French startup Mistral AI just released an open-weight AI model that beats top models like GPT-4o and Gemini 1.5 Pro on many real-world tasks. Their new 124B parameter Pixtral-Large multimodal model: - Outperforms top models on math reasoning and real-world tasks - Beats Gemini 1.5 Pro and GPT-4o on chart and document understanding - Features a 128k context window, handling a min. of 30 high-res images Mistral’s Le Chat platform also got revamped, complete with web search, document analysis, and image generation (powered by Black Forest Labs’ Flux Pro). They also launched Canvas, a feature similar to ChatGPT's Canvas that allows you to modify, edit, or transform content directly. Six months ago, the gap between open and closed models was significant. Now, state-of-the-art AI (with all the latest features) is quickly becoming available to anyone who wants to use it. Perplexity just announced they're taking on Amazon with a new AI-powered Shopping experience. It allows you to search for your plans (rather than just what you want to buy), and it will figure out what you need. You can also take a picture of any item, find it online, and buy it all on Perplexity (and with Pro you get Free Shipping). This essentially converts the entire world into a showroom and makes it shoppable. This is a direct threat to Amazon. Some quick stats: > 54% of product searches in the US start on Amazon > 50% of all products sold on Amazon is sold by third-party sellers > In effect Amazon leases out space on its website to external sellers, and provides various services including shipping, storage and money back guarantees. > Perplexity is starting to create an Amazon like experience out of the open web And also finally we see a path to revenue for Perplexity. It could look something like this: > That pair of Bose headphones you took a photo of is expensive > Have you considered this pair of very well reviewed [No Brand] headphones? > Ad revenue that doesn’t make search bad If Perplexity can nail the experience, they can then take on Temu, Shein and any other e-commerce app. Goodbye to endless scrolling, while being confused and doing research to figure out what to buy.
