Climate Governance Malaysia’s (CGM) Director's Masterclass: A Call to Action for Climate Leadership On 8 November 2024, ICDM hosted CGM’s Director's Masterclass: A Call to Action for Climate Leadership with a powerful session focused on Climate Action. Michele Kythe Lim, President and CEO of ICDM, set the tone for the event as she emphasised, "Board directors, as leaders of the boardroom, have a critical role to play in navigating their companies through the intensifying climate crisis." She noted that by equipping directors with the essential knowledge and tools they need to address climate change, we can work together to build a sustainable future. The event brought together a panel of distinguished experts to address urgent Climate Action issues. Kyoko Okuyama, a Legal and Policy Researcher at ClientEarth, opened the discussion by outlining the escalating legal risks associated with climate change and the importance of understanding the evolving legal landscape. Building on this theme, Simon Wong, an Independent Advisor and co-leader of the Sustainable Finance Teaching Team at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, focused on the role of boards in driving climate action and the need for robust transition plans. The discussion continued with Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, a former Attorney General of Malaysia, provided legal insights into climate-related litigation and the potential implications for businesses. Philippe Joubert, Founder and CEO of Earth on Board, emphasised the importance of integrating environmental considerations into corporate decision-making and the risks of greenwashing. Rejina Rahim, Advisor for the Institutional Investors Council (IIC), discussed the role of institutional investors in driving climate action through engagement with companies. Wrapping up the session, Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar, Founder and Chairperson of Climate Governance Malaysia, provided a concluding remark, highlighting the urgent need for climate action and the transformative role of corporate governance in building a sustainable future. This year, Eco-Business and UNDP marked World Environment Day with the virtual launch of UNDP’s report ‘Asia in Focus: Biodiversity and the Business and Human Rights Agenda’. Thank you to all who celebrated with us! Amid growing concern over #biodiversity depletion and climate #disasters, experts have called on businesses to adopt nature-related disclosure mechanisms to monitor their socio-environmental impacts. However, limited #data availability and accessibility hinders the adoption of #reporting guidelines such as the UN-backed Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). “With carbon #emissions, we have metrics like CO2 per tonne. A key focus of the COP29 climate talks in Baku, Azerbaijan in November is climate finance. A new global climate finance target is expected to be set this year to help address the needs and priorities of developing countries. Though among the world’s most climate-vulnerable areas, Southeast Asia receives only a small fraction of adaptation and mitigation financing. Access to climate finance is hampered by a lack of bankable projects, regulatory uncertainty, and limited data and knowledge. An integrated approach is needed to address policy gaps and align climate ambitions with sector and fiscal planning. In 2018–2019, climate finance flows to Southeast Asia amounted to just $27.8 billion or 5% of the nearly $520 billion tracked for Asia and the Pacific. According to the Climate Policy Initiative, the region requires up to $1.7 trillion annually until 2030 to meet climate targets, while early estimates of ADB put climate finance needs of Southeast Asian countries at $210 billion per year. However, these figures will likely be adjusted as countries scale up national climate action plans to tackle a worsening climate crisis and to transition to a green economy. I couldn't agree more with the statement of Naeeda of ADB that to gain access to more climate finance, Southeast Asian countries need to expand their policy and create an enabling environment for climate action. #ClimateEmergency | The Loss and Damage (L&D) Fund was conceived by member parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It serves as a financial mechanism to address the unavoidable and irreversible impacts of the climate emergency. The fund encourages voluntary contributions from developed countries, but invites developing countries to contribute to it too. It has emerged as the third pillar of climate finance alongside adaptation finance and mitigation finance; it is meant to help communities restore and rebuild what is lost and damaged.
