🩺 Welcoming future doctors to Western Province! We are thrilled to welcome medical students Praajina and Michelle to Balimo, Western Province, as they begin their rural placement! Both doctors are enrolled at James Cook University, Australia, and they join a dedicated group of doctors-in-training who have completed their mandatory attachments under our flagship collaboration with the Western Provincial Health Authority (WPHA) and partner universities. The students will gain hands-on experience in resource-limited settings, including working in SDP-funded community health initiatives. So far, six students from The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) and Griffith University have completed this enriching two-month placement—which included an exciting trip with one of our 12 aerial patrol teams reaching 74 communities. 🎓 Conall, a medical student from Griffith University, said the awesome experience offered deep insights into the challenges of rural healthcare. He also had the chance to enjoy some Barramundi fishing—a true Western Province experience! 🎣 A huge thank you to the SDP Health team for providing clinical mentorship to the students. 👏 Let’s continue working towards improving the health of people in Western Province! #RuralHealth #WesternProvince #SDP Lesieli Moala Taviri Daniel Mangwayana Sylvester Huafolo Imelda Siaguru Myron Pyakalyia Dr Brad Shaw Mark Haihuie

SDP coordinates K300,000 worth of life-saving supplies for Kiunga Hospital. 🏥 💊 In response to an urgent call from the Western Provincial Health Authority (WPHA) over the New Year, SDP saw the timely delivery of more than 140 boxes of essential medical supplies, which were airlifted from Port Moresby to the remote North Fly district. Manager for Kiunga Hospital, Mr. Kekela Negege, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the much-needed support, highlighting how the supplies arrived just in time when the hospital faced empty shelves due to delayed area medical store deliveries. This SDP-WPHA partnership proved instrumental, ensuring that patient care continued without interruption. 🩺 Despite many businesses and personnel being on holiday during the festive season, both SDP and WPHA staff worked diligently to facilitate the transportation of critical supplies to Kiunga Hospital. This allowed the hospital to provide essential healthcare services during the peak holiday period when clinical visits typically surge across the country. Our CEO, Lesieli Taviri, said that “SDP is committed to working with WPHA to reduce occurrences of drug shortages”. This intervention is in line with our mission to promote health - one of five priority areas aligned with the Provincial Government plans. Western Provincial Government launches 5-Year Development Plan. Congratulations to the Western Provincial Government on the launch of the WP Integrated Development Plan 2023-2027, including the four districts. Provincial Governor Hon Taboi Awi Yoto affirmed his vision for a “healthy, educated people with food on the table and money in their pocket”. Our SDP Chairman, Peter Graham, welcomed the forward thinking. “SDP’s plan over the next five years is to complement the plans”, he said. Since 2019, SDP has expanded its aerial health patrol teams from one to twelve, serving 74 communities. Additionally, a 12-bed hospital will open in Morehead in March. These, together with other initiatives, have seen the province climb from 19th place to 10th on the National Department of Health Index. With investments in education, SDP will enrol its first 40 students in our Balimo Nursing College this year. These programs fall under the strategic vision of our ‘Gutpela Community’ Strategy 2025-2030, which complements eight of the twelve priorities in the provincial plan.
