It’s about time to introduce our Book in the making entitled ‘PeaceScapes.’ What is PeaceScapes? The project seeks to strengthen the idea of peace and human security through documentary articles and videos paired with activism to stand with the millions of people across the world suffering the devastating impact of violence and conflict. In 2014, the theory—PEACESCAPES—was born. It seeks to highlight an inclusive definition of peace in the Philippine context. Peace is contested by multiple meanings, which may stem from social and cultural contexts. Peace can disappear all of a sudden, even in places where peace is a longstanding norm. We, as people, have explored various aspects of peace such as what it is, what it should be, as well as the different factors influencing the chances of achieving it. Through PeaceScapes, people can explore how their framing of “peace” helps or hinders the chances of achieving it. Peace rests on a complex and fragile fabric of interrelated values, attitudes, and behaviors. It is necessary for the implementation of international treatises as well as for the course of daily life. The project aims to increase awareness about history and relationships developed between cultures and to highlight the processes spurring intercultural dialogue and the reconciliation of previously contending cultures. Particular attention is given to the effective roles of women and youth, as well as minorities like indigenous peoples, whose significance in the life of societies has often been overlooked. There is a special focus on claims of cultural identities and citizenship. The government agencies and non-government organizations in the Philippines recognize that armed conflict, extrajudicial killings, and human rights violations have devastating impacts on societies. Women and girls, and men and boys are disproportionately affected in conflict and post-conflict settings. They are often tragically subjected to gross human rights violations, including sexual and gender-based violence, as these are used as a weapons of war. We all want to see effective justice for all people affected by sexual violence. We know that some sectors deliberately exclude vulnerable groups from rebuilding of peace. In the landscape of peace or PeaceScapes, we want everyone to take their rightful place in the rebuilding of peace; we want to stress the significance of their involvement and participation in peace. We know that women, youth, and other vulnerable stakeholders’ participation in institutional reform facilitates access to justice. Since then, PeaceScapes has conducted a series of consultations, forums, and focus group discussions in various fields using a multi-sectoral approach, particularly during the grassroots campaign against the Anti-Terror Law.

The narrative of peace that emerges from our cultural context is infused with the wisdom of our heritage. The teachings of our ancestors emphasize harmony, respect for one another, and the importance of community. Leveraging these values, I can offer a viewpoint that resonates with those in my community, encouraging them to adopt a collective approach toward peacebuilding. The strength of our identity as Tausug people, combined with our unwavering faith, serves as an amulet—protecting our spirit and fortifying our resolve in the face of adversity.

Wisdom from My Father: A Lens for Change and Resilience Growing up as a Tausug instilled in me a profound sense of identity and purpose. One piece of wisdom shared by my father resonates deeply: "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." This principle has shaped my worldview and equipped me to navigate the complexities of our contemporary society. Through this lens of wisdom, I engage with my community in peacebuilding efforts, embodying a culture of peace and dialogue. The Tausug identity is rich with traditions and practices passed down from our forefathers, serving as a shield and weapon as I participate in forums and consultations. Engaging in dialogue about peace-building embodies the values and wisdom inherited from our ancestors and reinforces the need for an inclusive and community-oriented approach. Intertwining my ethnic heritage with the teachings of my faith, I leverage the values of compassion, justice, and community service in fostering dialogue and understanding. Embracing our cultural and spiritual heritage allows it to inform our actions and perspectives rather than allowing external influences to dictate our narratives. We must preserve and celebrate our traditions and values, recognizing that our history and heritage are active components that inspire and guide us in our quest for peace. Community engagement remains at the heart of my approach, creating safe spaces where individuals can express themselves, share their stories, and learn from one another. This inclusivity catalyzes healing and understanding, bridging divides and addressing conflicts with empathy and respect. The narrative of peace that emerges from our cultural context is infused with the wisdom of our heritage, emphasizing harmony, respect, and the importance of community. Leveraging these values, I encourage a collective approach toward peacebuilding, fortified by the strength of our identity as Tausug people and our unwavering faith. #peace #positivechange #justice #love #Tausug #sulu #mindanao

Farewell, My Family ✍️ Algazelus Farewell, my kin, as I bid adieu, This parting weighs my heart anew. Mother, Father, siblings dear, Your love shines like stars, forever clear. Though brief my visit, time flies by, I cherish every moment with a sigh. Sulu's shores may hold me far apart, But love's embrace unites our heart. Zamboanga's waves may separate, Yet my affection knows no abate. Like bubbles dancing on the shore, My love for you will stay forevermore. This goodbye is but a temporary plight, For we shall reunite with all our might. In love's embrace, we'll find our way, And meet again, one glorious day. So fare thee well, my family true, I'll carry your love wherever I go. Until we meet, my heart will yearn, For in your presence, my spirit burns. ******** Ps. kindly like my FB page (facebook.com/iamalgazelus) #life #love #family #islam #muslim #Sulu #peacescapes

Education is important in shaping the future of a nation. It is a powerful tool that can break the cycle of poverty and pave the way for a brighter future. However, for many children in marginalized communities, particularly in Muslim majority areas in Mindanao, this dream of education remains a distant possibility. Due to various challenges including poverty, conflict, and displacement, many orphan children and street children in these communities are not able to go to school and receive proper education. Realizing the urgency of this issue, a group of concerned individuals has launched the Equipped to Learn Campaign, with the objective of supporting 100 orphan and street children in 100 schools as pilot beneficiaries. The campaign aims to bridge the gap between the community and school, minimize the number of out-of-school youth, and provide school supplies and awareness in the community. This is a call for support for a noble cause that can make a significant impact in the lives of these children. One of the main challenges faced by orphan and street children in Muslim-majority communities is the lack of support. Most of these children come from poor families and are unable to afford the basic school supplies required for their education. As a result, they end up missing out on the opportunity to receive an education, which could have changed their lives for the better. The Equipped to Learn Campaign seeks to break this barrier by providing these children with the necessary school supplies and creating awareness in the community about the importance of education. This can motivate and inspire these children to pursue their education, despite their difficult circumstances. Furthermore, the campaign aims to minimize the number of out-of-school youth in the region of Mindanao. It is an unfortunate reality that many children in these communities are forced to drop out of school due to various reasons, such as poverty, early marriage, and child labor. By providing these children with the necessary support and resources, the campaign not only opens the door of education for them but also helps in keeping them away from harmful activities and risky situations. Education can be a powerful tool in protecting these vulnerable children and empowering them to become agents of change in their communities. In addition, the Equipped to Learn Campaign also envisions bridging the gap between the community and school. There is often a lack of understanding and communication between these two entities, which hinders the full potential of education. Through the campaign, community members will be encouraged to participate and support these children in their education journey. This can create a positive impact not only on the lives of the children but also on the community as a whole. It can foster a sense of responsibility and ownership in the community for the education of its children and strengthen the relationship between the community and school.
