  • We just finished another trip through the outer islands of Kiribati! Working on both sides of the equator, and across 4 islands, we carried out over 55 individual surveys of AtoN sites. Our AtoN surveys were part of a broader site inspection program for a major The World Bank funded infrastructure project, where maritime facilities will be constructed at each island to foster safe handling of shipping and improve access to services. We worked alongside a team from our client Hall Contracting Pty Ltd, and the project designers Arup. Apart from AtoN inspections, the program also included field work on the nominated maritime facility sites - geotechnical investigations, design surveys, environmental assessments, and commencement of a project-long engagement program with local communities. These initial site investigations are critical, and we now move into the design phase, where results from the field activities will be applied to the design process. Working with great people and experiencing some of the remotest parts of the Pacific make this project very unique. #Kiribati #Pacific #AtoN #maritimesafety #IALA

Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas (MSM), in collaboration with M-NAV SOLUTIONS and HJS Maritime SDN BHD, has completed the modernization and automation of the One Fathom Bank Lighthouse’s lighting system in Malaysia. This project integrates Aids to Navigation (AtoN) equipment specifically designed by MSM to enhance maritime safety in the Strait of Malacca. The One Fathom Bank Lighthouse is an offshore lighthouse located in the Strait of Malacca, a critical maritime corridor for global trade. Known for its shallow waters and sandbank formations like the One Fathom Bank itself, this strait is one of the busiest shipping routes worldwide. Its name refers to the original depth of a fathom (1.8 meters), underscoring the historical importance of this lighthouse in ensuring safe navigation through challenging bathymetric conditions and dense maritime traffic. Maritime signalling at this site dates back to 1852 with the establishment of a lightship. In 1874, the first lighthouse was built using innovative "screw-pile foundation" technology. By 1907, it was replaced with the "old" One Fathom Bank Lighthouse, whose 27-meter height and range met the demands of increasing maritime traffic. In 1999, the "new" One Fathom Bank Lighthouse was constructed 500 meters away from the old one, which is now preserved as a historic landmark. The new lighthouse, constructed on concrete piles, rises 43 meters above sea level and includes a concrete pier for larger vessels. Its design features a spacious circular platform topped by a dome from which a cylindrical tower emerges, blending functionality with architectural aesthetics. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 In 2024, the lighthouse has undergone a complete renovation of its lighting and automation system, integrating state-of-the-art technology designed by MSM:  • MFR LED Light: A LED reflector light with a range of 24 NM, featuring a safety redundancy system and gearless, brushless electronic MRM160 rotation motor;  • MTF3000 Control Panel: Monitors the lighting and rotation system through a digital display that shows operational status and real-time alerts;  • MRA02 Astronomical Clock: Controls the lighthouse’s on/off cycles with triple night detection (two photodiodes and a GPS module), ensuring maximum precision; and,  • AIS Type 3: Transmits and receives identification and status information in real time, enabling remote monitoring and control of the lighthouse. 𝗔 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 Through this project, the One Fathom Bank Lighthouse strengthens its position as a key Aids to Navigation asset, essential for ensuring safe passage in the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest and most strategic maritime routes in the world.

  • Working with AtoN takes us to some interesting places! We recently spent some time in Kiribati, in remote Micronesia, for the first in-country visits for a major infrastructure project, where we will be working on delivering AtoN infrastructure with the prime contractor, Hall Contracting Pty Ltd. Under this The World Bank funded project, maritime facilities will be constructed on the outer islands to facilitate the safe handling of inter-island vessels and the movement of passengers and cargo. The network of AtoN is being installed to support navigation to and from these facilities, with the goal of supporting safe, efficient maritime transport and protection of the marine environment. Design is critical on these types of projects for longevity of infrastructure, and we had the pleasure on this trip to work alongside some of the design team from Arup, who will be responsible for design of the infrastructure. Next up are the site inspections, where we will be spending some time out on the water inspecting the proposed AtoN sites for lead-in to the design process. Throughout the whole process, we continue to work with Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas to ensure our AtoN concepts are IALA compliant, relevant and suitable for the remote, tropical conditions they will be operated in. A busy time ahead! #IALA #maritimesafety #maritimeenvironment #Kiribati #Micronesia
