𝗗𝗼𝗰 𝗔 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝟮𝗔 🥳🙌 Our esteemed President and Chief Scientist, Dr. Neil Aldrin Mallari, recently embarked on a groundbreaking journey to Africa as part of the Africa to Archipelago (A2A) project. This collaborative initiative, backed by the National Geographic Society, Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc., The Mind Museum, BGC Arts Center, and Bonifacio Global City, sought to bridge the gap between Africa and the Philippines through art, science, and culture. Doc A was part of the Filipino contingent, which includes luminaries like OPM icon, Ryan Cayabyab, film producer, Noel Ferrer, Director of the Mind Museum, Maribel Garcia, multi-awarded composer, arranger and singer, Moy Ortiz, and Rjho Dee & Darwin Cayetano from Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc., who delved into the rich mosaic of South African culture, exploring storytelling, science, art, and music. This immersive experience showcased how water and the universal language of music connect oral storytelling from Africa to the archipelago. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and storytelling, the A2A project aimed to redefine narratives about living and envision diverse futures for Filipinos, drawing inspiration from the voices of fisherfolk and the concept of an International Oceans Station. Doc A succinctly summarized his learnings, “South Africa Refocusing: In the midst of the vast landscape, nature’s tapestry, and biophony, one needs to focus, conserve one’s energies, resources, and life force to achieve greater impact, to create that safe operating space for nature and people. Together we continue changing the story, changing the narrative, and changing the storyteller—all for the common good!” -- Africa to Archipelago project (A2A) is a special collaborative project of the National Geographic Society and the Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc. (BAFI) through The Mind Museum and the BGC Arts Center, with Bonifacio Global City (BGC). #NatGeoStorytellersCollective #A2A #CulturalExchange #AfricaToArchipelago #NatGeoStorytellersCollective #TheMindMuseum #AfricaToThePhilippines

  • 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 | CCIPH shines in Japan seminar on forest-DRR The Center for Conservation Innovations' Project Coordinator for Eco-DRR, Sunshine Telio, was invited to be a speaker at an international seminar titled "Application needs and potential of Forest-DRR technology in developing countries." The event took place last January 31, 2024, at the Premium Ball Room located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo's TKP Garden City PREMIUM Jinbocho. Shine presented the project "Enhancing Community Resilience to Climate Change in Mountain Watersheds" in the Rural Municipality of Tublay in Benguet. The project aims to implement ecosystem-based adaptation and mitigation measures for disaster risk reduction by enhancing the forest's ecosystem services and benefits. She also highlighted the unique experiences of engaging communities at the grassroots level and the processes the project has undertaken to ensure the appropriateness and applicability of identified ecosystem-based adaptation and mitigation measures for DRR and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in Tublay. While Eco-DRR refers to all ecosystem-based approaches that promote sustainable societies while benefiting both human well-being and biodiversity, Forest DRR is a type of Eco-DRR that specifically focuses on using the protective and mitigating capabilities of forests to reduce the risks and impacts of natural disasters on communities and infrastructure. The event was organized by the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) and supported by Japan’s Forestry Agency, Ministry of the Environment, Director General for Disaster Management, Cabinet Office, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) ____ The Tublay Eco-DRR project involves systematically harnessing the regulatory functions of forest ecosystems to mitigate, prevent, or buffer against disasters. It is being implemented together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan (MAFF), Cordillera Green Network (CGN), and Farm to Cup groups (F2C). Eco-DRR offers a promising and increasingly recognized approach to risk management, particularly due to its cost-effectiveness, multiple benefits, and alignment with sustainability principles.

  • 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟮𝟴 🌍 | Last December 09, 2023, CCIPH President and Chief Scientist, Dr. Neil Aldrin David Mallari, talked about the Green Assessment and Green Recovery Project (GA-GRP) on the COP28 side event, “Post-Disaster Adaptation and Resilience Planning of Island Ecosystems: The Philippine Experience,” where he served as a plenary speaker. Dr. Mallari, who is concurrently serving as the Ecosystems Integration Specialist of the USAID-SIBOL Project, presented the Philippines as a case study, coming from CCIPH's own experience in developing, piloting, and training natural resource managers on using SIBOL’s GA-GRP, which has been described as a legacy product of the Sukat ng Kalikasan (SnK), which itself is co-developed by CCIPH. 🍃 In his talk, he emphasized that when environmental concerns are not strategically considered at the outset of the recovery process, this would have negative effects on both people and the ecosystem and their capacity to recover because their direct correlation is clear. “Today we hoping to change that narrative by developing the GA-GRP which is designed to transform the classical DRR into Eco-DRR, one that includes biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services lens,” Dr. Mallari said. He also talked about how there is a need for all sectors to band together and help create an enabling policy environment for the full implementation of this framework. The Green Assessment Framework was developed to determine the extent of damage caused by typhoons to biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services. It is currently being piloted in SIBOL’s key sites, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and Cleopatra’s Needle Critical Habitat in Palawan, and Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape in Surigao Del Norte. Watch the recorded livestream here 👉 (starts at 19:40): https://lnkd.in/g3CjdA9m —— The #COP28 is being held in Dubai, UAE from November 30 to December 12.
