Dr. Khalfan Al Shueili, Oman’s Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, spoke with fDi Intelligence at MIPIM 2024 about why tourism is a pivotal part of the Oman Vision 2040: “Oman has a very big story in tourism. Its environment, heritage, different landscapes and the experiences that people get are not manufactured. They’re actually very authentic, genuine and accessible. Muscat is at the heart of that.” With Oman aiming to increase tourism's contribution to GDP from 2.1% in 2021 to 10% by 2040, the $1.3bn Al Khuwair Downtown and Waterfront development has a key role to play. It will create a new destination in the centre of Muscat for tourists, international business and local community. Some more highlights from the Oman Pavilion at MIPIM, including a visit from Lord Dominic Johnson, Minister for Investment at the UK Department for Business and Trade on Wednesday. That morning we hosted a panel discussion on 15-minute neighbourhoods chaired by Dr Tim Moonen from The Business Of Cities alongside Duncan Price from Buro Happold, Paolo Zilli from Zaha Hadid Architects, Rob McNicol from City of London Corporation and Kawther Al-Lawati from Ministry of Housing & Urban Planning (MoHUP). They discussed global best-practice approaches for these neighbourhoods, from London to Muscat. We also hosted an evening panel focussed on Oman's investment proposition, including its unique 2040 Vision and the transformative strategies supporting that. This week at MIPIM we introduced the international investment community to the Omani Mountain Destination on Jabal al Akhdar. Situated on Oman's 'Green Mountain', the destination will house 8,000 residents across four villages, in addition to ample retail, hospitality and leisure expected to attract more than 2,000 visitors each day. As Oman's highest altitude development, it embraces the natural landscapes of the Jabal and will couple these with unique outdoor experiences. Native ecology will be preserved and enhanced with a protected National Scenic Reserve and Dark Sky Zone. See our vision for the Omani Mountain Destination come to life in the video below. Earlier this week, we revealed our vision for the Al Khuwair Downtown and Waterfront Development in Muscat. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, downtown Muscat will receive a $1.3 billion revival, delivering a renewed waterfront district in Oman’s capital.   With the marina as its cornerstone, the development will bring an enhanced cultural offering and recreational waterfront to the Gulf of Oman. Spanning 3.6 million sqm, the destination will combine commercial and residential space and prioritise public realm to accommodate Oman’s growing number of residents and visitors.   We’ve also collaborated with Buro Happold to ensure sustainability measures and climate and coastal resilience are embedded throughout.
