Fair Trade Certified! Congratulations to the team of Big Fish in the Maldives for achieving its first Fair Trade certification for its traditional, single-hook Yellowfin and Skipjack Tuna fishery! This is a great achievement and will support community-based, coastal tuna fisheries in the Maldives accessing direct consumer markets. Blueyou' ocean impact team under the lead of Abdulla Shakir has been working with the team of Big Fish and Control Union on the implementation of the standards of Fair Trade USA seafood program in two island communities, which now benefit from Fair Trade premiums to improve environmental and social conditions on site! Raising Seafood in Balance with Nature In 2020, 5.6 Mil MT of globally farmed shrimp consumed 8.4 Mil tons of high protein feed, creating an annual carbon footprint of 40 Mio. tons of CO2eq. Considering an average processing yield of 60%, 8.4 Mio tons of high-energy, protein-rich feed was required to produce 3.36 Mil tons of edible protein. Despite sustainability claims by the shrimp industry, the use of high energy feedstuffs in intensive aquaculture increases risk of disease, eutrophication, loss of biodiversity, degradation of habitats and soil - and incentivizes destructive fishing and farming practices for accessing cheap sources of fishmeal and soy, overshooting the planetary boundaries, which have already been transgressed in six out of nine dimensions. This is a serious misconception: Shrimp as low trophic species, do not require compound feeds to grow! SELVA SHRIMP demonstrates the true potential of blue food and promotes growing aquatic species without feed, fertilizers, or chemicals – creating nature-based and community-inclusive food harvesting systems within the planetary boundaries. This not only results in great tasting seafood choices, but actually allows all of us to tap-into climate-smart protein sources which are at the same level as good performing plant-based proteins such as tofu and chickpeas. As our global food system is responsible for 35% of the total greenhouse gas emissions, we must rethink the way we produce our food. Restorative, zero-input aquaculture of lower trophic, filter-feeding species such as bivalve mollusks, crab and shrimp points us into the right direction. #RestorativeAquaculture #SelvaShrimp #ClimateSmart #mangroves #carbonFootprint #servingtheocean #PlanetaryBoundaries
