The Global Plastics Treaty negotiations are midway in Busan. Our hopes are with the negotiators to find pathways for an ambitious treaty. 🙏 Emerging markets and small island developing states (SIDS) are especially hard hit by the plastic crisis, and have huge financing and infrastructure gaps. Their livelihoods often depend on the ocean and their geographic circumstances add another layer of complexity to waste management. Our Managing Director Stefanie Beitien has spoken to a wide range of country delegations and stakeholders about the case study of the Philippine EPR law. We had a full house on Sunday for our INC5 side event, “EPR, Loans & Plastic Credits: Financing Solutions for Indonesia and other Emerging Markets" - and we've come away super energized by the discussion! We thank all attendees from multilaterals, companies, NGOs, and civil society organizations for their interest in innovative financing solutions to address the plastic pollution crisis in Indonesia and other Emerging Markets. Some key takeaways from the event: 🌏 The financing gap in Emerging Markets is particularly acute. Indonesia needs $18 billion to reduce ocean plastic leakage and achieve a circular economy.  🌏 EPR can play a critical role in tackling plastic pollution - but laws need to be stringent. ADB's policy linked loan is one example of how regulations can be strengthened and supported. 🌏 Bundling zero-interest loans and plastic credits can accelerate impact by enabling SMEs to scale Indonesia’s recycling sector.  🌏 Plastic credits can generate immediate impact while incentivizing much needed investments in infrastructure and alternatives. In less than a week, the fifth and last round of negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty will commence. Among the options raised for the treaty provisions, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes have been a critical topic in past negotiation rounds over the last two years. In this article by the World Economic Forum, our Founder Nanette Medved-Po and other experts weigh in on how EPR should be featured in the final version of the instrument. We are pleased to have our Managing Director Stefanie Beitien speak at the Second Informal Webinar for Observers hosted by the UN Environment Programme and the INC Chair for the Global Plastics Treaty. There, Stefanie talked about how plastic credits can serve as a financing mechanism under the Treaty and support EPR schemes, especially in emerging markets with the biggest infrastructure needs. “It is important to get the voices of emerging markets heard as they often need to look at examples from the Global North, which have very different realities and needs. Busan is actually not the end--it’s the start to more collaborations and joint efforts. And therefore it is very important that the treaty text is ambitious and solid,” Stefanie emphasized.
