10 Lessons We Learned as Indie Game Developers, after 6 months of game developing. we’ve gained some valuable insights. Whether you’re just starting out or want to level up your skills, these lessons are a must-know in 2025 1. Create a Game Design Document (GDD): It is your game’s blueprint! It keeps your vision clear and organized, ensuring you stay on track and communicate effectively with your team. 2. Keep the Scope Small: Start with a manageable project. Smaller games teach you faster, keep you motivated, and help you finish your first game. 3. Your First Idea is Never Perfect: Prototyping and iterating are key. Be open to change, test your mechanics, and refine your gameplay until it works. 4. Don’t Build in Private: Share your progress early and often. Building a community while developing helps you get feedback and build excitement. 5. Marketing = Development Effort: Creating the game is only half the battle. Share updates, build a presence, and connect with your audience throughout the journey. 6. Make a Trailer Early: A polished trailer is your game’s first impression. Keep it short, showcase your core mechanics, and grab attention in the first 5 seconds. 7. Create a Playable Demo: Let players experience your game! A demo builds excitement, gathers feedback, and hooks potential fans. 8. Optimize Your Steam Store Page Early: Set up your Steam page ASAP. Research tags, optimize descriptions, and start building visibility from the start. 9. Participate in Fests: Game festivals and showcases are invaluable for visibility, feedback, and momentum. Take advantage of these opportunities! 10. Just Make Games: Focus on learning and improving with every project. Success takes time, but consistency and passion will get you there. Check out the full breakdown in our video: https://lnkd.in/datrj4pX We hope these lessons inspire you to bring your game ideas to life in 2025! 💡 What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned as a game developer? Lighting is an incredibly powerful tool in game development that can make or break the atmosphere of a game. It can guide players, evoke emotions, and create unforgettable settings. When used properly, lighting can take a game from good to extraordinary. Tips for Effective Lighting in Game Development 🌅 Set the Mood: Use warm, soft lighting for comforting scenes and cool, harsh lighting for tense moments. The color and intensity of lighting can greatly affect how players perceive a scene. 🔦 Direct Player Attention: Use light to subtly guide players toward important objectives. Highlighting specific areas can make navigation intuitive without the need for explicit markers. 🌌 Enhance Visual Storytelling: Lighting can emphasize elements of your story. A flickering light in a dark hallway can evoke suspense, while sunlight streaming through a window can signify hope or calm. Games like Inside and The Last of Us masterfully use lighting to create atmosphere, evoke emotions, and guide players without words. For those looking to learn more, check "Lighting for Animation: The Art of Visual Storytelling" by "Jasmine Katatikarn and Michael Tanzillo". Though focused on animation, the concepts apply directly to video games and can help you create truly immersive environments. #GameDev #Lighting #VisualStorytelling #Atmosphere #GameDesign #IndieGames

Procedural generation is a powerful tool in game development that can save time, create endless replayability, and surprise players with unique content. By leveraging algorithms to generate content on the fly, developers can focus more on creativity and less on hand-crafting every detail. Benefits of Procedural Generation 🌌 Infinite Replayability: Procedural generation makes each playthrough unique, keeping players engaged. Games like No Man's Sky use it to create vast, ever-changing universes. ⏳ Development Efficiency: Instead of designing every element manually, procedural tools can generate levels, terrain, and even stories, freeing up developers to focus on other aspects of the game. 🎲 Emergent Gameplay: Procedural systems can lead to unexpected and exciting gameplay experiences, as players encounter unique combinations of challenges and opportunities. If you're curious to learn more, "Procedural Generation in Game Design" by "Tanya Short and Tarn Adams" is an excellent resource. It provides a comprehensive look at the techniques and challenges involved in using procedural generation effectively. #GameDev #ProceduralGeneration #GameDesign #IndieGames #Replayability #GameDevelopmentTools

Visual storytelling is a powerful tool in game design, allowing players to absorb a narrative without reading a single line of text. The environment, character designs, and visual cues work together to convey emotion, backstory, and atmosphere, making the game world feel rich and alive. Key Aspects of Visual Storytelling 🏞️ Environmental Design: Use the environment to tell the story. A building with overgrown vines might suggest a forgotten past, while a bustling town square conveys life and activity. 👤 Character Appearance: Characters' appearances can provide clues about their backgrounds and motivations. A scarred warrior or a tired traveler tells a story before any dialogue is spoken. 🔦 Lighting and Color: Lighting can emphasize emotions and direct player focus. Warm colors can evoke comfort, while dark, cool tones can build tension and suspense. "Journey" by thatgamecompany is a fantastic example of visual storytelling. Without any dialogue, it conveys a powerful narrative purely through art, environment, and music. For those who want to delve deeper, I recommend "Blood, Sweat, and Pixels" by "Jason Schreier", which offers behind-the-scenes insights into how game developers use visual storytelling to create compelling experiences. #GameDev #VisualStorytelling #NarrativeDesign #GameArt #IndieGameDev #GameDesign
