A champion of the urban enterprise zones (UEZs) that Gov. Chris Christie buried in his budget, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage tonight decried Christie’s priorities.
Bollwage’s Union County city lost over $2.2 million in public safety aid after the Republican governor sized up the Democrats’ budget.
“Urban municipalities that should have more cops will not, as mayors also lose $100 million in transitional aid,” Bollwage said. “That may do well for the governor in Iowa and New Hampshire but really hurts the citizens of New Jersey.”
Himself a potential 2013 gubernatorial challenger, Bollwage praised Christie’s political prowess.
“The citizens of this state are dealing with the best wedge politician in the country,” said the veteran Democratic mayor. “He is adept at portraying the middle class and poor as scamming the system while vetoing the millionaire’s tax.”
