Exciting updates from our Partner & Head of Design, Ali Murtaza! Over the past weeks, Ali had been working alongside the SECP to help shape the Pakistan Startup Summit 2024. From setting the agenda to gathering insights for the post-summit report, it’s been a collaborative effort to support growth and innovation in Pakistan’s startup ecosystem ✨
Over the last few weeks, I've had the privilege of working with the SECP to help shape and support the Pakistan Startup Summit 2024, which took place earlier this week in Karachi. The summit brought together industry leaders, policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs to explore ways of fostering innovation, discuss regulatory developments, and address challenges and opportunities across Pakistan's startup ecosystem. As a consultant for the SECP, I got the opportunity to help set the summit's agenda, lay out key objectives, and develop guides for each panel discussion across the two days. Among the speakers and panelists were the Finance Minister of Pakistan, senior decision makers from the SECP, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and NADRA; as well as accomplished leaders like Ms. Sima Kamil, Nadeem Hussain, Nadeem Shaikh, Misbah Naqvi, Khurram Zafar, Halima Iqbal, Taimoor Ali, Naureen Hyat, Mubariz Siddiqui, Dr.Sara Saeed, and more. With the summit now concluded, we are gathering feedback from attendees, panelists, and moderators to better understand what worked well, and what could be done better next time. If you attended the summit, and would like to share your thoughts, please reach out in the comments or via DM. We will send you a link to a short feedback form in the coming days. This feedback, learnings from the summit, and other ongoing conversations with panelists and speakers will shape the comprehensive post-Summit report we are writing with the SECP. This report will highlight key themes, challenges, policy recommendations, and opportunities for collaboration within Pakistan’s startup landscape.

🌍 Building Scalable Cashless Ecosystems 🌍 With digital financial services (DFS) on the rise in Pakistan, we’re thrilled to have partnered with Karandaaz Pakistan to transform local communities into cashless ecosystems. Through user-centered research, we identified housing societies as suitable ecosystems for digitizing everyday payments—utility bills, groceries, school fees—and crafted strategies for DFS integration and behavior change among residents and merchants alike. This research laid the foundation for a pilot program, now being rolled out with Askari Bank and Digital Miles, and is paving the way for greater financial inclusion, reduced cash dependency, and a scalable model for cashless ecosystems across the nation. 🔗 Learn more about our research on cashless ecosystems: https://lnkd.in/d2iRyH57 #DigitalInclusion #CommunityCentric #CashlessEconomy #FinancialInnovation #FintechTransformation
Cashless Ecosystem (Karandaaz | Askari Bank | Digital Miles) Karandaaz Pakistan envisioned the idea of digitizing all payment nodes of a defined geographic area and eventually through research with support from Ideate Innovation narrowed down on digitizing payments in housing societies of Pakistan. Hypothesis: Variability in payment transactions and heterogeneity of consumer segments makes housing societies a key target area for Financial Institutions to create a closed cashless ecosystem while maintaining commercial viability through high engagement of users. As an experiment to initiate the work on this ambition under its private sector engagements, Karandaaz along with Askari Bank and Digital Miles has embarked on a journey to shortlist and then digitize payments in a housing society. What does it mean! Askari bank in collaboration with Digital Miles will digitize payments for residents' touchpoints like Merchants, Clubs, Schools, Utility and Society Bills, Events, Gyms and Hospitals. On top, a lifestyle app is envisioned to digitize P2P use-cases that exist as a part of economy like split bill, tailor payments, settlements between residents, domestic support staff, donations and many other things. The idea is to target opening accounts of at least 80% of the adults in the housing society and see the impact of cashless ecosystem in their lives through post implementation research. The insights on the reduction in the shoe leather cost of residents, the viability of high adoption of accounts by the residents for operators and affect of convenience on the lives will be show cased in the wider dissemination. Happy to ideate similar projects around cashless ecosystem with other Financial Institutions – Please feel free to reach out to me.
