Port Congestion Heightens Container Market Troubles 🚢 The global port congestion indicator has reached the 2 million TEU mark, representing 6.8% of the global fleet, with Singapore emerging as a significant congestion hotspot. Berthing delays at Singapore, the world's second-largest container port, have extended up to seven days, with the total capacity waiting to dock rising to 450,000 TEU in recent days. Worsening port congestion has intensified challenges in the already overstretched container market, with more than 2% of container vessel supply removed since March, according to a recent report from Bank of America. These delays have led to vessel bunching, causing spillover congestion and scheduling difficulties at downstream ports, a situation expected to deteriorate further in the coming month. Freight rates have been significantly impacted, with the Shanghai Container Freight Index (SCFI) rising by 42% in the last month.
