street, splashing water and playing in the water lanes,
Eating a meal to cool off under the sunset while enjoying the evening breeze by the canal,
Even watching a play in the courtyard of an old house at night to catch the cool breeze!
It's completely a brand new experience!
Not only that, but you also shouldn't miss the night tour of the Mu Xin Art Museum and the former residences of celebrities in Wuzhen East Gate!
The tall pole boat is very exciting! Such a treasure of a town is worth traveling far for once!
Wuzhen: With the phrase 'Spring is not late,' I have arrived at the true Jiangnan
May in Jiangnan is filled with misty rain🌧️
You watch the scenery under the bridge, while I watch you from above.
The paulownia flowers in Wuzhen bloom this season
The trees are covered with white blossoms, devoid of leaves🍃
The branches stretch over the river, reflecting a springtime scene🌸
Wuzhen is divided into four districts: east, south, west, and north.
The west and east districts are larger in area, with the most attractions. Since the scenic area is under unified management, within the same type of street in the scenic area, you won't find a second store of the same kind, ensuring a worry-free and enjoyable visit to the shops and area~
The south and north districts are mostly inhabited by locals, free of charge, but relatively small. The private home-style dishes in the south district are quite good.
The weather today is so-so, with occasional showers🌦️
But Wuzhen in the rain has a unique charm
White walls and black tiles, misty and hazy
It's the Jiangnan from the Song Dynasty that I once read about in books
In the off-season, Wuzhen has only a few scattered tourists
It's like having this poetic water town atmosphere all to oneself
Comfortable, leisurely, healing, and soothing❤️
Jiangnan in May is truly divine, offering a travel guide that avoids the crowds

Savor the poetic and romantic atmosphere within the white walls and black tiles
The Wuzhen Good Life Festival kicks off in April, and I have put together a super detailed guide, questions welcome~
🍃【Overview of the Scenic Area】
Wuzhen is divided into two scenic areas: the East Zone and the West Zone. You can visit the West Zone first as it has more check-in spots and is more photogenic
🍃【Wuzhen Good Life Festival 2-Day 1-Night Spring Outing Itinerary】
𝐃𝐚𝐲𝟏: Arrive in Wuzhen➠Water Market➠Ling Shui Residence➠Dragon-shaped Field➠Zhao Ming Academy➠Stay overnight in Wuzhen
𝐃𝐚𝐲𝟐: Wucun Village➠West Zone Street➠Sun and Moon Square➠Return trip
🍃【6 Must-Visit Places in Wuzhen During Spring】
❶ Water Market (9:00-12:00)
The spring water market turns into a limited-time Republic of China-themed block, with newspaper boys, nostalgic information stations, and street old music, instantly taking me back to the romantic Republic of China era
❷ West Zone Street (10:00-15:00)
In April, there will be a non-heritage carnival parade on water and land, and white boat racing, where you can feel the rich traditional culture. You can watch the river and take photos right on the street, very photogenic
❸ Grass and Wood Dye Workshop (14:00-15:30)
When the wind lifts the dyed cloths, I feel the beauty brought by the inheritance of folk crafts. In the afternoon, the situational drama 'Stories of the Dye Workshop' is also performed here, quite interesting
❹ Dragon-shaped Field (13:00-17:00)
How can you miss the golden rapeseed flowers when stepping into spring? The rapeseed fields form the majestic posture of a dragon, and next to the Dragon-shaped Field, you can experience Song Dynasty-style elegant activities like flower hairpin making at the Listening Wind Pavilion
❺ Zhao Ming Academy (17:00-21:00)
As the lights come on, enjoy elegant music and poetry duels at the Hua Zhao Spring Night Gathering. When night falls, the atmosphere is full of Song Dynasty charm, as if I had a dream of traveling through a thousand years
❻ Wucun Village (9:00-16:00)
Wucun Village is definitely a treasure not to be missed! In spring, breathe fresh air in the endless fields, stroll through the market, experience various activities, and get close to nature
🍃【Accommodation and Food】
❶ I must say that Wuzhen is really too big to be explored in one day, so I suggest staying overnight before returning. Recommended: Jintang Inn, located in the middle of West Zone Street, convenient for getting around
❷ Beautiful scenery with delicious food, at noon I went with friends to the Silkworm Flower Happy Spring Banquet, sitting by the river tasting the refreshing classic delicacies of Wuzhen's spring, watching the boats pass by the river, super enjoyable
Wuzhen during the off-season on a clear day is truly the best
I was lucky to encounter a beautiful sunny day in the spring, and since March is the off-season, there weren't many tourists, which made for a great experience. Here are some tips:
🧚🏻♀️Transportation
The most convenient way is to take a taxi from Tongxiang high-speed train station🚄, which takes about 45 minutes and costs 50-70 yuan.
🧚🏻♀️Accommodation
The food and lodging in Wuzhen are uniformly managed, so there's no need to worry about being overcharged. I recommend staying in the scenic area. I booked a double package for 699 yuan on Ctrip, which included one night in a waterside B&B, tickets to the Xizha scenic area, an electric car in the scenic area, and experiences like Hanfu dress-up, among other things.
You can follow the official Wuzhen tourism booking for more options.
Another advantage of staying inside is that your luggage can be delivered directly to your room, and when you leave, they can also transport it to the visitor center at the entrance for you. The service is very thoughtful.
🧚🏻♀️Other
The mini-program 'Wuzhen Tourism Service' contains all the maps of attractions and food. Just navigate according to your preferences. There are also fixed activities and performances, such as flower drum opera, Pingtan, shadow play, tea art, etc. The times and locations are clearly written there. Personally, I think you can spend a day and a night in Xizha without rushing.
🧚🏻♀️Coffee
The most recommended is 'Ling Shui Man Bar'. The view by the window is amazing, and the coffee is very good.
🧚🏻♀️Morning Tea Guest
This is a local breakfast unique to the area, seemingly only available to those staying in the scenic area. There are only over 300 free spots per day (we booked too late and missed out, so be sure to reserve a day in advance, or you can also pay for it). It ends before 9:30 am.
😇In summary, the facilities and services throughout the scenic area are very comprehensive, and the prices are not exorbitantly high as in some tourist areas. You can truly relax and enjoy good food, drinks, and accommodation. The service staff inside are all very friendly. I really like the gentle and polite way people from Jiangsu and Zhejiang speak. The overall facilities and management can be said to be the ceiling of Chinese ancient towns, right?!!
Misty rain enters the south of the Yangtze River, and the landscape is like ink painting; Wuzhen welcomes everyone to check in
Wuzhen is definitely one of the best. With white walls and gray tiles, small bridges and flowing water, you can experience the tranquil life of a real water town.
Location: Tongxiang, Jiaxing, Zhejiang
Transportation guide: High-speed train: Take the high-speed train to Tongxiang Station, transfer to bus K282/K281 to Wuzhen Bus Station, and then take bus 350 to Xizha Scenic Area
Airplane: Take a plane to Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport, there is a direct bus to Wuzhen
Tour route: Wuzhen Theatre → Mu Xin Art Museum ~ Plant Dyeing Workshop → Shuichikou Market → Jiazu Bookstore → Dingsheng Bridge Zhao Ming Academy → Wuzhen Post Office ~ Water Theatre → White Lotus Pagoda → Matchmaker Temple
Check-in spots: 1 Wuzhen Old Street
Choose a misty morning, walk on the bluestone-paved old street, feel the simplicity and tranquility of the ancient town, walk along the river, or take a boat, the scenery along the way is worth stopping and cherishing.
2 Mu Xin Art Museum
'In the past, carriages were slow, and one's life was only enough to love one person' Having read many of Mu Xin's poems, you must come to see his paintings and literary manuscripts!
3 Waterfront Morning Tea
Sit by the water and listen to music, or sway in a boat, experience the unique morning tea of the Jiangnan water town, it's truly a different flavor.
4 Wuzhen Grand Theatre
Like a beautiful lotus flower blooming on the shore of Yuanbao Lake in Wuzhen, it's very photogenic, with the beauty of neat architecture.
5 Zhao Ming Academy
A relic of the Six Dynasties, it was the academy where the crown prince of the Liang Dynasty, Xiao Tong, studied. Be sure to have a friend help you take a photo by the window, under the carved window lattices, it sets off a scholarly aura.
6 Dingsheng Bridge
The tallest bridge among the seventy-two bridges in Wuzhen
7 White Lotus Pagoda
It is the highest point in the scenic area, from where you can have a panoramic view of the Grand Canal and Wuzhen
8 Plant Dyeing Workshop
The large drying field of the dyeing workshop is paved with green bricks, with densely packed poles and step-like cloth racks standing on the ground, the scale is quite large, rows of printed fabrics fluttering in the wind
Personal suggestions:
If you want to rent Hanfu, it is recommended to rent around the scenic area, with more styles and cheaper prices
Accommodation: It is recommended to stay within the scenic area, so you can go to the water market for morning tea the next day
Food: Dingsheng cake, Wuzhen duck leg, dried vegetable baked bun, etc.
I prefer this lesser-known and less popular ancient town over Wuzhen
I love the ancient town🏯
I love the ancient human fireworks♨️
Every alley and every tile bears the long history
I have been to many ancient towns in Zhejiang
The one that left the deepest impression on me is the Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town in Jiaxing🏯
Here, it's not as crowded as Wuzhen
But it has more beautiful Jiangnan water town scenery than Wuzhen🍃🍃🍃

6️⃣Walk along🚶🏻♂️ Taiping Lane, when the sun sets🌇, the alleys of the ancient town become more serene and peaceful.
The entire scenic area of Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town is filled with antique buildings. It's great to visit and take photos in Hanfu! The area is quite large, so it's recommended to stay overnight to better experience the night atmosphere of the ancient town. This time I stayed at the Puyuan Meishang Resort Hotel, which had a very nice environment, and both dinner and breakfast were exquisite.
I apologize to Puyuan Ancient Town for being too loud before
I knew a few years ago that a similar ancient town was being planned next to Wuzhen, and at that time I just thought, 'Why another fake ancient town, and right next to Wuzhen, can this even work?' After six years of development, with an area three times larger than Wuzhen and an investment of 7.1 billion yuan, Puyuan Ancient Town has been in trial operation for a while, and it seems to have a good reputation. Despite my skepticism, as an ancient town enthusiast, I couldn't help but take my parents to visit. After touring the town, I must say, it is the most complete of all the new Jiangnan ancient towns I have visited, and it's not at all inferior to Wuzhen, far exceeding my expectations!
I thought it was an artificial ancient town with no historical foundation, but after learning more, I found out that its history dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty when Emperor Gaozong fled south. At that time, this place was just a rural market called Youhu. The scholar Pufeng moved here after being appointed as the Deputy Marshal to Lin'an, and it became the permanent residence of the Pu family. During the reign of Emperor Lizong of Song, Pufeng's sixth-generation descendant, Pudou, was appointed as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Personnel, and his residence was granted the name 'Puyuan', which is how the ancient town got its name. Since then, Puyuan has been known for its scholarly atmosphere and strong cultural environment. The convergence of merchants also brought economic prosperity to the ancient town, especially the silk industry, which was once known as 'the number one silk in the world' and was listed as one of the five major market towns in Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today's Puyuan Ancient Town is based on the 'Puyuan Town Chronicles' and deeply crafted with 'Pu Shilang' as the cultural thread. Stepping into the ancient town, you are immediately surrounded by the charm of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the envisioned 'grand town of Jiahe' is fully materialized.
Although I knew that the designer of Puyuan was Chen Xianghong, the same designer of Wuzhen, I was still shocked by the details here. He understands Jiangnan and Tongxiang so well, finding a balance between poetry and the mundane in everything from architecture to culture. At first glance, it has the appearance of Wuzhen, with Song-style architecture as the main feature of the houses built along the water, arranged in an orderly fashion, revealing the unique craftsmanship of Jiangnan through the intricate wood and brick carvings. Every street, courtyard, and stall has been thoughtfully designed and arranged, satisfying visitors' desire to take photos while also maximizing the immersive experience of the ancient town. Unlike other ancient towns that have a street full of stinky tofu and milk tea, here the shops are few but each has its own characteristics, similar to Wuzhen's operation model. You can browse the unique cloth art and cultural creations, visit the Beigeng Tower to learn about Puyuan's past and present, taste Song-style pastries, traditional oily dumplings, and shaomai in the food street, sit in a teahouse to listen to storytelling, or follow the schedule to watch folk performances. If you stay late enough, you can even watch a night patrol show.
In Puyuan, it's impossible to finish taking photos, as everywhere is a scene of traveling through time. Siwan Bridge, Songyue Bridge, Yueyang Bridge... Nine well-preserved ancient bridges lie quietly on the green river, Fushan Pagoda, Fushan Temple, Puyuan Chamber of Commerce, Guandi Temple, Yue Family Courtyard... Each small attraction is a big surprise, and each imitation ancient building conveys profound cultural connotations.
When the lights are up, Puyuan is even more beautiful, like an oil painting. I look forward to its full completion, which will surely be an even bigger surprise.
✍️ It is recommended to visit when there are fewer people for a better experience.
It is recommended to drive yourself, and if you have enough time, you can stay in the ancient town, where there are tourist shuttle buses available.
Currently, there are few dining options, so plan your visit in advance.
Currently, the ticket price is 60 yuan, and it will increase to 120 yuan after the official opening.
Visit Wuzhen and heed the advice of the locals
If you only want to visit one ancient town, then I recommend Wuzhen🥲. Here is a worry-free guide that doesn't involve retracing your steps, be sure to save it~
🚗Transportation advice: Friends nearby can choose to drive or take a bus, with departures from Hangzhou West Lake or Shanghai, costing only a few dozen per person, saving more time💯.
✅Tongxiang travel: You can check the bus schedule, there are also buses at night~ Remember to apply for the Tongxiang ride code in advance👌.
⚠Avoid pitfalls guide: You must take this part seriously❗
1⃣During the winter vacation, Xizha has many performances🎶, such as night lantern festivals, water markets, lantern boat parades, and lantern bridge walks for blessings, which will continue until 2.25. The schedule of the programs has been organized for you👇right below.
2⃣For a visit to Wuzhen, Xizha is highly recommended for its large area, beautiful scenery, and self-operated shops without excluding tourists from other places. It's also great for photography📸; Dongzha is good for buying local products; South and North Zha are basically undeveloped, so don't go to the wrong place🙅.
3⃣Make sure your navigation is set to "Wuzhen Xizha No. 1 Visitor Center"🚩. Rickshaws and guesthouses at the entrance of the scenic area are mostly unreliable, leading you to designated shops for consumption, ignore them🙅! The visitor center is also the entrance to the scenic area, remember to keep your eyes peeled before entering👀.
4⃣There are many Hanfu and cheongsam shops at the entrance of the scenic area🎀. If you want to take photos, do your makeup before entering the scenic area, as the clothing stores inside charge 2-3 times more~ Choose thick Hanfu with velvet👘.
5⃣When choosing accommodation, be sure to consider the distance from the visitor center🚶. Many so-called "scenic area guesthouses" are actually far from the main gate🚫, and you may have to go around to get there. Ask the owner directly how far it is from the Xizha visitor center!
6⃣There are tour buses in the scenic area, take a ride when tired, 10 yuan per trip🚎. Ask the driver to drop you off at less crowded attractions for a better off-peak experience🤩~
7⃣If staying in the scenic area, remember to go to the "Water Market" for morning tea🍵, which ends at 9 am, and all seats are available. Go early to get a good indoor window seat with a beautiful view🤳. After 9 am when the scenic area opens, it gets crowded, which can affect the visiting experience😣.
8⃣The south bank of the Xizha canal is also great to explore, don't just crowd on the north bank👯~ The south bank's Nü Hong Street to General Wu area has a wide view and is more suitable for photography📷.
🗺Tour route: Wuzhen Theatre➡Mu Xin Art Museum (closed on Mondays)➡Caomu Natural Dyeing Workshop➡Shuishi Kou Market➡Jia Zuo Bookstore➡Ding Sheng Bridge➡Zhao Ming Academy➡Wuzhen Post Office➡Guo Yue Theatre➡General Wu Temple➡Water Theatre➡Qiao Li Qiao➡Bai Lian Pagoda➡Yue Lao Temple➡Dragon Dance Flower Field.

‼️Strongly recommend staying in the scenic area, there are 3 hotels and 12 themed inns under the scenic area, such as Xianzi Beach Inn, Siyanjing Inn, Beilangpeng Inn, etc., each with a different style. I stayed at Siyanjing Inn this time, named after the four ancient wells in front of the door. This is a homestay, a courtyard alone in the quiet, the pink wall and black tile architecture and wooden lattice windows are very Jiangnan style🍵

The whole ancient town is quiet and quiet. The experience is really full, take advantage of the less people, hurry up!
