Pakistan Climate Change Authority Kicks Off: Paving the Way for Climate Resilience Islamabad, 4 October 2024 – In a landmark step to combat climate change and enhance resilience, Pakistan has established the Pakistan Climate Change Authority (PCCA). This new institution aims to spearhead comprehensive adaptation and mitigation strategies, implementing national and provincial policies to address the growing challenges posed by climate change. As envisioned in the Pakistan Climate Change Act, 2017, the PCCA will lead efforts to formulate and coordinate robust plans, projects, and programmes to meet Pakistan’s obligations under international conventions, including the United Nations Climate Change Convention. This institution is pivotal in supporting the nation's transition towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. The inaugural meeting of the Pakistan Climate Change Authority (PCCA) took place today, chaired by Mr. Ghulam Qadir Shah, Chairperson of the PCCA. Ms. Aisha Humera Ch., Secretary Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, delivered the welcome remarks. During the meeting, the Chairperson and members discussed the initial framework for roles and responsibilities under the Pakistan Climate Change Act 2017. The Authority is composed of one Chairperson and eight members, four of whom represent the provinces. It was also viewed that a roadmap for setting priority climate actions may be developed to take forward the climate agenda in the country in coordination with the provinces and other relevant stakeholders. The next meeting of the Pakistan Climate Change Authority will be held in person within the next fortnight. The chairperson thanked the Members of the Authority and participation of Secretary, Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination for her participation on special invitation.
