DawnMedia has partnered with the World Wildlife Fund-Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) on its climate change initiative ‘Breathe Pakistan’ for a “strategic collaboration aimed at tackling environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices across Pakistan”. Breathe Pakistan was launched earlier this month to mobilise citizens to incorporate environmental sustainability into their daily lives. “At DawnMedia, we believe in the power of unity — coming together for one collective purpose, even if in modest ways,” Dawn CEO Nazafreen Saigol-Lakhani had said. DawnMedia is launching an initiative to combat climate change, ‘Breathe Pakistan’, that aims to mobilise citizens to incorporate environmental sustainability in their daily lives. “As Pakistan faces an escalating challenge from unbridled climate change, and the country witnesses scorching heat waves, widespread glacier melt and extensive urban and rural flooding, DawnMedia has announced the launch of its latest initiative ‘Breathe Pakistan’,” according to a statement issued by the company. The Breathe Pakistan campaign attempts to create a wider awareness through a cross-platform media approach. In the course of the campaign, DawnMedia will establish closer contacts with environmental activists and think tanks in an attempt to build a coherent strategy for the near future with a conference in early 2025 to address the adverse effects of climate change in Pakistan. #DawnToday #BreathePakistan #DawnMedia

EDITORIAL: The return of Aun Ali Khosa, a satirist and social media activist, has brought much relief to his family and supporters. But it has also raised some unsettling questions about the state of free expression in the country. Khosa, who was allegedly abducted by ‘unknown’ masked men — widely believed to be security personnel — had disappeared shortly after releasing a satirical song criticising the government’s economic policies. His return came just a day before the Lahore High Court was set to hear a petition regarding his abduction. The circumstances of Khosa’s disappearance reflect the antics of a state steeped in paranoia. Khosa’s satire may not be to everyone’s taste, particularly those in power, but his work is a legitimate form of expression in a democratic society. Satire has long been a tool for critiquing the powerful and highlighting societal issues, and it plays a crucial role in fostering public debate. "The Kolkata incident is brutal and horrifying and it brings to the fore a safety problem that has also been faced by working women in Pakistan. Doctors, including women doctors, work long hours in very difficult circumstances — whether they are at the understaffed wards at government hospitals in the cities or in far-flung areas where amenities are few and living conditions difficult. Doctors, including those with labour-room responsibilities, have to work at all hours of the day and night and may be singlehandedly responsible for dozens of patients at the same time. The situation is made more complicated by the fact that patients are often accompanied by entire crews of family members. If something goes awry or the patient passes away, one doctor is left to face a crowd of angry family members. While such a situation can be faced by both male and female doctors, the latter category is more vulnerable in a patriarchal society, where misogyny and gender discrimination are par for the course." Editorial: The state minister for IT continues to waffle. On Sunday, Shaza Fatima Khawaja was back on TV screens, categorically denying her government’s responsibility for the anaemic internet speeds being experienced by millions of users across the country. The frequent, unannounced degradations in internet connectivity, widely suspected to be a consequence of the opaque firewall technology being secretively implemented by the state, was, in fact, due to more people using VPNs to access the internet, the minister claimed. “I can say under oath that the government neither shut down nor slowed down the internet,” Ms Khawaja insisted. Claiming that the issue has now been resolved, the minister then said a meeting had been set up with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority this week to “ensure that users in the country do not face similar problems again”. But if the issue was simply more people using VPNs, why was there a need to get the PTA involved? Read full editorial: https://lnkd.in/dw5A3VVP #DawnToday

"A 31-year-old doctor was raped and murdered in a most gruesome way when she was on her night duty at a Kolkata hospital on Aug 9. She spoke to her parents shortly before midnight, and a key question being asked is why she was not missed or called for duty between 3am and 10am when her bloodied body was found on the floor of the hospital’s seminar room. Doctors around the country have staged protests at the crime. The media have given saturated coverage to the incident." Read full opinion by Jawed Naqvi: https://lnkd.in/deCTZJcA
