UNICEF and UNHCR Philippines, with the generous contribution from The Government of Japan are working with the Ministry of Social Services and Development, the Bangsamoro Youth Commission, the PSA - Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and the OPAPRU to strengthen the protection for Sama Bajaus and unregistered children within the context of forced displacement due to armed conflict. #EndChildhoodStatelessness #ForEveryChild, legal identity.

📍 #KristinePH and #PepitoPH Response: Tuguegarao City Estela Gannaban Tumbali, a 25-year-old from the Agta tribe in Cagayan Valley, shares her family’s harrowing experience as #PepitoPH tore through their community. With flash floods rising and landslides looming, they were forced to evacuate, leaving behind not just their home, but generations of memories. But hope arrived through cash assistance from UNICEF and Department of Social Welfare and Development - DSWD's Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program via Land Bank of the Philippines, funded by United Nations CERF. This support allowed Estela to provide food and educational materials for her children—and even gave them the chance to jumpstart a small business to rebuild their future. Their story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of Indigenous communities facing the frontlines of climate disasters. 🌏✨ #ForEveryChild

The Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) is a national commission tasked to undertake a comprehensive national assessment and evaluation of the performance of the #Philippine education sector. Its Year 2 Report is a critical milestone in diagnosing and addressing the deep-rooted challenges in Philippine education. At UNICEF Philippines we stand with EDCOM II in the urgent call to FIX THE FOUNDATIONS and sustain the urgency that prompted Congress to create the Commission in the first place. We fully support the recommendations of the report to: - Invest in early childhood education - Prioritize foundational learning - Strengthen alternative learning pathway - Build climate-resilient education systems The urgency remains. The absence of new large-scale assessments doesn’t mean the problem is gone—learning outcomes are still declining. As AI and emerging technologies reshape industries, graduates must be prepared with the critical thinking skills to thrive. In 2025, UNICEF Philippines will continue working alongside EDCOM II and DepEd to push for impactful reforms—from releasing the updated Philippine Early Learning Development Standards to strengthening governance, education resilience, and skills development.

Children in the Bangsamoro region have the highest illiteracy rate in the #Philippines, brought about by compounding challenges caused by high poverty rates, political instability, armed conflict, disasters, and limited access to secondary schools. UNICEF Philippines works with the Bangsamoro Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education to give every child a fair chance at quality education. We are expanding the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, and Maguindanao to support 3,000 out-of-school youth in returning to school or developing skills to become job-ready. We are excited to partner with BDO Unibank Foundation over the next two years in achieving this goal. We believe that effectively bridging education gaps in BARMM today will boost the socio-economic mobility of its youth in the future.
#ForEveryChild, a second chance. UNICEF Philippines and BDO Foundation enter a two-year partnership to help expand learning opportunities for out-of-school youth in #Bangsamoro through the Alternative Learning System (ALS). The partnership aims to support 3,000 young people in Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, and Maguindanao to reintegrate into formal education or develop essential employable skills.
