Building Your Confidence the Right way!
A few years ago, a musician living in Canada contacted me to see if I could help him overcome a case of very severe stage fright. He would become so anxious during performances that he would literally freeze in place, unable to move. He would sweat so profusely that he had to wear a sweater to hide the stains. His throat would become so dry that he could not speak, and when he did speak he could not control what came out! He had read about Mindfulness Therapy and contacted me to see if he could get online mindfulness therapy to help him overcome this performance anxiety.
This is exactly the kind of client that I like to work with – highly motivated, intelligent and interested in mindfulness, which is my passion!
How to Overcome Performance Anxiety
During the first couple of sessions, we quickly got to the underlying cause of his anxiety panic attacks – uncontrolled and habitual patterns of reactive thinking that were highly charged with emotion.
Like most habitual thinking, or Automatic Negative Thinking as it is called by CBT Therapists, he was quite unaware of these thoughts. They simply arose out of habit and then took control of his mind, filling it with the anxiety that was associated with these automatic thoughts. But, of course it gets much worse than this as we start reacting to the first round of habitual thoughts. Soon we become incapacitated by a tidal wave of negative and uncontrolled thoughts, and the anxiety grows in strength producing a panic attack.
The first step in Mindfulness Therapy for panic anxiety like this is to train the awareness function of the mind so that we can recognize these automatic thoughts the moment they arise, and before they gain strength. A reactive thought is like a spark: it starts small but can quickly turn into a forest fire if we continue to feed it through our unawareness.
Neutralizing the Underlying Emotions that Feed Reactive Thinking and Anxiety
The next step in Online Mindfulness Therapy is to address the underlying anxiety itself. Think of anxiety as emotional energy that flows into reactive thoughts and gives them power over you. If we can neutralize this emotional energy then the thoughts have no power to affect us – they become neutralized and start to change into more positive thought forms.
Mindfulness Therapy is one of the most effective forms of Cognitive Therapy for Anxiety and Panic Attacks
After 6 sessions with the musician from Canada, he finally found it possible to neutralize his reactive thinking and the underlying anxiety itself and was able to perform without panicking.
In my experience, Mindfulness Therapy is very effective at helping people overcome all kinds of anxiety – including social anxiety and performance anxiety. It works for musicians or business executives, actors and anyone who has to present in front of an audience.
The other thing I like about Mindfulness Therapy is that it produces results very quickly, and this is simply because we focus directly on looking at the actual cognitive and emotional processes that generate anxiety – a process-oriented therapy that is quite different from traditional “talking therapy.”
Online Therapy for Public Speaking Anxiety – How to build Confidence
I am frequently contacted by business executives, scientists and others who depend on public speaking, but find speaking in front of an audience to be a horrendous ordeal.
Public speaking anxiety also responds well to Mindfulness-based Online Therapy by teaching very powerful and effective ways of relaxing the overactive racing mind. It is actually much easier than you might expect to overcome fear of public speaking or excessive shyness. You just have to focus on changing the underlying process through Mindfulness methods. Confidence is a mental state that can be developed and cultivated like any other, and the techniques of mindfulness and positive image visualization are extremely effective for building confidence.
