About us
IDEAS was established in June 2012 with a vision to strengthen the economic and social foundation of democracy in Pakistan by producing rigorous quality research. The rationale behind IDEAS is to create and strengthen local capacity to undertake rigorous research and advocacy on economic and social issues critical to Pakistan’s economic sustainability and democratic future, which essentially depend on reducing socio-economic inequalities and countering political and social polarization through representative and responsive institutions. The objective is to identify, through research, pivotal opportunities of policy reform, both in terms of feasibility and impact, and subsequently, use that knowledge for advocacy and policy engagement. IDEAS envisions research to be innovative, multidisciplinary and rigorous and believes in policy engagement that is strategic, consistent and long-term.

Patras Bokhari was Pakistan's first Permanent Representative at the United Nations from 1951-1954. He then retired from Pakistan's employment to join the UN as head of its Information Department in NY as Under-Secretary to the Secretary General from 1954 till his death in 1958. A man of letters, Patras drafted Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan's speeches and public announcements for his visit to the US in 1950, compiled as "Pakistan: The Heart of Asia" (Harvard University Press). His speeches at the UN are also a literary treasure: https://lnkd.in/eA3EtkmF Explore the archive of images of his life and his time at the UN. https://lnkd.in/eBe_Cdjk IDEAS collaborates with digital archives and public history forums in Pakistan through its digital public history program to curate and facilitate access to local knowledge. In memory of Patras Bokhari on his 66th death anniversary (December 5, 1958), IDEAS is pleased to commemorate his many creative and diplomatic accomplishments by sharing an archive of his life and works, curated by his grandson, Syed Ayaz Bokhari. https://lnkd.in/eGemjBSM 'Patras' (Peter in Greek) was Pir Ahmed Shah Bokhari's sobriquet, reflecting his deep knowledge of Greek philosophy. It was adopted by him when his headmaster at Islamia College Peshawar, Mr. Watkins, endearingly pronounced Pir as Pierre (French for Peter). The Patras Bokhari open access digital archive was officially launched at Patras' alma mater, Government College Lahore, in December 2005. We invite you to discover the many facets of this great personality through his works, including essays, speeches, letters and other writings. IDEAS collaborates with digital archives and public history forums in Pakistan through its digital public history program to curate and facilitate access to local knowledge. We hope that this initiative will help in expanding public outreach to history outside our classrooms.

📅 Happening Next Week: Webinar | The Patriarchal Political Order with Dr. Soledad Artiz Prillaman (Stanford University) and Ms. Sharmeen Azeem (Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives (IDEAS) moderated by Rida Fatima (LUMS). Women across the Global South, and particularly in India, turn out to vote on election days but are noticeably absent from politics year-round. Why? The webinar, titled after Dr Prillaman’s book, presents insights from her work in India, exposing how coercive power structures diminish political participation for women and the role collective action plays in enhancing women’s political agency. The book has received the Victoria Schuck Award for the best book on women and politics and is also the runner-up for the Luebbert Book Award for the best book in comparative politics. The webinar will also highlight findings from Dr. Prillaman’s work in Pakistan from the MetaKeta V project. Join us for the Webinar on the MHRC Facebook Page.
