We touched down in Bangkok on a slightly overcast day. It was a Saturday but we were told to expect a bit of traffic from the airport to the Grand Hyatt Erawan. And true to the word, we were stuck in traffic in one end of the street for 20 minutes before making it to the other end of the street. We arrived at the dazzling world of the Erawan group as the hotel enveloped its visitors with endless Christmas charm. Christmas was maybe two weeks away, but the Buddhist country spared no effort in propping up the lavish appearances of a celebratory spirit that would appeal to visitors of the western world. The Erawan Group runs a host of businesses in hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail and office rental in Thailand. As a leader of the hospitality business in Thailand, Erawan offers the full range of hotel options for visitors, from the luxury line to the very basic budget choices. The Grand Hyatt is considered a luxury option under the Erawan Group. It does have a reputation for being haunted, however. The group of six businessmen that were murdered by poison (including the murderer’s own suicide) died in one of the villas in the Grand Hyatt in 2024. This made international news. The famous and much frequented Erawan Shrine is right next door to the Grand Hyatt Erawan. But people are naturally forgetful. When we checked in the hotel, we sensed in this festive atmosphere a business-as-usual vibe. We were not staying at the villas either, so I eagerly checked into a standard hotel room and enjoyed the comfort throughout my stay there. The hotel offers housekeeping twice a day, and everything is dong specklessly clean and perfect. I have tried four restaurants in the hotel and they were fantastic. 📍Chishang Township (池上鄉) is a picturesque rural town in Taitung County, Taiwan, known for its endless rice fields, stunning mountain landscapes, and rich indigenous culture. Chishang is famous for producing some of Taiwan’s finest rice and offers a peaceful escape into nature. 🚄Chishang is a 3.5h express train ride away from Taipei, and we stayed at a hostel, Taitung Gift Box. The food around town is really good, and I liked the egg pancake, noodles, and braised pork they serve there. Top Attractions & Things to Do in Chishang: 1. Ride Through Chishang’s Rice Fields 🚴♂️ - The Chishang Rice Paddies are the town’s most iconic attraction. - Rent a bike from the train station from 200TWD and cycle along scenic paths surrounded by golden rice fields and lush mountains. - Visit the Brown Boulevard (伯朗大道) – A car-free road famous for its breathtaking countryside views, made popular by a Mr. Brown Coffee commercial featuring Takeshi Kaneshiro. 2. Incredible coffee and incredible food. There is a reason the pistacho café is famous. They have good taste, they are friendly and it was a great atmosphere. The space is a little crowded but the food/drink more than make up for it. The tahni and cheese snack is also amazing! The owner is so passionate and friendly! I highly recommend trying the coffee and snacks here! Quite literally the best coffee I’ve ever had in my life. Such a cute cafe with a super friendly owner. He loves his work and you can tell. Amazing Cappuccino with the right strength and flavour. I tried the flavoured Cappuccinos with Pistachio, Lemon, and Coconut too which were spectacular! I have never had coffee like this before, it is simply a unique concept. The owner is really passionate about coffee. His house speciality is pistachio coffee. This time I tried only classical flat white, but I'm told pistachio is the way to go. Pricewise, it's not bad at all. Delicious and stunning food. I just find the pancakes with caramel sauce too sweet to my liking but otherwise it’s lovely. The service is very good the staff are accommodating the place is just quite busy specially on a weekend. Hard to walk-in especially in peak hours. We were greeted warmly and offered friendly service. Although there was patio seating, we chose to sit in the very cozy attic (which my son referred to as the loft). I love the ordering system and how beautiful it is in the Garden and the inside. Great banana chocolate bread and apple pie and amazing chai latte. As a bonus, the space was filled with beautiful plants! We tried the Mocha, Macha Tea, Pastel de Nata, Croissant, Apple Pie, and Pumpkin Bread. The ambiance was really nice. The food was scrumptious and they have different variety on the menu. Their sandwiches are incredibly delicious, and the blueberry muffin is the best I’ve had in the city. The atmosphere is charming, and even when it’s bustling, it adds to the overall appeal. The official name of Tai Tau Chau is the Shek O Headland Picnic Area. It is an islet off of the Shek O Headland, with rocky shores and all-around views of the seas and the hilly terrain in northeast Shek O. It takes only about 20 minutes to walk from the Shek O bus stop to reach the islet. I spent about an hour walking leisurely on all the paths in the islet. I even sipped takeout coffee on a high point overlooking Ng Fun Chau (see below). The islet is indeed perfect for picnic. I do not know why the Blue Bridge of Tai Tau Chau is known locally as the Lover’s Bridge. The descriptions on-site suggest that because the blue color (it does seems like baby blue) is romantic, and that the bridge is only wide enough for two people, it came to be known as the Lovers’ Bridge. In any event, the Blue Bridge is very photogenic, as it sets a bright human touch upon the nature-themed colors of Tai Tau Chau. The Blue Bridge connects the Shek O Headland area to Tai Tau Chau. In 2018, super typhoon Mangkut destroyed the bridge. It was only finally and functionally restored in 2021. I am very glad that I get to visit Tai Tau Chau and walk through this bridge on this visit. As I walked around the islet, I noticed beautiful rock formations everywhere. The rocks that make up Tai Tau Chau are granites. Granites are a kind of volcanic rock. We totally loved the place, vibes and staff. Even if first day we did not want to wait in the line, seemed quite packed so we took the coffee to go (which was perfect taste), second day we waited as we were hungry and it was a lot better than expected. The space is bright, white, and minimalistic in that modern café sort of way. The outdoor space is more of some seating in a laneway, rather than a proper patio, but it is always busy! In my experience, this is one of the most popular (if not the most popular) brunch spots in Lagos. The staff is mostly friendly and attentive, and the baristas look like they are legit enjoying their jobs, which is amazing to see.
